The Giants' offense is thriving with patience, power | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1826

On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick discusses the San Francisco Giants' 6-3 win over the Cincinnati Reds on Tuesday night. Anthony DeSclafani gave up a leadoff home run to Jesse Winker, but that would be the only run the Reds scored against him in seven otherwise superb innings. At the plate, the Giants struck out 17 times, but they grinded against Reds starter Luis Castillo, and Alex Dickerson connected for a clutch three-run home run against him. Brandon Crawford homered in the late innings as well. The Giants' offense as a whole has been thriving the last couple of years with patience and power, and that is nothing but a good thing. As Ben stresses, don't worry so much about the strikeouts. Last night's high total was an outlier, anyway. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!  Webb, power bats sling Giants past Reds | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1740

On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick breaks down the San Francisco Giants' 6-3 win over the Cincinnati Reds on Monday night. Logan Webb delivered an excellent start, one of his very best of the season. He held down a potent offense by mixing his pitches and attacking the strike zone, which is a big key for him. Webb came out earlier than expected, and manager Gabe Kapler later revealed that it was because Webb had right shoulder soreness. On offense, the Giants continue to hit for power. Wilmer Flores, Mike Yastrzemski, and Mauricio Dubón each homered in this game. The Giants are among the league leaders in home runs and isolated power, which bodes very well for their offense this season. Despite jumping out to a big 5-0 lead, the Giants' bullpen once again made things too interesting. Jarlin Garcia, Matt Wisler, and Caleb Baragar had shaky outings, but thankfully Tyler Rogers provided some calm in the 9th inning. He allowed a leadoff single, and Brandon Crawford made a throwing error with two outs in the 9th, but Rogers pitched through it all to deliver another save. Finally, Ben breaks down the Giants claiming outfielder Braden Bishop off waivers from the Seattle Mariners. Bishop is the older brother of Giants top prospect Hunter Bishop, who was selected 10th overall by the Giants in 2019.  The Giants have become a team we should expect to win | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1656

On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick talks about the San Francisco Giants' business like win over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Thursday night. Anthony DeSclafani recovered from a shaky first inning to retire the final 13 batters he faced, and the offense did just enough to get the job done. Steven Duggar hit a solo home run, and Mike Tauchman, Buster Posey, and Mike Yastrzemski did the rest of the damage. DeSclafnai was pinch hit for a little sooner than people expected considering how well he was throwing, but manager Gabe Kapler later revealed that DeSclafani wasn't feeling great and that was why he was removed. The bullpen was mostly good, with Caleb Baragar, Zack Littell, and Tyler Rogers pitching clean innings, but Camilo Doval allowed another home run. The Giants have four relievers in the bottom 25 in the NL in win probability added this season, out of a sample of 200+. Thankfully, WPA is not a predictive statistic, but it does tell a story about a bullpen that has been pretty shaky all season long. The Giants' starting pitchers rank as the best in the game, by far, in WPA. Ben also discusses the Giants' upcoming schedule, and what he expects for the remainder of this series, road trip, and month. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!  Inbox: Giants prospects to be promoted soon? | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1538

On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick answers questions from listeners about the state of the San Francisco Giants. Among the questions asked and answered are: Farhan Zaidi said prospects will be coming up in the next few weeks if they keep playing well. Who are those guys, and who gets removed from the 26-man roster to make room for them? When will Heliot Ramos be playing every day at Oracle Park? Can the Giants make the postseason with a team batting average that is 22nd in the league? My concern is that four of our five starting pitchers are free agents after this year. Do we have any in the minors that look ready for the majors next year? I finally got on Statcast and noticed some cool stuff that I’d like to hear your take on. The Giants pitchers have caused opposing batters to hit an average launch angle that is lowest in the majors. Is that their secret sauce? Pitch for ground balls? Your thoughts?  Giants sweep Rangers, look legitimately good | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1599

On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick talks about the San Francisco Giants sweeping the Texas Rangers in a two-game series, and improving upon their MLB-best numbers. They have the best home record in the majors, they're tied for the best record in MLB, and they have the second-best run differential in the NL. Logan Webb struck out a career-best 10 in Tuesday's win, Mike Tauchman was on base three times, and Mike Yastrzemski had a big run-scoring double in the first inning. Ben analyzes how the Giants are heating up at the plate, and how, combined with their excellent starting pitching thus far, the Giants look like a legitimately good team. Ben also discusses the Giants' minor league affiliates beginning their seasons recently. He talks about where top Giants prospects were initially placed, and how they're performing thus far. Top Giants prospects Heliot Ramos, Joey Bart, Marco Luciano, Luis Matos, Seth Corry, Hunter Bishop, and Patrick Bailey are among those discussed.  The Giants do this more than any team—and it's working | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1567

On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick talks about the San Francisco Giants' 3-1 win over the Texas Rangers on Monday night. Alex Wood was brilliant again, Brandon Belt homered, and manager Gabe Kapler pulled the right strings in the late innings with pinch-hit decisions. Austin Slater, Darin Ruf, and Mauricio Dubón were used consecutively as pinch hitters with two outs and nobody on base in the seventh inning, and all three reached base safely. Dubón's single drove in Slater as the go-ahead run. Ben takes a look at some pinch hitting numbers for the Giants since Kapler took over prior to the 2020 season. Since that time, the Giants are first by a mile in plate appearances by pinch hitters, and they're first in wRC+ by their pinch hitters. That's a winning combination, and it's an intentional strategy. Kapler, his coaches, and the Giants' front office led by Farhan Zaidi, deserves a lot of credit for how they've built and managed this team. The Giants improved to 21-14 with the win, and they remain in first place in the NL West. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!Built Bar Built Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar.  Powered by Posey, the Giants' offense is back | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1688

On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick discusses three things we learned this weekend with the San Francisco Giants. The first thing we learned is that the Giants' offense is back. Despite a sluggish start, the Giants are now near the top of the MLB leaderboards in several key categories, including wRC+, isolated power, fWAR, BB/K, and Chase%. Buster Posey, who's leading the major leagues in wRC+, has been a huge reason why the offense has posted overall strong numbers. The second thing we learned is that the Giants' predicted struggles against the Padres were overstated. They've played nine games against a team that was supposed to dominate them, and the Giants are 5-4 in those games. The Giants are also in first place, ahead of the Padres and Dodgers. The third thing we learned is that the Giants made a lot of roster moves. Mike Yastrzemski, Johnny Cueto, Kevin Gausman, and Jarlin Garcia were activated off the injured list. Alex Dickerson and Aaron Sanchez went on the IL. Jason Vosler was optioned to Sacramento. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!Built Bar Built Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar.  First place on the line with Locked On Padres | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1950

On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick is joined by Locked On Padres host Javier Reyes, and the two discuss the upcoming series between the San Francisco Giants and San Diego Padres. The Giants' offense has been off to a somewhat sluggish start, and it doesn't help that star outfielder Mike Yastrzemski started slow and then laded on the injured list, although he will likely be activated at some point during this series. The Padres' offense hasn't hit its stride yet either, but the pitching, led by Yu Darvish, Joe Musgrove, Mark Melancon, Drew Pomeranz, and several others, has been as advertised. First place is on the line in this series, so it promises to be a good one. Anthony DeSclafani, Kevin Gausman, and Johnny Cueto will start for the Giants, while Blake Snell, Musgrove, and Dinelson Lamet are scheduled to start for San Diego.  Inbox: What can the Giants do to improve this bullpen quickly? | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1484

On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick answers questions from listeners about the state of the San Francisco Giants. Among the questions asked and answered are: What can the Giants do to improve this bullpen quickly? Is it too early to make a move for an established bullpen arm? Zack Littel is looking pretty good so far. Who could be the next non-roster guy to get a shot? And what would be the likely roster move to accommodate? Time to panic about Matt Wisler? Time to send Camilo Doval back to the minors? Was the Mike Tauchman trade as worth it as it seems so far? Is Steven Duggar doing a good enough job to potentially keep himself on the team? What’s your take on managers getting tossed when a call doesn’t go their way? I’ve seen a lot of decries of Gabe Kapler, claiming that he doesn’t support his guys because he hasn’t ever gotten fired up and ejected. Does Logan Webb lose his spot in the rotation with Cueto coming back? Barring any starting pitcher injuries, where will Webb fit into the pen when Johnny Cueto returns? Is there a way he could eventually become a late inning guy if no Farhan Zaidi move is made to bolster the back end? Would a move to the bullpen really help Webb? His stats with a runner on vs. bases empty are wildly different, so I can't imagine a bullpen assignment helps him too much (.646 OPS with bases empty; .876 OPS with men on base).  Talking it all out after Giants lose heartbreaker, drop series to Rox | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1644

On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick talks about all three games the San Francisco Giants played against the Rockies in Denver over the last couple days. Things started out well, with the Giants scoring 10 first-inning runs in the first game, but things completely unraveled in the second game. The Giants had a four-run lead with two outs in the final inning, but the Rockies scored six times, winning on a Charlie Blackmon walk-off home run with two outs and two strikes. Camilo Doval served up the home run, but Jake McGee put the Giants in a precarious position with another poor performance. In the finale, Logan Webb had one bad inning, and the offense couldn't overcome it. Brandon Crawford had a great series, homering on both days, but it wasn't enough in the finale. Brandon Belt also had a great series, as did Buster Posey, but Posey exited on Wednesday with an injury. The Giants are banged up, and this was a really tough road trip.  Giants mailbag: Has Posey shown enough to warrant an extension past 2021? | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1634

On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick answers questions from listeners about the state of the San Francisco Giants. Among the questions asked and answered are: Has Buster Posey shown enough to this point to start talks about extending him past this year? Renegotiate around the $22 million club option and lock him in for another couple years to help with the transition into the future at the catcher position? I’d love to see Posey and Bart working together. What does Matt Wisler have to do to pitch himself off the roster? Will Jake McGee get back to how good he was early on in the season?  Giants salvage series in SD, but lose La Stella | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1666

On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick talks about three things we learned this weekend with the San Francisco Giants. The first thing we learned is that the Giants did what they needed to do in San Diego: win at least one game. While they obviously would have liked to do more, winning a series on the road against a team of the Padres' caliber should be more of a goal rather than the expectation. Behind Kevin Gausman and Mike Tauchman, the Giants won the finale, 7-1, which actually meant they outscored San Diego in the series. The Giants are now 3-3 against the Padres this season, with all six games coming on the road. That shouldn't be viewed as anything other than a win for the Giants. The second thing we learned is that Tommy La Stella is hurt. La Stella pulled his left hamstring on Sunday, and it's a big loss for the Giants, who are already without Donovan Solano at second base, and other key players like Mike Yastrzemski. La Stella will likely head to the IL, further testing the Giants' depth. Ben thinks Jason Vosler will likely be called up and will start at second base against right-handed pitchers. The third thing we learned was that the Giants made some roster moves. Zack Littell was added to the 40-man and active rosters, and Steven Duggar was called up. In corresponding moves, Vosler was optioned and Skye Bolt was DFA'd. We also learned that Buster Posey continues to be a force at the plate, with a refined pre-pitch setup. Now he gets to hit in Colorado, as the Giants will look to win a road series against an inferior Rockies team.  Inbox: What are the Giants' playoff chances at this point? | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1802

On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick answers questions from listeners about the state of the San Francisco Giants. Among the questions asked and answered are: How sustainable do you think our chances of the playoffs are at this point? Of course being the best team in the NL about a month in enhances the chances, but it is only one month at the end of the day. You still see about an 86-76 finish? How will the acquisition of Mike Tauchman change the outfield mix? Could someone get DFA’d once Mike Yastrzemski comes back? It seems like if there’s one thing this team needs it’s a right-handed reliever. Do you think the Giants brass may be regretting the Sam Coonrod trade?
