Giants' magical season ends in heartbreak—and controversy | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1598

On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick tries to make sense of the San Francisco Giants' magical season ending abruptly on Thursday night at the hands of their bitter rivals. Wilmer Flores was ruled to have swung at a two-strike Max Scherzer offering, even though he didn't, and just like that, the game and the season was over. Ultimately, the Giants didn't score enough runs to win. They scored just 10 runs in the five-game series, an average of just two runs per game. The Dodgers' pitching and defense shut the Giants down for most of the series, and in the end it was too much to overcome. Logan Webb stepped up again and was brilliant, but the Giants could not give him the support he needed. Now our attention turns to a long offseason, one in which the Giants will be primed to spend big and have a ton of holes to fill. It was a magical and incredible 2021 season for the Giants. They were supposed to win 75 games, per projection systems, but instead they won 107, they won the NL West, and they took the all-time talented Dodgers to the final pitch of NLDS Game 5. There's nothing to be ashamed of with this group. They exceeded everyone's expectations, and from top to bottom they deserve immense credit. They took a quantum leap forward in 2021, and the bar has been raised for 2022 and beyond.  Inbox: Are the Giants winning Game 5? | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1929

It all comes down to this. On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick answers listeners' questions about the San Francisco Giants' NLDS Game 5 tonight against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Among the questions asked and answered are: Are we winning Game 5? Give us some stats that’ll make us feel good about Thursday’s game. Do you think the Giants will be aggressive early against Julio Urías? Have the Giants had any success against Urías this year? Do you think home plate umpire Doug Eddings will play a role? With everyone available in the bullpen, how aggressive do you expect Gabe Kapler to be? Webb followed by Kevin Gausman (if necessary) followed by Camilo Doval I would imagine if things go as planned, right? Has Tyler Rogers been overused in this series and should he be considered unavailable for Game 5? Besides Doval and Gausman, who can be trusted to relieve Webb if/when necessary?  Giants falter in Game 4 as bats stay ice cold | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1809

On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick discusses the San Francisco Giants' 7-2 loss in Game 4 of the NLDS, with the Dodgers forcing a decisive Game 5 in San Francisco on Thursday night. Anthony DeSclafani started for the Giants, and he was shaky from the first pitch. Manager Gabe Kapler did his best to keep the Giants in the game, deploying his bullpen extremely aggressively, but they were uncharacteristically wild and the offense just could muster enough to compete. Overall, the offensive numbers for the Giants in this series are not pretty. They're not getting on base nearly enough, and half of their position players on the roster are hitless, amounting to an 0 for 39 funk for the seven Giants combined. Regardless, the series is tied at two games apiece, and the Giants have a great shot to advance on Thursday. Logan Webb will take the mound, with Kevin Gausman, Camilo Doval, and other high leverage Giants relievers ready to go. The right-handed lineup looks good on paper, and they'll have a chance to break out against Julio Urías, who was very good in a Game 2 Dodgers win.  Giants blank Dodgers, take 2-1 NLDS lead | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1944

On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick details the San Francisco Giants' thrilling 1-0 win against the Los Angeles Dodgers in LA. In a game that heavily favored the Dodgers because of the pitching match-up, Alex Wood out-dueled Max Scherzer. Scherzer allowed a solo home run to Evan Longoria, and that was the only scoring in the game. Wood pitched into the fifth inning, and manager Gabe Kapler aggressively deployed Tyler Rogers to finish out the frame. He did, and he also pitched the sixth and into the seventh. Jake McGee relieved him, and got two critical outs. Brandon Crawford saved the day with a leaping catch on a Mookie Betts line drive. Then, rookie Camilo Doval got the final six outs in order to close out the 1-0 shutout. Gavin Lux thought he tied the game with two outs in the ninth, but strong wind at Dodger Stadium may have kept the ball in the yard. Regardless, both teams dealt with the wind all night. Longoria hit his home run through it, and Mike Yastrzemski was similarly robbed in the sixth. The win sets the Giants up to potentially clinch the series on Tuesday night. Anthony DeSclafani will start for San Francisco, with the Dodgers yet to announce a starter. It may very well be Walker Buehler on short rest, which could set up a potential Logan Webb vs. Julio Urias matchup in a decisive Game 5, if it comes to that.  Logan Webb, Giants dominate in Game 1—then Dodgers return the favor | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1827

On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick discusses the San Francisco Giants' two NLDS games against the Dodgers over the weekend. Logan Webb was absolutely dominant in Game 1, and the Giants hammered three home runs en route to a 4-0 win. However, pretty much nothing went right in Game 2. Kevin Gausman was shaky early on, and the bullpen allowed the Dodgers to blow the game open late. There were a series of decisions that manager Gabe Kapler had to make, none of which worked out favorably. Most importantly, in Ben's eyes, was the decision not to pinch hit for Gausman in the bottom of the 5th. The Giants were trailing 2-1, and there was one out with nobody on base. Allowing Gausman to hit for himself was essentially punting on the inning, which wasn't ideal given that the Giants were trailing. Gausman predictably made an out and the inning amounted to nothing, and then he allowed two of the first three batters to reach in the top of the 6th, which wasn't too surprising given it was the middle of the batting order facing Gausman for a third time. Dominic Leone came on and allowed several runs to score, and later Zack Littell had a poor outing and the game got out of hand. At the end of the day, it's a brand new series as we shift our attention to Game 3 in Los Angeles. It'll be Max Scherzer on the mound for the Dodgers, and Alex Wood for the Giants. Scherzer is as good as it gets, but Wood is no slouch himself. In best-of-five series, the "momentum" of the series shifts with each and every game, so the Giants will look to swing it back in their favor tonight. If they falter, they still have a chance in Game 4, and Game 5 would be back in San Francisco with Webb on the mound.  Who has the edge as Giants, Dodgers clash in NLDS? | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 2024

On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick discusses the San Francisco Giants' upcoming NLDS matchup with the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Giants announced their playoff roster this morning, and there were a few surprises. Most notably, Johnny Cueto was left off. It's a move that makes sense, but is bound to make Cueto unhappy. Leaving Cueto off the roster gives the Giants another position player to work with, however. Steven Duggar and Alex Dickerson both made it, which will allow Gabe Kapler maximum maneuverability with platoons and pinch-hitting. That's clearly a bigger need and advantage than having an extra long reliever, a role Cueto would have filled. After discussing the Giants' official roster, Ben goes position by position, breaking down whether the Giants or Dodgers have the edge. Finally, he gives his prediction for how this series is going to end up. Watch Daily on YouTube http://bit.ly/LOGYouTube Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!  Giants to face rival Dodgers in NLDS | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1831

On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick discusses the San Francisco Giants' upcoming heavyweight matchup with the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League Division Series. These two storied franchises have never met in the postseason—until now. The Dodgers won 106 games in the regular season, one fewer than the 107-win Giants. As a result, LA was subjected to the single-elimination Wild Card Game on Wednesday, which they won on a walk-off home run by Chris Taylor. Ben discusses the unfair national media coverage of the Giants, with many expects still unconvinced that the Giants can hang tough with LA. New Locked On insider Gordon Beckham makes an appearance on today's show to discuss the Giants vs. Dodgers NLDS. He makes a prediction that Giants fans are bound to like. Ben discusses why Beckham's takes are fair, and that the Giants deserve huge amounts of credit for holding off LA. Finally, Ben discusses how the Giants and Dodgers stack up statistically. They were unbelievably close from an offensive standpoint, with the Dodgers having a slight edge in on-base percentage and the Giants having a slight edge in power. The Dodgers' starters have an advantage of the Giants, but it's close. The bullpen edge goes to the Giants for being more complete, but LA is a close second. These two teams were neck-and-neck in most categories all season long, so it's only fitting that they're now meeting in the playoffs. On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick attempts to predict the San Francisco Giants' 26-man Division Series roster. The NLDS opens up on Friday, and the Giants will either be facing the Dodgers or Cardinals.  Stats behind the Giants' 107-win season | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1954

On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick discusses the stats behind the San Francisco Giants' 107-win season in 2021. They excelled in just about every way, as you would expect from the team that led the majors in wins. Their non-pitcher offense ranked among the very best in the game. Their pitchers prevented runs very well, and a lot of it had to do with keeping the ball in the park and throwing strikes. Their defense was questioned entering the season, but ended up being a strength. Baserunning might be the one area where the team was below average.  Relentless Giants win NL West! | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1954

The Giants just did the impossible. On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick talks about the San Francisco Giants winning their 107th game, and with it the 2021 NL West crown. It's a truly unbelievable accomplishment for this resilient and relentless Giants team. They were expected to win in the neighborhood of 75 games, yet they were the best team in baseball pretty much all season long. The Dodgers tied a franchise record with 106 wins, but it wasn't enough. The Giants set their own franchise record with 107 victories, and they needed each and every one. No matter how the season ends, this is an accomplishment that will live on in franchise history. It wasn't easy at the end. The Dodgers had an all-time great second half, and they refused to lose down the stretch. The Giants played meaningful games right down to the end, including Game 162. Logan Webb started for the Giants, and he was fantastic from the very first pitch. He strcuk out the side in the 1st inning, and retired the first nine batters he faced. He got a rally started in the third inning with a single, and later walked and homered. Buster Posey delivered a huge two-run single with two outs that opened the scoring. Tommy La Stella, Wilmer Flores, and many others also contributed to the win. The Giants will get to sit back and relax as the Dodgers play a do-or-die elimination game on Wednesday against the Cardinals. The Giants will play the winning of that game in the Division Series, which starts on Friday at Oracle Park. The 107-win Giants have secured home field advantage throughout the playoffs. Ben discusses how the Giants match up against the four other playoff teams in the National League.  NL West title within reach as Giants sweep D-backs | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1925

Put the champagne on ice. On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick details the San Francisco Giants' tense win over the Arizona Diamondbacks, which reduced the Giants' magic number to clinch the NL West to two. It was an extremely ugly first inning for the Giants, but they rebounded to sweep the D-backs with a walk-off single by Late Night LaMonte Wade Jr. in the bottom of the 9th. Scott Kazmir started, and only lasted 1/3 of an inning. He walked two, there was sloppy defense by Austin Slater, and he ended up straining his hamstring covering first base. But the Giants' offense, led by Slater, Darin Ruf, Buster Posey, and Brandon Crawford, got to Madison Bumgarner, who was making his first start back in San Francisco in front of fans.  Giants' 104th win is most in SF history—but Dodgers won't go quietly | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1833

On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick discusses the San Francisco Giants' record-setting 104th win of the year, the most the franchise has had in the San Francisco era. Despite the historic accomplishment, the Giants still don't have the NL West division crown wrapped up with just four games remaining. The Dodgers, on paper one of the greatest teams ever assembled, have 102 wins and are right on the Giants' heels. They trailed 9-5 in the 7th last night but stormed back with five home runs in the final two frames to defeat the Padres 11-9. The Giants' magic number to clinch the West is three, setting up a critical matchup tonight against former Giants legend Madison Bumgarner. Last night's win was tense, and unusual for this Giants club. Alex Wood was the star, firing six more shutout innings. Since coming off the COVID IL, Wood has been absolutely brilliant, striking out 17 and walking zero. That bodes very well for a potentially long run in the playoffs, as the Giants have four healthy and effective starters they can rely on for the time being. But the Giants struggled to score on Wednesday, ultimately scoring their one and only run on a single, stolen base, sacrifice bunt, and sacrifice fly. It was a manufactured run for the Giants, who normally out-slug their opponents. This sparked the debate about whether the Giants are "too reliant on home runs," which Ben argues is a flawed and incorrect argument.  Giants' 103rd win matches SF-era record | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1903

Best team in San Francisco Giants history? On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick talks about the Giants' 103rd win of the season, which matches their San Francisco-era best. The win was important, as it allowed the Giants to maintain their two-game lead over the Dodgers, who won in San Diego. It was a start for Logan Webb, who was solid but inefficient. The defense was not always great behind him, as LaMonte Wade Jr. whiffed on a pickoff throw that led to a run early in the game. Wade Jr. was the first to man first base in Brandon Belt's absence, but the true replacement for Belt on the field was Steven Duggar in center field. Earlier in the day, it was reported that Belt's fractured thumb will take approximately four weeks to heal, and he's going to be re-evaluated in two weeks. The Giants' bullpen was up and down in the critical win. Tyler Rogers had another rough outing in the eighth inning, but Camilo Doval was absolutely electric in the ninth. Save opportunities are there for the taking with Jake McGee on the injured list, and Doval was up to the task on Tuesday night. He featured a wipe-out slider and a fastball that topped out at 102 mph.  Brandon Belt's thumb is fractured | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1825

Brandon Belt has a fractured thumb. On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick answers listeners' questions about the state of the San Francisco Giants. Among the questions asked and answered are: With Brandon Belt possibly out for the rest of the year, what is first base going to look like? LaMonte Wade Jr.? Darin Ruf? Kris Bryant? Will Darin Ruf play every day in Belt’s absence once Ruf’s back? Is the Giants' bullpen set without McGee as the closer? Who fills that role most often? Camilo Doval and Kervin Castro on the postseason roster? Doval in the 9th? With the structure of the playoffs, will the Giants build in any off days for Buster Posey, or can we expect to see him catch every game in the postseason? Any reason the Brewers will try at all this weekend against the Dodgers?
