BONUS: Tim Ferriss | The Art and Science of Meta-Learning | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:21:06

Learn from someone who is great at something they shouldn't be great at. "You don't need to be superhuman to get superhuman results." -Tim Ferriss The Cheat Sheet: The two language hacks Tim recommends. What's the exercise he'd do if he could do only one for the rest of his life? His recommendations for how and why to fast. What is fear setting and how can you apply it to your life? What are saccadic movements? And so much more... Tim Ferriss is a man known around the globe for experimenting and discovering the best, fastest and most effective ways to learn something. Whether it's spending a week to learn to play drums for Foreigner live in concert or speaking Tagalong fluently during a Filipino interview, Tim has done it. On today's episode we talk about meta learning for language and other skills, what happened to his TV show, and his unique take on goals and risk. Listen in for all of that and more on this bonus edition of The Art of Charm. Click Here to Support The Show and Check Out Host Gator! More About This Show: If you've followed Tim Ferriss for any length of time you know he's man of experimentation and meta learning. In fact the title of his blog is Experiments in Lifestyle Design, completely appropriate for what he shares with the world. On today's episode Tim and I talk about language hacks (and how they apply to other areas of life), the details of his current fasting regimen, the status of his TV show and his views on goal setting, risk and what he wishes every single adult would do at least once in their lifetime. When it comes to goal setting Tim uses an approach he calls fear setting. He does this at least every 8 weeks, and any time he feels overwhelmed or anxious about a decision he has to make. And his process, of course, is quite simple. First he takes a physical piece of paper, lays it down landscape style and then he creates three columns. In the column on the far left he makes a list of every possible thing that could go wrong if he does whatever he's considering doing. He is very specific and writes down every single thing he can think of. In the middle column he writes down everything he can do to mitigate the items in the far left column. And then in the last column he makes a list of everything he can do to get back to where he is right now, if all the breakdowns from the far left column actually happen. With that information he makes an informed and calculated decision that minimizes his risk, because as he puts it, risk is "an irreversible negative outcome". Continuing from there we also discuss two of his favorite skills he's learned: swimming and speed reading. He once thought learning to swim was an impossible thing for him because he was into his 30s before he tried it. Once he had conquered the skill, he began to ask himself "What else once have I assumed is impossible?". The other skill we discuss is speed reading. Tim also gives us a tip to double our reading speed and increase comprehension at the same time. As you might expect it's a super simple trick that you can do as soon as you listen. Tune in for that and then join me in thanking Tim for sharing his masterful meta learning techniques on today's episode. We'll see you next time on The Art of Charm! THANKS, TIM FERRISS!  BONUS: Omar Zenhom | The $100 MBA | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:40:29

You don't have to reinvent yourself to do something new. "No one cares about how much you know til you show them you care." -Omar Zenhom The Cheat Sheet: How to frame failure in a productive way. Should you forget your past skills when starting a new venture? How do you know if you have a legit business concept? Why comparing yourself to others is just a distraction. How to craft your elevator pitch for maximum impact. And so much more... Do you think you're too old to start something new? Or perhaps you think every great business idea has already been done and you're just too late to market. Not so says our guest on today's show. Omar Zenhom is the leader and face of The $100 MBA. On this episode we talk about why is "late start" and lack of business knowledge was actually an asset in starting his company, The $100 MBA. Listen in for all of that and more on this bonus edition of The Art of Charm. Click Here to Support The Show and Check Out HostGator! More About This Show: Omar Zenhom is a teacher through and through. He worked in the education field as an ESL teacher (English as a Second Language) and he spent 10 years living and teaching ESL in Dubai. But throughout his teaching career he was always interested in entrepreneurship. If he wasn't reading about it, he was hustling on the side to see what business would work and testing his mettle to see if he had what it takes to be a full-time entrepreneur. It wasn't until fairly recently that he made the leap into entrepreneurship with The $100 MBA company. The brand began back in 2013 and his podcast was launched in the fall of 2014. Today it stands as one of the top-rated podcasts in all of iTunes. On this episode we talk about his "late entry" into podcasting, how his lack of business experience became an asset and why it's never too late to go after what you want in business or in life in general. When Omar began his podcast he knew he had to differentiate himself from the rest of the crowd. But instead of reinventing himself he leaned on his background and his knowledge: teaching. He and his fiance Nicole spent two months brainstorming, planning and organizing before the launch of The $100 MBA. One of the most important he makes is they planned for the long haul. They weren't looking at this as a short-term gain but a long-term legacy and that's what made them so successful. Another important aspect of their success is their strategy for connecting and providing for their audience. If you're wondering what to give your audience Omar has some questions you can ask yourself such as "How can I delight people?" "If this were my mom (or other loved one) how would I be giving to him or her?" And then create your content and your marketing strategy based on that. As Omar points out no one cares about what you know (or are providing) until they know how much you care. When you come from that mindset - whether it's in business or other relationships - you have a greater chance of creating real, genuine relationships that benefit everyone. We also discuss how to set your own level of achievement and how to know what to focus on first when starting a business. Big thanks to Omar for sharing his experiences on those topics and thanks to you for being here. We'll see you next time on The Art of Charm! THANKS OMAR ZENHOM!  395: Olivia Fox Cabane | The Science of Creativity and Genius | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:53:30

We can induce creativity, innovation and genius from our minds. "We are a vast magma of instincts and emotions with a thin veneer of civilization on top." -Olivia Fox Cabane The Cheat Sheet: What is a metaphorical insight and how can you use it? The Thin Air Myth: what is it and why is it a myth? What James Watt and Phineas Gage have taught us about the brain. This is one of the biggest blocks to your genius ideas: what is it? What high performance athletes do differently than other athletes. And so much more... Have you ever had a eureka moment? A split second flash of genius? Whether you have or not, there's now a way to create that experience on demand. And here to tell us more is Olivia Fox Cabane. Olivia is the author of The Charisma Myth and joins us to discuss the fascinating science of creativity and genius on today's show. Listen in for all of that and more on episode 395 of The Art of Charm. Click Here to Support The Show and Check Out Host Gator! More About This Show: Olivia Fox Cabane is known as an expert on behavioral science, and applying it to everyday life to become more productive, more effective and create more breakthroughs. Currently she is the Director of Innovation at Stanford's StartX program and has two additional books about to be published. On today's show we discuss why breakthroughs are not accidental, what we've learned about the neuroscience behind epiphanies as well as ways you can realize more of your mind's insights and genius ideas. One of the most fascinating topics we dive is the different modes of the brain. The default mode network is your brain's network composed of 10-13 different areas that are responsible for the creative, innovation and genius. Another mode your brain has is executive mode. Executive mode is just what it sounds like: that part of your brain that makes decisions, executes and puts plans into actions. But here's the kicker: only one part of your brain can be in charge at a time. So if your executive mode is always on your default mode network (or DMN) cannot be running the show. That means if you are constantly engaging your decision-making mind and are in executive mode, your genius ideas have no way to come through. Turning off executive mode is simple: do repetitive tasks that are basically mindless. Like showering or washing the dishes or driving: these are things you already do the executive mode of your brain doesn't need to be engaged in for you to complete them. And that means your DMN can kick in. You can do what high caliber professional athletes do and create little rituals to tell your brain it's time to ramp up or ramp down. Think of baseball players and their rituals: some brush off their shoes in the batter's box and then tap home plate between pitches. They are telling their brains to power on into high performance mode, and slow down. On this episode Olivia and I also discuss the roles uncertainty and shame play in our creative capacities, what we can do to overcome our innate fear of both and why choice minimal lifestyle can be so liberating and freeing for our DMN! You'll want to give this one your full attention, enjoy.  394: Kristen Brown | The Happy Hour Effect | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:49:55

You can control what happens in your life. "We forget we have the power to control what happens in between stressful times. " -Kristen Brown The Cheat Sheet: Do successful people simply handle stress better? The origins of fight or flight and why that response is still with us today. What's the best natural anti-depressant and how can you produce it? What are the earliest signs of stress? What is Kristen's #1 productivity tip? And so much more... Stress is something we all have, it's simply part of being alive today. But how we handle the times between stressful moments has a direct impact on how we cope with the actual stressors in life. Kristen Brown, creator and author of The Happy Hour Effect joins us to talk about how making ourselves happy in between stressful experiences can help us cope with stress easier and lead to healthier, more productive lives. Listen in for all of that and more on episode 395 of The Art of Charm. Click Here to Support The Show and Check Out Host Gator! More About This Show: Kristen Brown didn't simply wake up one morning and decide to create and write The Happy Hour Effect. No, life handed her one of the most stressful and heart-wrenching experiences possible: her young, fit and seemingly healthy husband died. He was 31 and had just been given a clean bill of health by his doctor. Needless to say Kristen's life went into a tailspin. She was being forced to raise their 10-month old baby by herself, in addition to her very stressful corporate job. Now facing single motherhood, Kristen was adding stress on top of stress. Her corporate job, which she had always loved, soon became a source of frustration rather than the solid rock it had always been for her. With time she realized she had control of what was going to happen next. And she knew she could either be swallowed up widowhood or she could face life head on. She chose the latter. Today she shares how handling stress of any kind or magnitude impacts us in every way, and how we live our lives during non-stressful crisis times also impacts our capacity to cope with stress. We also discuss the five elements of the happy hour effect, the two traps we routinely fall into and what GOALSS stands for. The five elements of the happy hour effect are: People: surround yourself with the right people who will lift you higher, not people who will bring you down. Presence: check in with yourself and examine how you are engaging in your own life right now. What is your mood, what are your behaviors and are they helping the situation or environment? Passion: Routines are good to help us avoid stress but we also need to stretch ourselves and build in passion. Productivity: This is about making progress on the right goals for the right reasons so you impact others' lives. Peace: You know stress is inevitable, but you also know you control the times in between the stressful events. This is also about how to you create the right routines and processes to make you feel in control, even when life gets hard. Another aspect of the happy hour effect we discuss is the acronym goalss. Kristen created this acronym to help people create goals they set and actually achieved, not lofty goals way beyond their current lives. Goalss stands for: G for gut check. Does it feel right in your gut? If it does, go for it. If not, reconsider and revise your goal. O for obtainable. Be sure you can obtain your goals with what you're doing right now. A for actionable. You should be able to take an action on any goal right now. L for life-oriented. If you want to quit a bad habit but that habit helps you cope with the major stress in your life, deal with the stress first and then quit the bad habit. S for supported. It's important to keep people around you who support you and lift you up. S for small steps. Taking small steps is easier than taking giant leaps, and you're far more likely to make progress with small steps. On today's show Kristen and I also discuss the difference between being reactive and proactive, as well as her smartest tips on productivity. We chat about those topics and more, so listen in to hear it all. THANKS KRISTEN BROWN!  392: Simon Sinek | Start With Why | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:46:15

What matters most is why you do what you do. Simon Sinek, best-selling author and visionary, joins us to talk about how to start with why and how to be a leader on episode 392 of The Art of Charm. The Cheat Sheet: What are the three levels our brain processes information? When we take work we love, we eventually make more money: true? What is shareholder supremacy and why doesn't it work? What was the Glass-Steagall Act? Can you still be a leader if you are not the boss? And so much more… Far too many of us go to jobs we don't love today. Have you ever wondered if there's a cost to doing so? Or if there really is a way to enjoy, even love, the work we do every day? Our guest for today's show says yes to both questions. Simon Sinek, best-selling author, visionary and speaker, joins us to talk about how to start with why, how to be a leader no matter your title, and how to find fulfillment in every area of your life.   Simon Sinek is one of today's foremost thought leaders and visionaries; his personal reason for doing what he does is to inspire others to do what inspires them. On today's show he shares the missing piece of starting with why, the massive impact it has on your family and loved ones if you are unhappy in your work and how you can be a leader regardless of your position. If you ask someone why they do what they do, they probably won't have an answer. Simon says most of us know what we do and how we do it, but not why. The why is the missing piece of the puzzle. And it's that why that is so key to living an inspired and inspiring life. If we come home from our job and complain about it every day it not only makes us feel terrible and those around us, but it sets an example for our kids. We're showing our children that work has to be something that is endured and makes us miserable, rather than something that brings us joy, fulfillment, and purpose. But we can change all of that. If we run a business we can become a leader, and not just a boss. We can carefully select our new hires to be sure they are a fit for our company. And we can put our current employees first who will then put our customers first which will then lead to an increase in profits and growth in our company. If we aren't the CEO or a manager in our current company, we can still be leaders. We can start flexing this muscle in little ways by holding the elevator door for someone, and making a new pot of coffee if we drink the last cup. As leaders we choose to be responsible for the people around us and for their fulfillment and their growth, not just our own. Simon and I also talk about why a leadership buddy is so important, why most companies' hierarchy is so illogical, and why the economic decisions of the '80s and '90s are still having an impact on us today. Simon shared on those topics and more, so listen in to hear it all. THANKS, SIMON SINEK!  391: Steven Rambam | The Real Life of a Private Investigator | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:06:43

A private investigator's life isn't like what we see on TV. "No fraud can survive real due diligence." -Steve Rambam The Cheat Sheet: Prime bank guarantee fraud: what is it and how does it work? Why is the US a "garden of eden" for bad guys in general? How his TV show, Nowhere to Hide, came to be. Why his business doubled within 2 years following a bogus arrest. Are there scam lists and are you on one? And so much more... Have you ever wondered what the real life of a private investigator is like? Is it as exciting as it's made out to be on TV shows, movies and in books? Or do they just sit behind a desk, pushing papers and pens around? Today's guest is here to let us in on the reality of a real-life private investigator. Steve Rambam has been a PI for nearly 30 years, is the head of Pallorium, an agency of licensed investigators and has his own TV show called Nowhere to Hide. We talk about all of that and more on episode 391 of The Art of Charm. Click Here to Support The Show at our sponsor Lynda.com! More About This Show: Thirty years ago Steve got a call from a friend called. His friend promised Steve free beer if he'd to come to Texas and help catch some thieves who were stealing farming equipment. Steve agreed and shortly after found himself the proud bearer of a Texas state private investigator and security company license. Today Steve holds licenses in several states, as well as permits to work in other countries. He's the head of Pallorium and the man behind the TV show, Nowhere to Hide. Today we talk about some of his most interesting investigations, the two types of people who get taken in by a con artist and a few simple ways he recommends to protect yourself and avoid being taken advantage of. There are two types of victims who fall prey to a fraudster and his tricks: either the innocent ones or the ones with a bit of hustler in them themselves. The innocent people are the ones who fall for the affinity fraud: these are the people who give money to their pastor for a new church, only to find out the new church is really his new vacation home. Or the people who give to someone in their close-knit community. They assume the person can be trusted because he is part of their community. The hustlers who get taken in fraud cases are the people who think they're getting in on some kind of secret. They're being given inside info that no one else is privy to and love that fact. You often see CEOs or high-level execs, and other movers and shakers get taken in by these schemes. If you want to avoid being conned there are a few simple things to remember: no fraud can survive true due diligence. If you really do your homework you'll eventually spot a fraud. And if you hire someone either to help you investigate an opportunity or pursue a fraudster, make sure you do your homework on that person. Investigators, lawyers, and counselors all must be licensed so check on the status of your person's licensing. Steve also shares some incredible stories, including some you won't see on his TV show. Listen in and they'll help you avoid cams. Then join us in thanking Steve for his wisdom on this incredibly important topic. And special thanks to you for being here! See you next time on The Art of Charm. THANKS STEVE RAMBAM!  389: Scott Stratten | Unmarketing | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:43:14

We are always marketing ourselves whether we know it or not. "You can't get rabid fans without rabid detractors." -Scott Stratten The Cheat Sheet: How he uses his appearance to his advantage. What can you learn from his speech at The Venetian? Scott debunks the myths of social media. How did his jackass whisper statement become his mantra? What two things will he never talk about and why? And so much more... If someone has ever made a negative personal comment directed at you you know how hard it is to brush it off. Our guest for today has learned firsthand how to let go of detractors and focus on the people who support him. Scott Stratten has been named one of the key influencers in the world. He's also the head honcho of Unmarketing, author of several books including one by that same name and is an international keynote speaker. We talk about what "unmarketing" is, why it stirred up so many naysayers and how he's dealt with them (and more) on episode 389 of The Art of Charm. Click Here to Support The Show and Get 10% Off Onnit! Today's show is also brought to you by Casper, Get $50 toward any mattress purchase by visiting Casper and using promo code AOC! More About This Show: If you saw Scott Stratten on the street you might mistake him for a homeless man; he's well-bearded with long hair, tattoos and usually wears jeans and a tee. But that appearance misleads many folks; Scott is a famous author, keynote speaker and entrepreneur who made his biggest splash with his Unmarketing brand. Today we talk about what that term unmarketing means, the commotion it stirred up (and continues to stir up), why he welcomes thoughtful debates and ignores trolls, and how important it is to create connections and build networks in every area of your life. Unmarketing simply means to stop marketing, start connecting and engaging. It's the idea that we become experts, position ourselves as such in front of our target markets so they chose us when the time comes. It is NOT the traditional means of marketing: splashing your goods and services in front of anyone with no regard for whether or not they're part of your target market. Unmarketing doesn't just apply to entrepreneurs and business owners though, it applies to all of us. Scott says we are all marketing and creating our own branding whether we know it or not. All of us are never not under review in any area of our lives from work to our relationships. Keeping with that idea he's been able to separate the critics from the trolls, and his advice applies for all of us. First and foremost he believes legit criticism is needed, and you'll know it's legit because it's not personal. The minute it becomes personal don't engage. Second, our job is never to convince others not to hate you; doing so simply drains your energy and your strength, don't waste your time on those people. He also gives a great example of how he dug his well before he was thirsty, and shares how that ties into unmarketing. We talk about the myths of social media, and much more!  388: Gretchen Rubin | Mastering Happiness | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:58:10

On today's episode you'll hear simple and effective habits to help you create a calmer, more orderly home. You'll also hear the strategy of the treat and loopholes we sometimes use to justify breaking a good habit. A simple and effective way to create a calmer, more orderly home is to use the one-minute rule: if it takes a minute or less, do it right away! When you get home, put your jacket away instead of dropping it wherever it lands. Your home will feel orderly and so will your mind. When it comes to forming everyday habits one effective strategy she recommends is the strategy of the treat. Choose a treat that's good for you and healthy and adds to your life, like buying new music every week if you're a music lover or lighting candles in your home. The treat needs to be something you do for yourself consistently, think of it as a way to refortify and take care of yourself rather than a reward you have to obtain. If you are taking care of yourself and staying restored you will be more likely to maintain other healthy habits because good treats bolster your will power and self-discipline. Gretchen also highlights a few of the loopholes we use to get out of "being good", these are rationalizations we make in the moment to break a healthy habit. There are over twenty she talks about in her book, Better Than Before: Mastering the Habits of Our Everyday Life, but one we discuss today is the self-actualization loophole. This is where the rationalization that it's ok to have this piece of cake because we need to enjoy life or we tell ourselves "you only live once". If you're using that train of the thought ask yourself how you'll feel about your decision later: will you feel good or will you not even remember that piece of cake? If you'll feel good and it will create a positive memory for you, then go for it. If it won't, then don't do it. We also talk about how to frame your treats, why we can't always create habits (even the fun ones!) and the power of accountability in creating last change.
