Gab & Jam Episode 105 Tips For Mixing For The D.I.Y. Rock Star Podcast | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:06:30

Gab & Jam Episode 105 Tips for Mixing for the D.I.Y. Rock Star Podcast This episode is a part of our Blog-vember 2019 trifecta of three posts a day—a video, a podcast, and a blog post. This year the focus is tips for the D.I.Y. Rock Star. We developed these methods through our own decades worth of experiences. The BIG Take-aways: You guys can give US mixing tips! We really hate mixing, so…. The best advice we can give is to start with good, clean tracks. We solo tracks and if there is something crappy about it, we can fix it along the way. I like to start off with good clean tracks, so that we can pull up a flat mix without a lot of EQ, because the way that I recorded it becomes the way it is. It took a lot of trial and error. –We used to be folks that said we’d fix it in the mix, but now clean tracks are the secret sauce to a well-rounded finished mix. If you are using software, there is no reason to keep things that are not satisfactory. You can use reference mixes to tweak your mix, but we don’t know what genres necessarily are the key standard, so we go with our internal artist monitor. If it feels right, then it is right. Even if something feels like it could be a, say, Prince sound, we may not want it sound like a Prince sound. We like stuff that feels raw and alive, so if it sounds like it comes from the basement, we are happy. We want to keep our edginess. But we are also interested in remixes. If you are interested in doing remixes of our work, contact us at bloomingprejippie@gmail.com. What has been your favorite episode of our 2019 Blog-vember episode? We’ve had so many, so it would be nice to know what you liked most. Remember, to make time for what you have determined is important in your life. What do you think? What other ways should be added to our next list for tips for the D.I.Y. Rock Star? Please share your thoughts us in the comments below.  Gab & Jam Episode 104 Tips For Songwriting For The D.I.Y. Rock Star Podcast | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:05:31

Gab & Jam Episode 104 Tips for Songwriting for the D.I.Y. Rock Star Video Description This episode is a part of our Blog-vember 2019 trifecta of three posts a day—a video, a podcast, and a blog post. This year the focus is tips for the D.I.Y. Rock Star. We developed these methods through our own decades worth of experiences. We’re happy to offer some ways that we have dealt with a variety of things and share what has helped us move forward in joy and with peace of mind. If these strategies help you, then we are happy. (Of course, if you prefer to watch the video episode, click this link: http://bit.ly/Ep104BV2019vid30 ) The BIG Take-aways: When writing a song, make sure that the parts that you assemble “speak” to us AND they need to serve the structure of the song. When we write the lyrics first, sometimes it is hard to fit them to music. So, there may be ideas that stood apart from the music that were grand and deep, but don’t pair with the music that we had assumed would accompany them. Songwriting is a natural process, but lyrics can sometimes be the most difficult part to fit within the “story” of the music. Lyrics are like casting the right actor to help tell this song’s story. As a consequence, we have a lot of unfinished songs, where there is music with no lyrics and also lyrics that have no music. Sometimes, years later, we will get a feel of how the two of them can meld together to form a song we like. (Songs like “So Much Better”—SoundCloud link: http://bit.ly/somuchbettersc are an example of this. It sat for 15 years before we were able to put the lyrics to it.) On the other hand, though, there are times when we are writing the music and the lyrics reveal themselves immediately and the song is finished in record-quick time. When that happens, the music pulls the lyrics out. Our best advice is that, like a muscle, songwriting requires practice. Keep writing songs and you will get better. Remember, to make time for what you have determined is important in your life. What do you think? What other ways should be added to our next list for tips for the D.I.Y. Rock Star?  Gab & Jam Episode 103 Tips For Playing Keyboards For The D.I.Y. Rock Star Podcast | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:05:22

Gab & Jam Episode 103 Tips for Playing Keyboards for the D.I.Y. (Of course, if you prefer to listen to the podcast episode, click this link: ) The BIG Take-aways: The BIGGEST tip is to stick to the black keys! That is the way we wrote things for a long time, because it allows you to be free-flowing and not worry about “hitting wrong notes.” It has a Japanese flavor to what is created in that manner. But, seriously, that is one strategy, along with the same advice for any other instrument. Spend time with it, learn chords, use YouTube as a music teacher. Try to replicate the feel of a piano, which is different than simply playing. Sounding like a pianist versus an organist versus a synthesizer player; the feel you choose depends on the effect you want for your song. No matter what, make sure you are feeling the music you are creating. Make sure you are leaving room to connect with the musical vibe that is being communicated through you. Try to make sure you are a faithful conduit to what the spirit of the music and play what you feel. That is where the magic/connection/inspiration happens. Music is not like other art forms, because you don’t see it, but you definitely feel it. Awash yourself in your playing. Remember, to make time for what you have determined is important in your life. What do you think? What other ways should be added to our next list for tips for the D.I.Y. Rock Star? Please share your thoughts us in the comments below.  Gab & Jam Episode 102 Tips For South By Southwest For The D.I.Y. Rock Star Podcast | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:03:48

Gab & Jam Episode 102 Tips for South By Southwest for the D.I.Y. (Of course, if you prefer to listen to the podcast episode, click this link: ) The BIG Take-aways: Here are a few tips to help you navigate the South By Southwest conference. (see blog posts for more detailed tips: http://bit.ly/sxswworthit and http://bit.ly/sxswobservations ) The minute they release the schedule—which they do on the app—figure out your schedule. There is SOOOO much to do, so you don’t want to get lost in the overwhelm. Stick to your plan. Don’t try to do everything. Stay focused on what you are looking to get out of South By Southwest. —When we went last year, it was our first time and, though we thought we were prepared, it was so massive that we weren’t sure if we should ditch our plans to do other things. We learned that this is NOT the way to do it. What ends up happening is that it is hard to find your way back to your big objectives and might miss the moment in doing so. What is going to be your end game? Focus on that. Stay focused on that. We ended up wasting time on things that were not for us. What we learned after sitting through things that we didn’t need to; if there are overlapping sessions that interest you, be prepared to leave a session that doesn’t seem fruitful if there is something better happening elsewhere. Position yourself near the end of the aisle, so that you can leave easily. Also, don’t be afraid to divide and conquer, if there are two or more of you. Remember, to make time for what you have determined is important in your life. What do you think? What other ways should be added to our next list for tips for the D.I.Y. Rock Star?  Gab & Jam Episode 100 Tips For Traveling With Instruments For The D.I.Y. Rock Star Podcast | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:03:01

Gab & Jam Episode 100 Tips for Traveling with Instruments for the D.I.Y. Rock Star Video Description This episode is a part of our Blog-vember 2019 trifecta of three posts a day—a video, a podcast, and a blog post. This year the focus is tips for the D.I.Y. Rock Star. We developed these methods through our own decades worth of experiences. (Of course, if you prefer to listen to the podcast episode, click this link: ) The BIG Take-aways: Here are our tips for traveling with instruments. We are recently on the lookout for a travel guitar, because it would allow us more options when traveling than we currently have. We now have TSA flight cases for our instruments. We loosen the strings and check it when we get to the gate. Because it is a TSA flight case and locks, Bruce is not as concerned with how the guitar is treated by baggage handlers. Ideally, we would like to be able to have an instrument—along with the travel studio—in case the inspiration strikes, we can create a song as we are out and about in the world. Remember, to make time for what you have determined is important in your life. What do you think? What other ways should be added to our next list for tips for the D.I.Y. Rock Star?  Gab & Jam Episode 99 Tips for File Management for the D.I.Y. Rock Star Podcast | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:06:23

Gab & Jam Episode 99 Tips for File Management for the D.I.Y. Rock Star Video Description This episode is a part of our Blog-vember 2019 trifecta of three posts a day—a video, a podcast, and a blog post. This year the focus is tips for the D.I.Y. Rock Star. We developed these methods through our own decades worth of experiences. The BIG Take-aways: Here are some tips when it relates to computer file management. If you are doing videos, blog posts, photos, podcasts, and songs—like us—you need a reliable way to store and to easily locate files to use. There are all these different pieces of a post that need to be kept together, so that when it is time to distribute them, you can find the piece(s) that you need. It is for that reason that we have come up with some systems to help do this. –Keep in mind, though, that these systems were developed due to the trial and error of not being concerned with this early on and losing track of quite a few valuable assets. (For more, listen to the episode or consult the blog post.) Remember, to make time for what you have determined is important in your life. What do you think? What other ways should be added to our next list for tips for the D.I.Y. Rock Star? Please share your thoughts us in the comments below.  Gab & Jam Episode 98 Tips For Playing Bass For The D.I.Y. Rock Star Podcast | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:05:22

Gab & Jam Episode 98 Tips for Playing Bass for the D.I.Y. (Of course, if you prefer to listen to the podcast episode, click this link: ) The BIG Take-aways: Here are our tips for what to do if you want to play bass. Our tips are similar to what we said in the Guitar Playing tips (see http://bit.ly/Ep97BV2019blog23 ). Get the instrument first, then start learning songs. You can use YouTube to serve as a teacher. We learned by playing our songs first and then, learning others’ songs. Bruce realized that, if he could sing it, he could play it. He is not a perfectionist, but he replicates the “feel” of a song, which is all you need to get the job done. Get a bass that feels easier to play. –You may need to have someone “set it up”; having the strings are lower to the neck makes it easier to play. –If you feel that the instrument is “fighting” you, it will be discouraging to play. Therefore, make sure you get a lighter gauge strings, because they are easier to play. Also, make sure that the neck is not warped. You might want to go to a music store, where you can consult with a salesman, who can help you choose the right instrument for your needs. Remember, to make time for what you have determined is important in your life. What do you think? What other ways should be added to our next list for tips for the D.I.Y. Rock Star?  Gab & Jam Episode 97 Tips For Playing Guitar For The D.I.Y. Rock Star Podcast | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:04:08

Gab & Jam Episode 97 Tips for Playing Guitar for the D.I.Y. (Of course, if you prefer to listen to the podcast episode, click this link: ) The BIG Take-aways: The biggest tip is to just play the instrument. Pick it up, crank up a YouTube How To video, and get to playing. Learn a few chords and, before you know it, you will know enough to write a song. Don’t be overwhelmed. It might make it easier if you start learning songs first, in order to learn your way around the instrument. There are a variety of ways to learn, so you should experiment in order to figure out what works best for you. Don’t worry about the technical aspects first (notes, theory, etc.); learn a few songs, then you will learn the chords and your fretboard. If you are inspired to play, then surrender to the process and let it unfold. Then, exercise patience and institute practice. Bruce keeps his bass and his guitar by the couch—in front of the television—so that he can practice everyday. Finally, run your own race. Don’t worry about competing with anyone else. (see Ep 94: http://bit.ly/Ep94BV2019blog20 ) Whether you feel as if you know more or less than others, there is always something you can learn (and something that you can teach). If you feel inspired to play the guitar, then do it. Remember, to make time for what you have determined is important in your life. What do you think?  Gab & Jam Episode 96 Tips For Traveling For The D.I.Y. Rock Star Podcast | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:05:34

Gab & Jam Episode 96 Tips for Traveling for the D.I.Y. Rock Star Video Description This episode is a part of our Blog-vember 2019 trifecta of three posts a day—a video, a podcast, and a blog post. This year the focus is tips for the D.I.Y. Rock Star. We developed these methods through our own decades worth of experiences. The BIG Take-aways: We have recently begun more international travel and these are some things that we have figured out that work. Try to be as well-rested as you can as you are passing through customs, both going into and coming out of countries. You need to be alert. You make sure your bags are customs-friendly, wear shoes that are easy to take off, and that you have your correct documents when you are asked for them. One of our newest tricks is to check as many bags as possible, so that there is less stuff to have to take through the security gate. You need to keep your composure as much as possible, so that when TSA agents—with sometimes thick accents—ask you key questions, you can answer with confidence and not get upset at what may seem like silly questions—when you’re standing there with your belt, your jacket, your shoes, your laptop, and all your luggage to get back situated. So, checking any bags that are extra heavy, awkward, or would mean just one more “something” to deal with may be your best bet. (For more tips, listen to the episode or consult the blog post at http://www.bloomingprejippie.com ) Remember, to make time for what you have determined is important in your life. What do you think? What other ways should be added to our next list for tips for the D.I.Y. Rock Star? Please share your thoughts us in the comments below.  Gab & Jam Episode 95 Tips For Pitching For The D.I.Y. Rock Star Podcast | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:05:00

Gab & Jam Episode 95 Tips for Pitching for the D.I.Y. (Of course, if you prefer to listen to the podcast episode, click this link: ) The BIG Take-aways: How do you convince others to buy into your ideas? As far as we can see, there is no winning formula; all you can do is put yourself out there, as yourself, and either they are going to be sold or not. It seems that getting your work to others is the first key step in all of this. If no one hears your work, no one can book you. In that way, distribution and promotion are the cornerstone of your “pitch.” Perhaps this is more of a mass, passive pitch, but it has been the “winning” formula to build us to this point. People seeing us being active, putting out our work, and that has gotten us the attention that has helped move the needle in advancing our enterprises. Many times people sell you things you already want, whereas with art, it may be more difficult to determine what they want, while trying to lead them to where you want them want to want. There is quite a bit of rejection in this business. This makes it hard to navigate trust of yourself and trust of others. Being on top has its pitfalls for insecurity too. Even if people are falling all over you, you begin to be suspicious of why they are around you. Or there becomes that pressure to continue to give the people whatever it is that you gave them at first, instead of growing on to that next level. That’s what made a band like The Beatles is a phenomenon was the fact that they were able to continually metamorphous through each album despite the pressure to give the people what they had already bought into. The fact that they were able to be experimental and still commercial was incredible. Perhaps this is a side effect of a really different and vastly changing time in music and in society. Regardless of what you pitch, try to stay true to and trust yourself whether people are buying your art/talent/music/personality or not. Remember, to make time for what you have determined is important in your life. What do you think? What other ways should be added to our next list for tips for the D.I.Y. Rock Star?  Gab & Jam Episode 94 Tips For Competing With Yourself For The D.I.Y. Rock Star Podcast | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:09:21

Gab & Jam Episode 94 Tips for Competing with Yourself for the D.I.Y. (Of course, if you prefer to listen to the podcast episode, click this link: ) The BIG Take-aways: Here are our tips for competing with yourself: This is ACTUALLY the prime way that we motivate ourselves is NOT to compete with ourselves. Instead of looking to others in terms of stats and achievements, we try to do our very best, which becomes our standard to beat. Whether it’s writing songs, running, etc., we are trying to be better now than I have been in the past. We can’t run someone’s race, since our lives and expectations are so different. We know, personally, when we are being lazy and when we are challenging ourselves. Plus, it is only a false perception to feel as though I understand someone else’s journey. We do look to others for inspiration and for the initial ways to approach something, but once we understand the process, we break the pattern of paying too close attention to what others are doing, so that we can figure out what works and will might succeed for what we’re doing. This process is more freeing than tying our success to someone else’s experiences. Our barometer for success is internal. Remember, to make time for what you have determined is important in your life. What do you think? What other ways should be added to our next list for tips for the D.I.Y. Rock Star?  Gab & Jam Episode 93 Tips For Getting Video - Ready For The D.I.Y. Rock Star Podcast | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:02:48

Gab & Jam Episode 93 Tips for Getting Video-Ready for the D.I.Y. (Of course, if you prefer to listen to the podcast episode, click this link: ) The BIG Take-aways: Here are our tips for getting ready to shoot a video. Not only do we need to come up with a topic—which sometimes requires research and consultation and notes—as well as thinking of what we will wear on-camera (to try to be impactful, fashionable and comfortable). On top of all of that, but as D.I.Y. Rock Stars, we have to concern ourselves with the technical stuff (like the cameras, the sound, the music, etc.) for the camera and then that it translates into audio (for our accompanying podcast). What we mean is that sometimes things that work for video do not work well for audio (which is one reason that we have not done a formal studio tour; it makes for a wonderful video, but won’t work when transferred into podcast form). (add in the video making link) Bruce’s main goal is to try to stay spontaneous and natural on-camera. He does quite an excellent job of not over-thinking what he will do and he just flows with whatever questions that I bat his way. Remember, to make time for what you have determined is important in your life. What do you think? What other ways should be added to our next list for tips for the D.I.Y. Rock Star?  Gab & Jam Episode 92 Tips For Productivity For The D.I.Y. Rock Star | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:06:56

Gab & Jam Episode 92 Tips for Productivity for the D.I.Y. Rock Star Podcast Description This episode is a part of our Blog-vember 2019 trifecta of three posts a day—a video, a podcast, and a blog post. This year the focus is tips for the D.I.Y. Rock Star. We developed these methods through our own decades worth of experiences. These are our tips for staying productive: Keeping a list is critical—the HUGE list is the vision (Here’s our vision post: http://bit.ly/rockstarvision )—then, there are goals associated with your vision. Those are the ones you track monthly, weekly, and daily. I spend a chunk of time doing monthly planning (Here’s our latest “Plan with Me” video: http://bit.ly/planwithmedos ), where I take those vision goals and figure out what can be done in the month to move that vision forward. Things don’t just happen; you HAVE to invest this time to keep your focus and to guide your path. (—We’re in the middle of building our social media following and working on producing a new newsletter and I have to make sure that I include actions that can make those things happen.) Those steps help make the planning yield results. Then, I go back to our monthly plan and break down each week. I try to be realistic and choose about 5 goals and plan at least one good hour a day for each of those goals. Though this seems like too little a time to do anything, it really does work. (Here’s our weekly planner download: http://bit.ly/bpblogplan ) If you are going to achieve anything within the music business, you will need to attend to the business needs of producing, distributing, and promoting your work. (Here’s our advice about D.I.Y. Rock Star branding: http://bit.ly/diyrockstarbranding ) Your music cannot just stay with you, you need to find places to share or to connect with people who are potential fans and/or particular partners. Start by sharing with your friends and family, and then finding more places to share your art, like live shows, etc., In the book we recently purchased, The Beautiful Ones, we realized how much Prince was concerned with his image and how he would present himself live. That is a critical component of growing your creative empire. You have to work on having the music, but on then to building your business empire. (Here’s the Prince Countdown: http://bit.ly/princecountdown ) What do you think? What other ways should be added to our next list for tips for the D.I.Y. Rock Star?  Gab & Jam Episode 91 Tips For Staying Inspired For The D.I.Y. Rock Star Podcast | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:06:53

Gab & Jam Episode 91 Tips for Staying Inspired for the D.I.Y. (Of course, if you prefer to listen to the podcast episode, click this link: ) The BIG Take-aways: Wow! This is a rather big topic, but we will do our best to keep it short. New gear sometimes inspires us, but we also like to look to cultural trends—like Asian-inspired bridal gowns trend—for inspiration for looks for videos and for photo shoots. Or, as we’ve probably mentioned before, we get inspired by dialogue in movies—and I am constantly jotting down bits of phrase that I want to remember—so that when it is time to create, we have a treasure-trove of fun and waiting ideas to pull from. These become the seeds of ideas that will be revisited later. As artists, we feel that we need to be open antennas and draw inspiration from whatever is going on around you. (To know more, check out the episode or the blog post at http://www.bloomingprejippie.com ) Remember, to make time for what you have determined is important in your life. What do you think? Bloomingprejippie says:

In this "Musical '"Discoveries'" episode, we will be sharing 10 musical artists who are a little off-the-beaten path, but who have inspired us in some way or another.  Either we have recently "discovered" them by appreciating work that they have already done, or we, literally, have recently discovered that they exist at all. Either way, there is something about their art that we would like to share, so that more folks can appreciate them too.

We are Bruce Theory and Victoria Moon (in conjunction with Prejippie Music Group, Inc.). We created Blooming Prejippie Zine to document our journey to summon our muse. The goal is to consume inspiring artifacts, deliberate and celebrate them, then spew the lovechild created by our previous influences and this newer stimuli; even while navigating “regular” lives. Yes, because even rock stars need inspiration.

Come with us. Be bold and blossom.
