Gab & Jam Episode 90 Tips for Grilling Steak for the D.I.Y. Rock Star Video Description This episode is a part of our Blog-vember 2019 trifecta of three posts a day—a video, a podcast, and a blog post. This year the focus is tips for the D.I.Y. Rock Star. (Of course, if you prefer to listen to the podcast episode, click this link: ) The BIG Take-aways: If you have tried Bruce’s steak, you will never want to eat anyone else’s steak! We buy t-bone steaks, then Bruce beats them, and seasons them with meat tenderizer, seasoning salt, and pepper. Vox cuts up red onions that are grilled with the steak. He gets the grill hot, put the steaks on the grill, and then Bruce flips profusely until they are done, which we think is pretty unconventional. But these are the best steaks ever! They’re always tender and always flavorful, whether they are rare or cooked well-done, which is amazing to me! Remember, to make time for what you have determined is important in your life. So, you have to ask myself when do you have enough gear or why am I buying gear? Sometimes, the answer is complicated. Sometimes, it’s because I can’t seem to figure out how to use the gear I’ve got, or that I don’t like what I am creating with what I’ve got. So, buying gear sometimes can help make me more creative and I will freely admit that. So, just for the purposes of trying something new and exciting, I will buy something new. Bruce looks at it as if it is the opposite of a bank account, where you want to end the day at a deficit in terms of calories burned versus calories taken in. Keep in mind that Bruce lost over 60 pounds—and Vox lost 54 pounds—over a decade ago, so we have put these principles into account. (Of course, if you prefer to listen to the podcast episode, click this link: ) The BIG Take-aways: I am going to piggy-back on what we said for the last episode about studio management. Our main video making tip is to “Keep it simple.” What I mean is that we have pared down to one camera for Blog-vember, so that there is less editing to do—Remember, we ARE putting up 3 posts a day—a video, a podcast, and a blog post—so the video needs to be short, sweet, and less complicated than normal to edit and publish. “Hit it. Quit it. Get on wit’ it!” If your goals are like ours, where video making is not your jam, but it’s just a means to an end, then you need to figure out how to do it effectively, but as efficiently as possible and still maintain your sanity. However, if you love editing (and the video making you do is a part of your creative process), then disregard this advice and enjoy as much shooting and editing as possible. (Of course, if you prefer to listen to the podcast episode, click this link: ) The BIG Take-aways: Our main management tip is to “Keep it simple.” Depending on the purpose of your studio, you may have a different view of managing their studio. Because our studio is for songwriting, Bruce does not like audio engineering or mixing, so the less of it he has to negotiate, the better. Not fighting with equipment helps keep us in the creative flow, so to keep things simple helps us vibe longer. However, if you are a gearhead and love collecting and fiddling with outboard gear and etc., you might really enjoy spending all day tweaking equipment. Even though, you may have a certain brand or model of guitar, you should play a particular guitar in order to decide if it’s the best fit for you. Each guitar is uniquely crafted, so each one sounds different. There may be tons of Les Pauls out there, but each one is made differently. I bought a Les Paul online and it is okay, and I bought a 1974 re-issue of a Fender Jazz Bass and it never was okay. As opposed to a Fender 1978 Jazz Bass and even though the strings were dead and the action was high, when I tried it, I loved it. That bass is still with me today. Stay open to the stimulus around you and channel it into your art consistently. Pretty soon, you will find that you will have an over-abundance of ideas that are useful, when it is time to create. Always stay open to share those ideas to the artists around you, so that the process can flow between you. Often you will end up with something completely beautiful and unexpected when you combine your ideas with someone else’s. (Of course, if you prefer to listen to the podcast episode, click this link: ) The BIG Take-aways: If you have never run before, start off by walking. Then, alternate between walking and running. Using a treadmill, Bruce would run for 1 minute and walk for 2 minutes, etc. He did this in order to build up his stamina. He also started at a slower pace and then increase over time. In time, you will be able to feel ready to step up to the next level. It was a while before I ran competitive races, but the standard was competing with myself and not with all the people around us. Run at least 5 times a week, once you feel you have acclimated to doing it. In other words, stay consistent, even if you are simply running a 20 minute run. Whatever you do, make sure you work up to it and that you stay consistent with it. Remember, to make time for what you have determined is important in your life. What do you think? The words provide a cultural connection by telling a story or making a statement. You want to clever, but not too clever. You want to be relatable, but not too trite. Also, the lyrics needs to fit the melody of the song. All this CAN make them difficult to write. • Keep your phone/computer/device nearby (to capture ideas). • Use tools like thesaurus and writing dictionary to aid in your writing. • Keep a running list of titles, bits of texts, dialogue (which can be the kernel of an idea). • Collaborate to help move your process along. • Re-write when you find better ideas.
