Gab & Jam Ep 134 My Music Is "dated"; So What? Podcast | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:15:42

Ep 134 My music is "dated"; so what? Video Description This episode piggybacks on Gab & Jam Ep 57, “What’s ‘retro’?” The topic relates to one that we overheard being discussed on SiriusXM’s show, “Volume,” where Larry Flick was talking about Evanescence’s new release. Flick mentioned that the new Evanescence sounds like the old Evanescence, which prompted him to ask what “lane” they fit in anymore. Flick said it doesn’t have a “lane” is because it’s “dated,” which we took to mean the derogatory incarnation of “retro.” @larryflick #larryflick #musiccategories #prejippie #bloomingprejippie #coronavirus #quarantine #musicianlifestyle #retro #dated #beyonce #onpurpose What do you think?  Gab & Jam Ep 132 Getting Rid Of Urban Music Category; Now What? Podcast | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:15:39

Ep 132 Getting Rid of Urban Music Category; Now What? This is a response to the Callie Ahlgrim (from The Insider.com), “The music industry is finally getting rid of the term 'urban' to categorize Black music — but it's not enough.” The post discusses the idea that, in the midst of showing solidarity with Black issues, Republic Records—followed by the Grammys—called themselves getting rid of labels that simply group all Black artists, but don’t reflect the actual genre that they are representing. (The example is Frank Ocean winning the 2013 Grammy in the Best Urban Contemporary category for his “Channel Orange” album.) Basically, as Tyler, the Creator noted, the categories designated for Black music is the only places you will see Black artists. Typically, they will not be noted in pop, rock, country, etc., and certainly not for album of the year. –The biggest example is Beyonce’s “Lemonade” losing to Adele’s “25” at the Grammys in 2017. The question is does getting rid of the label, “urban”—a place where you would chuck ALL Black artists—going to solve the problem of this inequity? @callieahlgrim #theinsider #musiccategories #prejippie #bloomingprejippie #coronavirus #quarantine #musicianlifestyle #blackartists #contemporaryrnb #beyonce #grammys #onpurpose What do you think?  Gab & Jam Ep 131 Is Funk Music Dead? Podcast | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:11:22

Ep 131 Is Funk Music Dead? Video Description We’ve asked this question in more than one way over the years, but because we are finishing up our funk album, “Sugar Fit,” we really need to figure a few things out about the prospect of launching this kind of product. Is Funk Music Dead? 1. Only old music on many playlists 2. Other kinds of music with the funk label (dance, Jonas Bros.) 3. Nobody wants to hear it? 4. Are all the veracious funk consumers dead? #diyrockstar #prejippie #bloomingprejippie #coronavirus #quarantine #funk #musicianlifestyle #isfunkdead What do you think? Do you listen to funk music?  Gab & Jam Ep 129 George Floyd Mourning: Ways Music Can Offer A Way Forward Podcast | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:15:18

Ep 129 George Floyd Mourning: Ways Music Can Offer a Way Forward It’s just days after the funeral and after all the officers have been charged in the horrible death of George Floyd at the hands of the Minneapolis Police Department. –Not to mention that we’re still in the middle of the Coronavirus pandemic…. It’s a lot for us humans of the Earth to take in. There is no way you are not affected in one way or another about any and all of this. Our prayers go out to the family and our hearts are hurting for the people who see themselves in this situation. It’s like some people have become fully alive and awakened to the idea that racial injustice still exists. As always, we love to offer some healing and hope, which is the impetus for this episode. Here’s how to use music/art/creative work to help you heal and as a way forward during this time. As a listener: • You can find music that helps you process the angst you are feeling at this time by listening to protest songs. The 60s has quite a catalog to choose from, including the works of Bob Dylan, etc. You may want something like Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On?” Or even more current Gary Clark Jr’s “This Land.” As a creator: • You can write music that helps you process your own feelings. #protest #diyrockstar #prejippie #bloomingprejippie #coronavirus #quarantine #georgefloyd #musicianlifestyle #dialogue #tips #strategies #voices #justice What do you think? Have you had a dialogue with people who have felt different from you? Have you listened to other people’s expression of their ideas on the matter? Further, have you written music to help express your thoughts and/or listened to others’ ideas on these important issues? We would LOVE to hear about it! Please share in the comments below.  Gab & Jam Ep 128 5 Reasons To Use A Pseudonym For A D.I.Y. Rock Star Podcast | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:18:46

Ep 128 5 Reasons to use a Pseudonym for a D.I.Y. Rock Star Video Description While we’ve only been on our recent journey only a few short years, we have been artists our whole life. Part of that journey requires that we ask the question of whether or not we want to don a pseudonym or two in order to advance our art. This episode explores this weird and wonderful idea. Here are our 5 Reasons for a D.I.Y. Rock Star to use a Pseudonym: 1. Expresses a multi-faceted personality (From the time I started realizing myself as an artist, I have changed my name to suit each phase of my development.) 2. Provides anonymity (Allows us artists who have day jobs NOT to feel that there will be reprisals for the honesty of our expression.) 3. Makes us braver. (Just like the cover of the internet helps distance us, so does a pseudonym. I feel as if I can say much more under this cover than I could without it.) 4. Helps establish identity. (A name can help brand one artist or project from the next. Before anyone even hears your music, that might have a notion about what they might hear based on your name.) 5. It’s fun. (I’ve always liked word-play, so partly, it’s just plain fun to devise new names that express what we’re feeling or the character of a project.) What do you think? Should an artist use a pseudonym? We would LOVE to hear your thoughts on it! Please share in the comments below. #purpose #diyrockstar #prejippie #bloomingprejippie #coronavirus #quarantine #professional #musicianlifestyle #pseudonyms #artistic #deep #creative #diyrockstar If you like this, you might enjoy: • Musical Discoveries #3: http://bit.ly/ep71musdisc3vid • Coronavirus for the D.I.Y.  Gab & Jam Ep 126 Why Are Musical Artists Viewed Differently From Actors? Podcast | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:19:50

Ep 126 Why are musical artists viewed differently from actors? Video Description In terms of “authenticity,” there is a difference between the way we see a musical artist versus how we see an actor. We want to explore that in this episode. The areas covered in our discussion include: • What do we mean? • Why is this important? • What is the impact? • How do you feel? To hear the full discussion, be sure to check out the YouTube video or the podcast. #authenticity #authentic #diyrockstar #prejippie #bloomingprejippie #coronavirus #quarantine #professional #artists #creative #passion #musicianlifestyle #albums What do you think?  Gab & Jam Ep 124 How Do You Know When Music Is Good? Podcast | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:13:07

Gab & Jam Ep 124 How do you know when music is good? Video Description This episode picks up on a topic that was discussed last week on the Volume show (on Sirius radio). They were asking if art should be “difficult” in order for it to be legitimate. —When we say “difficult”, we mean in multiple senses of the word: sonically difficult (maybe dissonance, etc.), ideologically difficult (as in deep, introspective, or political), reactionary (against the sound and ideas of the majority of popular artists), or complicated (in structure, like jazz). Check out the discussion. #music #good #artistic #bloomingprejippie #prejippie #gabandjam To give a little context, they were discussing why each of them liked and/or disliked the new Fiona Apple album (“Fetch the Bolt Cutters”). And I must say that they did such a good job of piquing my interest in the record, that I made it a point to listen to the album before the week was over! I also took the opportunity to draft a quick and dirty review of the album (that’s available in the accompanying blog post on this topic; check for the link in the description). #difficultvsgood #diyrockstar #prejippie #bloomingprejippie #coronavirus #quarantine #goodmusic #musicianlifestyle #Volume #fionaapple What do you think? Does music have to be weird-sounding, deep, or political for it to be good? We would LOVE to hear your thoughts on this! Please share in the comments below.  Gab & Jam Ep 122 D.I.Y. Rock Star Rewind Quarantine Edition Grove Studios Livestream Interview | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:23:46

Gab & Jam Ep 122 D.I.Y. Rock Star Rewind Quarantine Edition Grove Studios Livestream Interview Video Description In this episode, we are going to share with you one of the partnerships that has blossomed during this Coronavirus quarantine period. The result of which was being a guest in our first livestream ever with Grice Studios in Ypsilanti, MI. (They run a rehearsal space, and now a podcast and livestream virtual coffee house, where they feature independent artists and share their creative processes). Here is just a little bit of the hour and a half long interview with Grove. (https://bit.ly/grovefullinterview ) That was a little of the interview that was live-streamed on April 5, 2020 (during the Coronavirus quarantine). Music videos featured in this interview: • Tell Me What You Want: https://bit.ly/tellmewhatyouwant2 • You’re My Hero: http://bit.ly/youremyheroprej • Something’s Wrong: http://bit.ly/somethingswrongvid Don’t forget that even while this craziness is going on, if you can, you should be working on developing your online network by just being genuinely curious about people and places that you might want to partner with. —We started with Grove by just interacting with Erich, Rick, and Max on their Facebook posts. Eventually, Erich invited us for a private tour (http://bit.ly/bbbgrovetourvid ), and before we knew it, they were asking us to talk to their community about our creative process and about how we built our social media platform to 21k+ followers. —So it didn’t take much. What we are saying is to find ways to empower yourselves and then go into action! That’s it and if you want to join with like-minded people on a similar path to you, join our Facebook group (http://bit.ly/diyrockstarjoin ). #purpose #diyrockstar #hope #prejippie #bloomingprejippie #coronavirus #quarantine #selfquarantine #musicianlifestyle #newreality #stateofemergency #socialdistancing #patience What have you decided to work on in spite of—or because of—this crisis?  Gab & Jam Ep 121 Coronavirus Evens The Playing Field For DIY Rock Stars Podcast | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:15:22

Gab & Jam Ep 121 Coronavirus Evens the Playing Field for DIY Rock Stars Video Description We’ve been fascinated by all the positive things people have been doing in the midst of this unprecedented crisis, including streaming workouts, streaming concerts, helping distribute food to those affected, restaurants giving away lunches to school children, sharing resources for how to spend time, sharing recipes, suggesting reading lists, etc. Celebrities and non-celebrities, alike, have been able to get our attention, right from their home to ours, during this unusual time of Coronavirus quarantine. We are ALL using D.I.Y. Rock Star methods of connecting directly with fans, which levels the playing field and provides the unexpected opportunity for us to make some progress in building our independently-based creative empires. And, while it is not our goal to preach at you, it is our goal to motivate you to do what you said you want to accomplish (which for many of us is to see some progress in building our vision). 5 Things you can do to start seeing progress in building your creative empire (even during this weird time): 1. Make a plan 2. Break that plan down into goals 3. Break goals into tasks that need to start/learn/do 4. Work on it EVERYDAY (especially now, since you may actually have time to do some things relating to it) 5. Track and celebrate every inch of progress We invite you to join Facebook group, Be the Next D.I.Y. Bloomingprejippie says:

In this "Musical '"Discoveries'" episode, we will be sharing 10 musical artists who are a little off-the-beaten path, but who have inspired us in some way or another.  Either we have recently "discovered" them by appreciating work that they have already done, or we, literally, have recently discovered that they exist at all. Either way, there is something about their art that we would like to share, so that more folks can appreciate them too.

We are Bruce Theory and Victoria Moon (in conjunction with Prejippie Music Group, Inc.). We created Blooming Prejippie Zine to document our journey to summon our muse. The goal is to consume inspiring artifacts, deliberate and celebrate them, then spew the lovechild created by our previous influences and this newer stimuli; even while navigating “regular” lives. Yes, because even rock stars need inspiration.

Come with us. Be bold and blossom.
