 Educated Peleoneras | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 3145

This episode of Tamarindo is full of #EducatedPeleonera vibes! Starting with some quality catching up with co-hosts Melinna and Brenda in our 'Que Pasa' segment (#thirsttrap: we talk #JanelleMonae). We engage in a rare "Explanatory Comma" moment (See NPR's Code Switch episode from 12/14/16) to catch y'all up on what exactly we mean when we say or hashtag 'Educated Peleonera'. We put a spotlight on some #EducatedPeleoneras who are fearlessly lifting their voices standing up for their communities and are making waves culturally and politically. We invoke the badassery of #NaomiWadler #EmmaGonzalez and #EdnaChavez some of the young women of color whose voices resounded around the world as they demanded an end to gun violence at #MarchforOurlives. As Latinas from #LosAngeles, we were especially touched by #SouthLA teen Edna Lisbeth Chavez who highlighted the need for the movement and media to focus on gun violence in communities of color, including #policeviolence and for resources in communities to address trauma and inequalities stemming from poverty and systemic racism. Next, we interview Afro-Latinx political commentator, community organizer, and independent journalist Rosa Clemente. Rosa joined actor Susan Sarandon at the 2018 Golden Globes to shed light on #TimesUp. We caught up with Rosa shortly after the #WeAllGrow Latina conference and learned more about #PRontheMap, a collaborative effort she founded that brings independent journalists together to document the untold stories of Puerto Rican people following the devastating hurricane Maria. A native of South Bronx, Rosa Clemente is one of the most raw, honest, political, social, and cultural voices in the country. Keep up with Rosa on twitter: @rosaclemente or on instagram @blackpuertoricanphd Finally, we wrap up with our signature segments: the Chancla, a flip flop that we energetically chuck at whatever ticked us off (from twitter trolls to toxic masculinity) and the ode to #Selena, the #BidiBidiBomBom (when your heart goes pitter patter in Spanish), where we balance it out by sharing something that's bringing us joy.  Part 2: #OscarsNotSoBrown: Filmmaking while Brown with Linda Yvette Chávez & Marvin Lemus | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1432

As we collectively process the impact of last night's #Oscars, we’re left pondering what progressed and what stayed the same when it comes to POC & Latinx representation on screen? We are happy to count the awards that went to Guillermo del Toro, Coco, and Jordan Peele as wins, but what about the fact that only 2.7% of film roles go to Latinxs? ([http://remezcla.com/lists/film/ucla-hollywood-diversity-report-2018/](http://remezcla.com/lists/film/ucla-hollywood-diversity-report-2018/)) Lets get INTO IT with two Latinx filmmakers working to change this dire statistic. This episode is part two of our interview with Linda Yvette Chávez and Marvin Lemus, the creators of the bilingual digital series GENTE-FIED (2017 Sundance Film Festival Selection, executive produced by America Ferrera & MACRO Ventures). If you haven’t yet, stop what you’re doing and immediately play part one of where we meet these award-winning writers, directors, and producers, who are passionate about telling nuanced #latinx stories and multi-dimensional, characters. On this episode, we talk about #intersectionality and dive further into race, ethnicity & gender in the film industry, and explore why #RepresentationMatters. We’re way over the lip service to #diversity and are here for some equity and inclusion! And yes, we cosign #FrancesMcDormand ’s suggestion of the #InclusionRider. Additionally, a group of Latinx industry professionals led by National Hispanic Media Coalition (NHMC), gathered Saturday 3/3, to demand greater roles for #Latinxs both behind the scenes here:[http://www.latinorebels.com/2018/03/04/nhmc-pre-oscars-protesters-demand-latinx-inclusion/](http://www.latinorebels.com/2018/03/04/nhmc-pre-oscars-protesters-demand-latinx-inclusion/) Follow Linda Yvette Chavez Instagram.com/lindayvettechavez twitter.com/lindayvette Follow Marvins Lemus www.elmarvinlemus.com Instagram.com/elmarvinlemus

 #43-(Part 1 of 2 )#OscarsNotSoBrown: Filmmaking while Brown with Linda Yvette Chávez & Marvin Lemus | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 2731

Its Oscar week 2018 and the hashtag #OscarsSoWhite is still painfully accurate, so the Tamarindo team decided to sit down with a pair of visionary #Latinx filmmakers who are breaking down barriers in Hollywood by putting Latinx stories and faces front and center. Marvin Lemus and Linda Yvette Chávez, the talented young creators behind the highly anticipated bilingual digital series GENTE-FIED (2017 Sundance Film Festival Selection, executive produced by America Ferrera & MACRO Ventures), join Melinna and Brenda to talk about their experiences as Latinxs in the industry, why representation and inclusion matter, challenging the status quo, and even their relationship to Instagram! The conversation was so rich that we couldn’t contain it to just one episode, so we decided to do a Tamarindo Podcast first- a two part episode! Part 1 focuses on their trajectories as filmmakers and Part two (dropping soon) will delve deeper into complex discussions around changing the status quo in Hollywood and making sure that #OscarsNotSoBrown becomes a thing of the past.  Guest Bios: Linda Yvette Chávez is an award-winning screenwriter, producer, director and a Xicana who loves to tell Latinx stories. Linda holds an MFA in screenwriting from USC’s School of Cinematic Arts, and a BA from Stanford University. She’s a Project Involve Alum and the recipient of the Hispanic Scholarship Fund’s McNamara Creative Arts grant. Her feature screenplay, Fieras, won USC Cinema’s prestigious Jack Nicholson Award for merit in writing and was selected for Film Independent’s selective Screenwriting Lab. Linda has written and produced for Univision, MiTu Network, Pepsi, and XO Group. Her work has received millions of views, featured everywhere from CNN to Good Morning America. Instagram.com/lindayvettechavez twitter.com/lindayvette Marvin Lemus is an award-winning screenwriter, director, and producer with a passion for telling nuanced Latinx stories. His work ranges between the film festival circuit and the digital world and has been featured on Funny or Die, Huffington Post, Gizmodo, Mitu, and Buzzfeed. Marvin was behind the wildly successful digital campaign for the feature film, DEAR WHITE PEOPLE, which received over 8 million views. Lemus directed the short film, VÁMONOS, as a Film Independent Project Involve participant, and went on to screen this project internationally in over 40 film festivals.  #42 - Buzzfeed's Curly Velasquez on Tamarindo | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 2611

This week on Tamarindo Podcast, Brenda and Melinna sit down with Buzzfeed’s Curly Velasquez, one of the lead content creators for their Latinx division, Pero Like. Carlitos “Curly” Velasquez, or "the funny primo we wish we all had”, is a Los Angeles-based artist who celebrates all things brown and beautiful. He began his career in fashion working for celebrity photographer David LaChapelle, and design icon Jeremy Scott before starting his own line. Curly began work with BuzzFeed as an office receptionist, and worked his way onto the Shorter Than Short Form team, creating original artwork and animations for Snapchat. His interest in producing eventually led him to the video side where he currently creates “content that resonates with English-speaking Latinxs” through Buzfeed’s Pero Like. Melinna & Brenda get into the personal and the political with Curly, discussing #TPS (Temporary Protected Status), life as a Salvadoreño Latinx in the US, the influence of social media and (very) personal grooming.
