Then we introduce you to our good friend, Rebecca Pleitez, Deputy Director of Grassroots advocacy for the California Primary Care Association, and mommy-in-chief of two, with one on the way.  Although Rebecca has only been a mom for a few years, her experience is unique in that she’s at times been an entrepreneur, military mom, traveling mom, stay at home mom you name it. As you’ll hear, Rebecca is one of the most authentic people we know so we invited her to keep it real with you'all about #momlife. A lifelong advocate, Rebecca has been involved in #healthpolicy work and local government, most recently supporting California Assemblywoman Carrillo’s entry into office. We talk to Rebecca about ways we can all be advocates for moms and mujeres everywhere on this special #DiadelasMadres episode! Don’t forget to share this episode with a friend! Through ideas on how to create positive habits, the power of accountability, and some personal healthy eating #tips, we set the stage for a fun conversation where we hope you’ll learn something too! We’re including some of the stats and resources we shared on the episode below. On this episode of Tamarindo, our very own wellbeing-enthusiast Ana Sheila kicks off our new segment on personal challenges or #retos that push us to take note of our habits, identify what's harming vs. helping, and helps us live more intentionally. Next, we delve into a discussion on #identity as we reflect on "I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter" the young adult novel by Erika L. Sanchez. Our chat is light on spoilers, so even if you haven't read this story of a #FirstGen Mexican teen named Julia who is grappling with the recent death of her older sister Olga, you'll connect with the themes we discuss. We reflect on labels like #Chicano, #Latina, #Latinx and other terms that we have connected to at different points in our lives. We know #MEChA has [made the news](https://apnews.com/95617a47dde44c0c964b07672f23e9e1) recently and both of us talk a bit about our days as part of MEChA in high school and college.  Meet Raúl Castillo: A Chicano Leading Man. | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 2466

Whether it was as the charming Richie on HBO’s acclaimed series Looking or on an off Broadway stage acting with Emmy nominee Sandra Oh, we know the moment you witnessed Raúl Castillo’s tremendous talent, you knew he was the type of leading man you’d always wanted, and the type of leading man Hollywood has been missing. Raúl, a multifaceted stage & screen actor who honed his craft in New York City, hails from McAllen, Texas and is the proud son of Mexican parents from Tamaulipas. We sat down with Raúl to talk about recent projects like the 2018 Sundance hit We The Animals (in theaters now), a future arc on Starz’s VIDA, and upcoming indie film El Chicano, where he stars as the lead in this new Latino superhero feature! With only about 3% of film roles going to Latinxs (USC), Castillo’s presence on screen is necessary and all the more rewarding to witness.  What in the Actual Hell: US Immigration in 2018 with journalist Tina Vasquez | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 2401

Despite being on a short recording hiatus in between seasons, Tamarindo Podcast was compelled to produce a special episode in light of the devastating recent developments in US immigration policy. On this episode, Melinna interviews Tina Vasquez, senior reporter covering immigration at Rewire.News, in order to begin unpacking some of the most horrific results of a failed US immigration system that has only been exacerbated by the Trump administration. Vasquez is an award-winning writer focusing on intersectional feminism, racial justice, and immigration. Vasquez not only discusses family separation and the indefinite detention of “tender age” migrant children in 2018, but places these atrocities in historical context by reviewing this country’s stained past of dehumanizing communities of color from enslaved people to indigenous people and various immigrant groups. She also reviews how previous administrations laid the groundwork for the present situation as we dive into one of her recent works: The US has a Long History of Helping to “Disappear” Central Americans. FYI the interview with Tina is over the phone bc she is based in the East Coast, so listen carefully because her analysis is urgent and insightful. Since the Educated Peleonera’s love to provide both critical and comedic interventions, we start this episode with our classic Chanclazo segment while also catching you up on some recent Tamarindo appearances, like Wellesley College, #LALIFF, Brenda on the hit #CrookedMedia podcast Lovett or Leave It (that led to Melinna’s upcoming appearance on #ThrowingShade pod) and tell you why it’s important to support #VIDAstarz. Though we recorded this episode before Mexico was eliminated in the #WorldCup (#ElTri Por Vida), we still believe in #Chicharito’s challenge: #ImaginémonosCosasChingonas! Nothing embodies these vibes to us more lately than the primary win of #EducatedPeleonera Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a Bronx born Boricua who unseated a 10 term incumbent (and heir apparent to Pelosi as next speaker of the house) with 57.5% of the vote in New York’s District 14\. We celebrate the 28 year old Democratic Socialist with a platform that includes calls to #AbolishICE, #MedicareForAll, and fully funded public schools and universities.  MOTA-vation: POC, Marijuana, and Makin' Money Moves | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 2251

Whether you smoke it, bake it, or hate it, Marijuana is here to stay and with more states going the way of Colorado and California, the Cannabis industry is ripe with opportunity… but exactly is who stands to benefit from this booming business that is estimated to generate $40 billion in economic output by 2021?** Women? People of Color? LGBTQ Folks? White Men? Tune in as we talk POT and POWER on this week’s episode! Joining us are two of the founders from The Peoples Dispensary- Christine de La Rosa and Chaney Turner. THE PEOPLES DISPENSARY is an Oakland based social enterprise and dispensary which uses its business model to push for racial equity within the cannabis industry. Cofounded by Chaney Turner, Charleen Caabay, Christine De La Rosa and Michael Schlieker, - The Peoples Dispensary is a company committed to uplifting communities by creating equity in the Cannabis industry. We got to talk to Christine and Chaney to learn about how they’re revolutionizing existing dispensary models with their equity framework and bringing opportunities for generational wealth to people of color.  Just last week, as the #420 hashtag was trending on April 20th (the now universally accepted celebration for lighting up), some used the moment to shed light on the ways that communities of color continue to be criminalized for doing what many white businesspeople are now being celebrated for. Despite the growing social acceptability of marijuana use and the boom in the dispensary business, there’s a clear lack of equity when it comes to people of color and pot. Black and Brown folks are disproportionally incarcerated for minor marijuana offenses and often times, these offenses can even be a barrier to getting citizenship. Get the 411 from these badass Bay Area women and learn how you might be able to get a piece of the magic pie…or brownie! Finally, we all took a moment to gush over her royal HIGH-ness- Queen Bey and her FIRE performance at #BEYchella (formerly known as #COACHELLA)! LIGHT UP AND LISTEN.
