#42 - Buzzfeed's Curly Velasquez on Tamarindo

Tamarindo Podcast show

Summary: This week on Tamarindo Podcast, Brenda and Melinna sit down with Buzzfeed’s Curly Velasquez, one of the lead content creators for their Latinx division, Pero Like. Carlitos “Curly” Velasquez, or "the funny primo we wish we all had”, is a Los Angeles-based artist who celebrates all things brown and beautiful. He began his career in fashion working for celebrity photographer David LaChapelle, and design icon Jeremy Scott before starting his own line. Curly began work with BuzzFeed as an office receptionist, and worked his way onto the Shorter Than Short Form team, creating original artwork and animations for Snapchat. His interest in producing eventually led him to the video side where he currently creates “content that resonates with English-speaking Latinxs” through Buzfeed’s Pero Like. Melinna & Brenda get into the personal and the political with Curly, discussing #TPS (Temporary Protected Status), life as a Salvadoreño Latinx in the US, the influence of social media and (very) personal grooming. Curly will be appearing at this years #SXSW festival on a panel titled “Latinx Representation, Resistance and Identity.” Follow Curly on: YouTube https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCtg9xRpVZGWVchp83AOLADg Buzzfeed buzzed.com/curlyvelasquez #Instagram @thecurlyvshow Videos we mention on the show: "My Abuelas Immigration Story from el Salvador to the US" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O-J0yi5WYSk "Iconic Looks & Facts About Frida" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=98Yl3TIglO4&t=218s Keep up with Tamarindo podcast at www.tamarindopodcast.com #CurlyVelasquez #PeroLike #Buzzfeed #SalvadorianAmerican #Salvadorian #Latinx #LGBTQIA #TPS #Salvadoran #ElSalvador
