What I found amazing is that he slices his banding loaves at his bandsaw while moving the fence with each slice – after cutting thousands of yards of inlay, he has an eye for minute measurements. Along the way, he crossed over to furniture, too. He’s developed a great understanding of the transition of upholstery, and is quick to point out traditional work versus what has come about since the end of World War II, which is the transition point for automobile upholstery. Surprisingly, the mass exodus from coil springs to zig zag  springs in furniture didn’t happen for another decade or so. In the basement of his apartment building, he has a couple of rooms that house his gigantic lathe and his collection of turnings, some completed and some waiting for finish. His introduction to woodworking came after a chance encounter with a woodworker who occupied the same rooms back in the 80s. Boley was recovering from surgery and needed a new hobby with tennis no longer on his activities list. It wasn’t long before Boley was turning and turning large.
