 Shiplap or Half-Lap joints – 360w360 E.215 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 11:35

In this episode of 360 with 360WoodWorking the 360 guys discuss whether shiplap or half-lap joints are used for backboards. Join the guys twice each week for six lively minutes of discussion on everything from tools to techniques to wood selection (and more). Chuck & Glen, and sometimes a surprise guest, all have their own opinions. Sometimes they agree and sometimes they don’t, but the conversation is always information packed and lots of fun. If you have topics you’d like to hear covered in future episodes, click here to send an email to the guys. Shiplap or Half-Lap Joints Sometimes woodworking terms can be confusing, like shiplap and half-lap joints. In both cases 50% of the material is removed from each of the two adjoining pieces. Naturally, you might think the terms are interchangeable, but they’re not. A half-lap joint connects two pieces of wood together usually at some sort of angle (often 90°), while a shiplap joint joins the boards edge to edge. This might seem like a minor difference, but it’s as different as night and day. If you haven’t joined 360WoodWorking already, click here to get even more great woodworking information.  Grain Orientation – 360w360 E.213 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 8:34

In this episode of 360 with 360WoodWorking the 360 guys discuss grain orientation in regards to joinery. Grain Orientation A fairly common theme to the questions the guys get concerns grain orientation as applied to joinery. Woodworkers often have trouble visualizing how and why they should join pieces of wood. Dovetails are probably the most difficult joint for woodworkers to comprehend why the grain direction has to run a specific way. The joint itself has some mechanical hold, which is why we see woodworkers incorrectly joining the end of a board to the side. It’s an easy mistake to make, but one that could cost you the entire project when the joint fails. If you haven’t joined already, click here to get even more great woodworking information.
