In both cases 50% of the material is removed from each of the two adjoining pieces. Naturally, you might think the terms are interchangeable, but they’re not. A half-lap joint connects two pieces of wood together usually at some sort of angle (often 90°), while a shiplap joint joins the boards edge to edge.
