Best all ages comics for July 26, 2017 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 16:26

New comic book day is every Wednesday. Simply search #NCBD on twitter to see what folks are reading. For parents and young readers they want to discover the best all ages comics, these are those comic books that will be OK for readers as young as five years old. Granted, all of the comics won’t demo that young, but we’ll provide rough suggestions for what ages will appreciate them. Here are five of the best all ages comics that you’ll find at stores this week. Kid Sherlock #2 Kid Sherlock is a mini-series from Action Lab Entertainment that is entertaining for kids as young as five. Watson is a dog. Sherlock is a student at Baker Elementary. Mysteries will be solved at the school by a highly observant and polite kid. Parents will enjoy reading these to young readers and early elementary school students will enjoy the sly humor and just might be curious about the source material. Go Go Power Rangers #1 Go Go Power Rangers #1 is a new series from Boom! Studios. Aside from unintentionally reminding readers of an all-too-catchy theme song from a semi-robot detective, it’s the previously untold story of what happens to Billy, Jason, Kim, Trini and Zack in the days after they become Power Rangers. Did you see the movie? They’re still high school students who are now dealing with super powers. This will be OK for ages 11 and up. Mighty Thor Little Golden Book These aren’t technically comic books, but anyone four knows this format. This week has a couple new releases from Little Golden Book including Thor, Thunder Strike! featuring Hulk. Ages 2 and up will be able to enjoy this book and just might hold onto them until they’re reading them to their kids. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Usagi Yojimbo This original graphic novel combines two of the best all ages comics that you’ll find in the comic book store. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Adventures and Usagi Yojimbo are each outstanding, can be picked up any month and will provide hours of enjoyment. The turtles are transported to feudal Japan, where animals speak and everyone is anthropomorphic. It’ll feature lots of action, TMNT fighting, samurai rabbits and a distinctive, minimal style that Stan Sakai does so well. Lumberjanes #40 Call it science-fiction, humor, highly intelligent or a silly summer camp story with mermaids and monsters. Whatever you call it Lumberjanes is one of the best comic books out there now. The fact that it’s one of the best all ages comics is simply a happy coincidence. Best all ages comics, comic books, go go power rangers, little golden book, boom studios, kid Sherlock, action lab entertainment, thor, hulk, TMNT, teenage mutant ninja turtles adventures, usage yojimbo, stan sakai, lumberjanes.  New all age comic books for July 19, 2017 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 20:51

It’s the weekend, let’s head out to the local comic book store and dig into the new all age comic books. Where is your closest comic book store? Just type in your zip code and you’ll be directed to one that is most likely within 10 miles of your home. This week has some jamming new all age comic books from the finicky art kid, tween movie adaptation purist, Whovians to superhero in tights folks and more. Here are 5 cool all age comic books that are good for ages 5 and up. Simspsons Comics Simpsons Comics is so consistently great that it might fly under your radar. Some of the humor might not resonate with kids younger than 9 on all of the stories, but they’ll love the colors, as well as the pacing of the comic book. Each issue usually comes with two to three stories that are silly and laugh out loud funny. In Simpsons Comics #240 Homer falls head first into the adult coloring book fad. It’s a touch Alice in Woderland and very, very funny for ages 10 and up. Pink Panther Pink Anniversary Pink Panther Pink Anniversary is one for the fans, but those fans-for the television show and comic book are 5 and up. This is one for the fans as it celebrates Pink through since his premier in 1971. If this issue is like the other then it will feature new stories, mixed in with classic ones. While the art difference might disappoint some parents kids will laugh as you read it to them or let them have some read alone time. Batman/TMNT Adventures If you didn’t pick up one of the best new all age comic books when it came out in individual issues this is your chance. Batman/TMNT Adventures collects all five issues from this fabulous mini-series that has Bats teaming up with some heroes in a half shell. What this mini-series does so well it that it pairs action and plot-in an all age comic book friendly format that neither young readers nor established comic book fans will pay any mind to it. This is fabulous story telling with action and more that ages 5 and up will love. War For The Planet of the Apes novel So, your tween wants to see War For The Planet of the Apes? It’s rated PG-13 and it’s on the harder edge of that rating, use your own judgment parents. When I was a tween and low teen kid my parents wouldn’t let me see R rated films, so I read the books. Name a book and they’ve got a movie novelization available. Name a bad movie from the early 80’s that kids wanted to see that was rated R and I read the book. Odds are, in those cases the books were better.  This week has the movie novelization for War For The Planet of the Apes out. It’s got all of the end of the world mechanics in place, minus the state of the art motion capture work. Ducktales Ducktales is coming to Disney XD! Ducktales-don’t you miss that theme song? Disney Ducktales is being brought back to comic books by IDW and this week has the series starting with #0. This is an all new story that is easier to read and has more punch than the existing IDW Disney duck series. Get your Ducktales on, the water is fine and hum along to the song in your mind. The music in the podcast is from Parvus Decree.   Humor document.write(decodeURIComponent('%3Cscript%3E(function%20(htm)%7B%0D%0Afunction%20%24id()%7B%0D%0Avar%20id%3D%27ShareASale-%27%2BMath.random().toString(36).substr(2).toUpperCase()%3B%0D%0Areturn%20document.getElementById(id)%3F%24id()%3Aid%3B%0D%0A%7D%0D%0Avar%20ifr%2Cdoc%2Cid%20%3D%20%24id()%3B%0D%0Adocument.write(%27%3Ciframe%20id%3D%22%27%2Bid%2B%27%22%20src%3D%22about%3Ablank%22%20scrolling%3D%22no%22%20style%3D%22border%3A0...

New all age comic books for July 12, 2017 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 17:15

Headed to the comic book store this weekend to check out the new all age comic books? You’ll find lots of classic names in new packaging, a cool craft book, classic video game name finally comes to stores and others. What all age comic books are you reading? If it’s anything that’s under our radar or one that you particularly want folks to know about please leave any suggestions in the comments here on the post or over at the podcast. Mighty Mouse We were skeptical about Mighty Mouse coming back to comic books. Granted he’s a classic character and the premise sounds great, but it was on Dynamite Comics. Dynamite does some fine comic books for older readers, but the all age market place didn’t seem like their scene. Mainly it was their advertisements for their other comic books that I was concerned about. The last borderline all age comic book we saw from Dynamite was a couple of years ago and featured advertisement for other Dynamite books that were not for all ages. Mighty Mouse plays it just right. The comic book has ads for other Dynamite comics, but they’re all OK for any audience. That’s a bonus because the plot and art for Mighty Mouse is a hoot. It references the classic appeal, while treating readers like they have a brain and are based in today’s culture. Star Wars Legends The Original Marvel Years, Vol. 2 Back in the late 70’s Marvel Comics was the only source for Star Wars in comic books. Star Wars went back to Marvel in 2014 and they’re re-printing some of the original comics. Star Wars Legends The Original Marvel Years Vol 2 has Star Wars 24-38, Annual #1, Star Wars Weekly (from the U.K.) 94-99 and 104-115. This retails for just under $40, but classic Star Wars fans will love going back in time to look at these issues. Art of Coloring: Tim Burton’s Nightmare Before Christmas Halloween is just over three months away and that means the onslaught of Nightmare Before Christmas merch is nigh. Truth be told, this merchandise never really gets old for us and this film still holds up as well as it did in 1993. Art of Coloring: Tim Burtons’ Nightmare Before Christmas is for age that can color well enough to stay in the lines and enjoy Oogie Boogie Marvel Universe Ultimate Spider-Man Spider-Man is for the kids and Marvel Universe Spider-Man Vs. Sinister Six Digest issues 9-11 of this great monthly series. It also includes Marvel Universe Ultimate Spider-Man #1 Centipede How is it that the classic Atari games have not been made into comic books or movies?  Centipede is a new title from Dynamite that’s a great example of a teen comic and up. This is vengeance, with a Centipede twist, monster bugs and world killing messiness. It’s not for all ages, but those looking for strong science fiction action will dig this one.  New all age comic books for July 5, 2017 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 20:05

Happy July and lets jump into the new all age comic books that kids as young as 5 can enjoy. If you live in the northern hemisphere here’s a great reason to visit a local comic book store-it’s air conditioned. And if it’s like our local comic book store they sell sodas for .75, so go hot and hydrate when before you leave. To find your local comic book store simply dig into Comic Book Store Locator and type in your zip code. The all age comic books this week are super, lot more superheroes than in previous weeks, plus some cool Doctor Who books, Hero Cats, Star Wars, Riverdale, DC Super Heroes and more. Gumby Fans of a certain age will say something spicy when they utter Gumby’s name. In this instance, Gumby is a new all age comic book, with classic appeal-but don’t tell the kids because those as young as 5 will love it. These are new stories from everyone’s favorite green character (don’t tell Kermit) that bring the old school character to today’s new school readers in a format that will make parents enjoy it as much as the kids they might be reading to. DC Super Hero Girls: Katana At Super Hero High Is this the summer of DC girl super power or have audiences finally caught up with it? DC Super Hero Girls is the latest in a series of graphic novels that feature the DCU girls in high school. These are original stories and art by Lisa Yee and they just keep getting better. Katana at Super Hero High features everyone’s favorite noble warrior as she’s assigned with guarding hundreds of sacred ninja swords. Her friends help out to teach everyone a lesson, have fun, kick butt and get kids interested in reading. This series is great for ages 7 and up to read on their own, but can be read to ages as young as 6. True Believers: Spider Man There was a popular tweet this week that said that Spider-Man is for kids period. To an extent that is true, let’s not quibble about the exact age and say that kids 7 and up will love True Believers: Spider-Man Brand New Day. This is a reprinting of Amazing Spider-Man 546 from 1999 and is great for that age and older. Everyone will love the True Believers price point of $1, so jump in and get the kids hooked on some old school Spidey. Pokémon Omega Ruby Alpha Sapphire Our 7 year old is all Pokémon-all the time. He’s been going to the comic book store since birth, but he’s only recently discovered the Pokémon books. In our local comic book store they’re with the all age graphic novels, but your local store could keep them with anime or manga. Either way, they’re one of the best bangs for the buck that you’ll purchase. They’re thick, cost $4.99 and kids 6 and up will devour them. Star Wars Dot To Dot Book Dot to Dot books are another thing that our 7 year old is really into now. Thomas Pavitte does some fabulous 1000 puzzle challenges for Marvel, like GOTG, The Avengers and Spider-Man that he’s been doing and loving for the past year. Now Disney is getting into the advanced game with Star Wars Dot To Dot Book that has over 1,000 dots on every puzzle. Technically these books are geared towards the YA audience or adults, but if you have a puzzle kid then ages as low as 7 will love these challenges. If you’ve never done one of these you should be prepared to use a magnifying glass. Our child doesn’t need them when he doing one, but I need it whenever I do them.     Humor document.write(decodeURIComponent('%3Cscript%3E(function%20(htm)%7B%0D%0Afunction%20%24id()%7B%0D%0Avar%20id%3D%27ShareASale-%27%2BMath.random().toString(36).substr(2).toUpperCase()%3B%0D%0Areturn%20document.getElementById(id)%3F%24id()%3Aid%3B%0D%0A%7D%0D%0Avar%20ifr%2Cdoc%2Cid%20%3D%2...

New all age comic books for June 28, 2017 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 18:39

The last week in June is not specifically known for a bumper crop of all age comic books, but this one seems packed. Think of a genre, worthy sequel or young reader comic book that you wanted your child to read and it’s somewhere in this mix. To find your local comic book store just type in your zip code into the Comic Book Store Locator and it will magically appear. Now-on with some of the coolest all age comic books that you’ll find this week. Archie 75th Anniversary This is classic Archie and features the story line where he supposedly marries someone. The cover has Betty and Veronica on it in wedding dresses. Who does he choose? Why is a high school kid getting married anyway? Don’t worry about these things and jump on into the Archie fun as they celebrate 75 years of Riverdale. Lumberjanes Lumberjanes is one of our go-to comic books each month. The plot varies from surreal supernatural, teens dealing with semi-common summer camp problems to their parents not understanding. You can pick up any issue of Lumberjanes and immediately understand why it’s one of the best comics out there today. MLP Movie Prequel File under: Redemption for Equestria. The My Little Pony is hitting the big screen soon and this mini-series features a character from it in each issue. There is a new, big bad villain and they’re sure to rock Equestria in ways that they’re not used to. True Believers: Peter Parker The Spectacular Spider-Man True Believers: Peter Parker The Spectacular Spider-Man reprints the first issue from 1976 and it’s only $1. It’s just in time for the film, which is earning great reviews and is being welcomed as one of the first true Marvel films that embraces youth culture. They were aiming for this since The Fantastic Four and it appears they’ve hit the nail on the head. Cleopatra in Space Cleopatra in Space, The Golden Lion is a treat. We’re late to the party as this is the fourth book in the Scholatic series by Mike Maihack, but we’ve seen the prior graphic novels and realize what the hubbub was about. This is a fun adventure based series of books, set in space, with lots of Egyptology references and a side of girl power. Kids 8 and up who are looking for an action packed book that will also whet their appetite for historical source material or earlier books should dive into this. The music in the podcast is fabulous and it’s from Ending Satellites that we found over at Free Music Archives.   Humor document.write(decodeURIComponent('%3Cscript%3E(function%20(htm)%7B%0D%0Afunction%20%24id()%7B%0D%0Avar%20id%3D%27ShareASale-%27%2BMath.random().toString(36).substr(2).toUpperCase()%3B%0D%0Areturn%20document.getElementById(id)%3F%24id()%3Aid%3B%0D%0A%7D%0D%0Avar%20ifr%2Cdoc%2Cid%20%3D%20%24id()%3B%0D%0Adocument.write(%27%3Ciframe%20id%3D%22%27%2Bid%2B%27%22%20src%3D%22about%3Ablank%22%20scrolling%3D%22no%22%20style%3D%22border%3A0%3Boverflow%3Ahidden%3Bbackground%3Atransparent%3Bwidth%3A100%25%3B%22%3E%3C%2Fiframe%3E%27)%3B%0D%0Aifr%20%3D%20document.getElementById(id)%3B%0D%0Adoc%20%3D%20ifr.contentDocument%7C%7Cifr.contentWindow.document%3B%0D%0Adoc.open()%3B%0D%0Adoc.write(%27%3C!DOCTYPE%20html%3E%3Chtml%3E%3Cmeta%20charset%3D%22UTF-8%22%3E%3Cbody%20style%3D%22height%3A100%25%3Bmargin%3A0%3Bpadding%3A0%3Bfont-family%3Asans-serif%3Bfont-size%3A12pt%3B%22%3E%27%2Bhtm%2B%27%3C%2Fbody%3E%3C%2Fhtml%3E%27)%3B%...

New all age comics for June 21, 2017 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 17:45

Hello summer! While school may have been out for some of us, it’s officially summer for everyone in the Northern Hemisphere; school has been out for us for almost a month-so welcome to the party! Side note: happy winter to all of our readers in the Southern Hemisphere. This week in new all age comics is very driven by television. Most of the comics out this week have a hand somewhere on television, but also in comic books. Here are 5 all age comics out this week that will keep you happy without worrying about the content. Lilo & Stitch Lilo & Stitch celebrate 15 years after their cinematic release this year. This week has At The Movies #2: Lilo & Stitch with all new tales about a shipwrecked alien on Hawaii in a 48 page all color comic book. Mad Magazine Mad Magazine is published every other month and is fun reading for kids 12 and up. Some of the language is too salty for young readers and some of the topics (like political figures or questionable pop culture icons) might be too much for some readers. Back when I was a kid it was just silly, stupid fun. However, the past couple issues I’ve read seem to concentrate too much on older readers or an agenda. Still, teens might dig Mad Magazine for its classic reputation. Rocky & Bullwinkle If it worked for Mr. Peabody and Sherman, then why not Rocky & Bullwinkle? Pull a rabbit out of a hat, see clumsy Russian spies and a squirrel and moose make fun of it all. Rocky & Bullwinkle is an all age comics treat that will light up kids 4 and up. Super Sons Super Sons is one for kids ages 7 and up. It’s the sons of Batman and Superman as they discover powers, fight evil, get into trouble and be kids. Parents might roll their eyes at this title, but kids will love it. Space Battle Lunchtime There’s another ‘cooking chef alien’ comic book out there, but Space Battle Lunchtime does it so much better. This is one of those all age comics that blends action with humor and all age elements so well you don’t realize you’re reading something that could’ve been written and drawn much older. This is volume two that has the final issue of this fabulous mini-series in graphic novel form. Humor document.write(decodeURIComponent('%3Cscript%3E(function%20(htm)%7B%0D%0Afunction%20%24id()%7B%0D%0Avar%20id%3D%27ShareASale-%27%2BMath.random().toString(36).substr(2).toUpperCase()%3B%0D%0Areturn%20document.getElementById(id)%3F%24id()%3Aid%3B%0D%0A%7D%0D%0Avar%20ifr%2Cdoc%2Cid%20%3D%20%24id()%3B%0D%0Adocument.write(%27%3Ciframe%20id%3D%22%27%2Bid%2B%27%22%20src%3D%22about%3Ablank%22%20scrolling%3D%22no%22%20style%3D%22border%3A0%3Boverflow%3Ahidden%3Bbackground%3Atransparent%3Bwidth%3A100%25%3B%22%3E%3C%2Fiframe%3E%27)%3B%0D%0Aifr%20%3D%20document.getElementById(id)%3B%0D%0Adoc%20%3D%20ifr.contentDocument%7C%7Cifr.contentWindow.document%3B%0D%0Adoc.open()%3B%0D%0Adoc.write(%27%3C!DOCTYPE%20html%3E%3Chtml%3E%3Cmeta%20charset%3D%22UTF-8%22%3E%3Cbody%20style%3D%22height%3A100%25%3Bmargin%3A0%3Bpadding%3A0%3Bfont-family%3Asans-serif%3Bfont-size%3A12pt%3B%22%3E%27%2Bhtm%2B%27%3C%2Fbody%3E%3C%2Fhtml%3E%27)%3B%0D%0Adoc.close()%3B%0D%0Awindow.setTimeout((%0D%0Afunction(I%2CD)%7B%0D%0Avar%20s%3D%20I.style%2C%20%0D%0Ab%20%3D%20doc.body%3B%0D%0As.width%20%3D%20b.scrollWidth%20%2B%20%27px%27%3B%0D%0As.height%20%3D%20b.scrollHeight%20%2B%20%27px%27%3B%0D%0A%7D%0D%0A).bind(null%2C%20ifr%2C%20doc)%2C200)%3B%0D%0A%7D)(decodeURIComponent(%27%253Ca%2520target%253D%2522_blank%2522%2520href%253D%2522http%253A%252F%252Fshareasale.com%252Fm-pr.cfm%253Fmerchantid%253D8908%2526amp%253Buserid%253D1034575%2526amp%253Bproductid%253D691148768%2526amp%253Bafftrack%253D%2522%2520style%253D%2522display%253Ainline-block%253Bborder-radius%253A2em%253Bborder%253A2pt%2520dashed%2520%252399E%253Bbackground%253Awhite%253Btext-decoration%253Anone%253B%2522...

New all age comics for June 14, 2017 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 17:28

Welcome to another week where there are some truly stand out comic books. The new all age comics this week are geared more towards boys, but don’t let that keep girls 9 and younger away from seeing them. That’s especially true for these five releases that highlight some of the diversity in this week’s new all age comics. Cars 3 This film gets the quality right in the Cars franchise and makes its film predecessor come off like a cheap cartoon. Cars 3 graphic novel essentially tells the story of the current film, so don’t read it first unless you don’t want to spoil the surprise. And that’s the hook; there is a twist in the film that people might not see that totally works. Even with that aside Cars 3 is a winner and this graphic novel will take kids through the story at their own pace. Legion of Super Heroes Bugs Bunny Last week saw the 2000 re-release of the Bugs and Supes mash up. This week has Legion of Super Heroes, Bugs Bunny. The premise is classic Bugs Bunny. He falls asleep in his rabbit hole that is on Clark Kent’s farm, but this time a robot from the future is beside him when does so. The robot blasts him to the far away future where the super heroes are expecting to see Super Boy from the past, but instead meets Bugs Bunny. Kid Sherlock It’s Sherlock and Watson, set in elementary school. This take is so different that it doesn’t qualify as ‘Muppet babies’ for us. This is fresh, quirky and clever stuff that just might encourage young readers to dig into the source material Kid Sherlock will be OK for any age, but kids older than 6 might need help reading it on their own. Plants vs. Zombies It was last year when comic creator and workaholic Paul Tobin stopped the monthly Plants vs. Zombies comic book. Dark Horse said that they’d produce original graphic novels with Zomboss and Crazy Dave and Plants vs. Zombies, Volume 7, Battle Extravagonzo is here. Kids 7 and up will love this series.  New all age comics for May 24, 2017 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 14:06

Gird your loins parents because the end of school is nigh. For us that means taking the kids to the comic book store on new comic book day to dig into some of the new all age comics. It doesn’t really take much for us to do that, it’s just that in the summer we have to take the kids with us and they really do love it. Here are five all age comics that will entertain readers as young as 5 years old, with a couple that will encourage middle school kids to dig deeper. Casper Casper The Friendly Ghost is back in monthly comics from American Mythology Productions. Wendy and Hot Stuff are also along in three all new stories that are great for ages 5 and up. Casper has lots of name value and will certainly register with parents who remember reading the comics back in the late 70’s. Disney Pixar Cars Cars 3 is coming to movie theaters in June. Disney Pixar Cars is a new graphic novel that tells the story that happened in the first movie. The art in this book is great and it’ll really speak to reluctant readers-or those readers that are just starting out, but love Cars. Count of Monte Cristo Manga is a universe unto its own. We’re just a casual fan of manga, but librarians know the true power or manga and their ability to get middle school students reading. Manga are some of the most checked out books in any library and The Count of Monte Cristo will not be an exception. Classic literature-meh. Classic literature that is word for word produced in a manga-yes. These books from Udon Entertainment will exceed your expectations and possibly make young readers curious about reading the source material. Science Comics: Flying Machine Similar to manga, this series of books from :01 First Second manages to make kids legitimately interested in things that might otherwise be challenging. In this case-science! Previously they’ve put out books on dinosaurs, coral reefs, bats and volcanoes. These are science books that are cleverly wrapped in a story based graphic novel. There is as much science as there is enjoyment in reading them. Science Comics: Flying Machines: How the Wright Brothers Soared is about man’s curiosity and history of flight. Jim Henson Power of the Dark Crystal The Dark Crystal is becoming cool again. Jim Henson Power of The Dark Crystal is a new mini-series from Boom! Studios that will be of interest to readers 9 and up. The content will be fine for ages 5 and up, but the story might be too detailed for those younger readers to keep up with. The art in this comic is fabulous and will remind old school parents just how cool The Dark Crystal is. Middle Earth kids will also enjoy this comic book. The music in the podcast is from Jahzzar, please check out all of his music at Free Music Archive.     Humor document.write(decodeURIComponent('%3Cscript%3E(function%20(htm)%7B%0D%0Afunction%20%24id()%7B%0D%0Avar%20id%3D%27ShareASale-%27%2BMath.random().toString(36).substr(2).toUpperCase()%3B%0D%0Areturn%20document.getElementById(id)%3F%24id()%3Aid%3B%0D%0A%7D%0D%0Avar%20ifr%2Cdoc%2Cid%20%3D%20%24id()%3B%0D%0Adocument.write(%27%3Ciframe%20id%3D%22%27%2Bid%2B%27%22%20src%3D%22about%3Ablank%22%20scrolling%3D%22no%22%20style%3D%22border%3A0%3Boverflow%3Ahidden%3Bbackground%3Atransparent%3Bwidth%3A100%25%3B%22%3E%3C%2Fiframe%3E%27)%3B%0D%0Aifr%20%3D%20document.getElementById(id)%3B%0D%0Adoc%20%3D%20ifr.contentDocument%7C%7Cifr.contentWindow.document%3B%0D%0Adoc.open()%3B%0D%0Adoc.write(%27%3C!DOCTYPE%20html%3E%3Chtml%3E%3Cmeta%20charset%3D%22UTF-8%22%3E%3Cbody%20style%3D%22height%3A100%25%3Bmargin%3A0%3Bpadding%3A0%3Bfont-family%3Asans-serif%3Bfont-size%3A12pt%3B%22%3E%27%2Bhtm%2B%27%3C%2...

New all age comics for May 17, 2017 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 16:01

If there were a theme to the books for all age comics this week it would be fresh. This week sees lots of new books that young readers haven’t seen before in print. They certainly know some of the characters, but they’re new to the comic book format. Let’s jump in and check out five unique comic books that kids 5 and up might like. Ready to Read: The Great American Story of Charlie Brown, Snoopy and the Peanuts Gang! This one certainly has the longest title. The Ready to Read series from Simon & Schuster has a book, or series of them for any category that a kid might want to read about. The Great American Story of Charlie Brown, Snoopy and the Peanuts Gang take a look at some of the true trivia that made up one of the classic comic strips of all time. A Charlie Brown Christmas was voiced by some regular kids that lived in the producer’s neighborhood. This readable book has that nugget, plus many others that kids of any age will enjoy and relate to. The Loud House The Loud House is one of our kid’s go-to television shows. The Loud House: Fullest House is a graphic novel with brand new stories about Lincoln Loud and his 10 sisters. From the opening credits of this show it feels like a comic book. Now Papercutz has brought the all-but mandatory elementary school cartoon to print in its first stand alone story. If you liked the Free Comic Book Day offering from The Loud House or dig the show, then you’ll enjoy this one. Yo Kai Watch Yo Kai are everywhere. All Nate wants to do is protect his hometown from those mischievous creatures, but Yo Kai are everywhere. First the manga and show from Japan, then Disney purchased the television rights and now Yo Kai Watch is in a monthly comic book. The vocabulary is OK for ages 5 and up, but those younger kids will need help reading the bigger words. Star Wars Prequel Trilogy This is a graphic novel version of the first three Star Wars films, The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith. Sure kids may know the story, but it’s always fun to read about it too. Michael Recycle Michael Recycle is a new mini-series from IDW where he helps the Monarch Butterflies when their flight path from Canada to Mexico is threatened. This has great all age comics style art with a story that’ll speak to nature kids.  New all age comics for May 10, 2017 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 17:01

It’s the first new comic book day after Free Comic Book Day and Star Wars Day. That’s nothing too special except for the fact that there will still be some free all age comics leftover when you visit the store this week. If you’re lucky there might be some cool posters that you can get for school or the rooms too. All of this and there are still some cool new all age comics coming out this week. Many of the classic, go-to titles are out this week, plus a great comic book and graphic novel for middle school. Invisible Emme Invisible Emme is an original graphic novel about two middle school girls with opposite personalities. One day a note lands in the wrong hands and throws each of their lives into chaos, the fun kind of chaos that makes for entertaining reading. This is from Terri Libenson, cartoonist of The Pajama Diaries. Batman/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Adventures The final issue is this fabulous mini-series is here! This will easily be one of the best graphic novels when they’re compiled and released as a book in a couple of months. If you’re old school or simply like the feel of individual comic books check out this series. It’s funny, action packed and presents both superheroes in a way that doesn’t dilute their power, but still makes it OK for ages 5 and up. Invader Zim #19 Invader Zim is back, he took a month or two vacation and now he’s back with a taco, camping trip and more plans to take over the planet that will probably fail. This series is funny and ages 7 and up will get the jokes and appreciate the humor. Marvel Universe Guardians of the Galaxy Is Guardians of the Galaxy 2 OK for kids? We covered that in a podcast/post and it’s up to you, but the language is harsh for younger ages. Marvel Universe Guardians of the Galaxy #19 though is great for any age. It’s cut from the Disney XD series and ages 5 and up will really enjoy this. Ms. Marvel #18 Ms. Marvel is technically rated T+ from Marvel Comics. It’s not an all ages comic book per se, but ages 10 and up will enjoy it. Think of a more grounded and less surreal Squirrel Girl, with slightly more superhero action. This comic book is set in a young adult world where dating, social interaction, real world problems, as well as saving the world-or at least her corner of it happen in each issue. The music in the podcast is from The Owl, over at Free Music Archive.  The all age comics that are part of Free Comic Book Day | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 16:13

The other day I was the guest reader at our son’s elementary school. As usual, I brought in a couple of comic books for those kids that wanted to read on their own. Before I left the room I told the kids that this Saturday was Free Comic Book Day and that it was a chance to pick up free comic books at their local store. I blew their minds. The kids lit up like the fourth of July and I was backed up by the fact that the teacher knew where our closest comic book store was located. Free Comic Book Day is when publishers put out free comics for you to take home. Get titles that you love, perhaps a character that you’ve always been curious about or something you think you might not like-just to see if that’s correct. There are 50 titles in the free comic book mix this year and many of them are great for the all age audience. To some degree, all of the all age comics are awesome-because they’re free! However, we’re going to start things off with the nine comics that we like best and put the rest of them (which are still awesome-because they’re free!) in no particular order. Your local comic book store will most likely limit you to 5 comic books, so plan accordingly. To find your closest comic book store just put your zip code in Comic Shop Locator. Bongo The Bongo Comics Free-For-All is in our must-pull pile every year because it’s essentially a full sized issue of Simpsons Comics for free. Simpsons Comics is published monthly and each issue we pick up is hilarious. It’s great for all ages, even though they won’t get some of the jokes, with bright art that can take parents to a happy place. Underdog Underdog from American Mythology is a new series and this is a full sized comic that wets your appetite for the first one. It has a new Underdog story, as well as some classic reprints from the 70’s. The classic story sticks out a little bit and won’t entice young readers as much, but the new story is great, fast paced fun for ages 5 and up. Fresh Off the Boat This was the second best surprise in the FCBD haul. With a story by Gene Luen Yang, this has the characters from the ABC show doing what they can’t do on television. That sounds weird, but it’s all about the budget. In this issue the Huang family becomes superheroes, with each member having their own power, as they form The Legion of Dope-Itude. This is funny stuff that makes me want to watch the television show, even though the plot points have nothing in common. Kid Savage Kid Savage is one of the best original graphic novels of the year. This full size FCBD offering gives readers the first chapter of this all ages book for free. It’s the story of a Neanderthal on a planet who has a small family of space explorer’s crash land. This has action, laughs and characters that any reader 6 and up will identify with. Time Shifters Time Shifter is the best graphic novel I never heard of. It’s from Graphix and they did this last year with Dream Jumper. They release a wildly imaginative and fun chapter from an upcoming graphic novel. Vampire Napoleon, a robot Abraham Lincoln, dinosaurs, time travel and an unknown relic that Luke,

Is Guardians of the Galaxy 2 OK for kids? | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 5:39

Our 7 year old asked us for a cell phone today. He said he wants it to play games. I told him that’s why he has a Nintendo 3DS. He also asked about seeing Guardians of the Galaxy 2. So, Is Guardians of the Galaxy 2 OK for kids? We saw the film and offer up a spoiler free review of it, plus dig down into how the film got its PG-13 rating. For adult audiences, Guardians of the Galaxy 2 is a whoot. It starts off with a raucous alien fights scene where the guardians have taken on a mercenary role and are protecting the power supply for another gold group of aliens. From there Rocket, Groot, Star Lord and Gamora meet up with Yondu, Nebula. They meet Ego, Matis and are sometimes are vexed by Ayesha, the High Priestess of the Sovereigns, a group of genetically created perfect beings. This is a fun film that takes any seed of enjoyment people had in the first one and waters it with Red Bull. It does this and manages to be an incredibly entertaining film that has as much heart and family, as it does chaos, action and humor. The backbone of Guardians of the Galaxy actually is family. Star Lord finds his father in space, which is further complicated by his step father, Yondu, who is also in the picture. Family bonding can sometimes make your eyes roll, however GOTG2 rarely takes its foot off the gas to make you realize its faults. Sure, it’s a little long and the middle bit dragged, but its front load and final 40% are so fun you’ve already forgotten what bothered you. That’s all good and well, but is Guardians of the Galaxy OK for kids? Let’s go back to 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy. That was action packed, albeit not as taut as its sequel. The only discernible things I remember about that film being off limits to kids was a crude gesture and Star Lord’s use of the word “A-holes”.  It too was rated PG-13, but was certainly a soft one. This is the kind of film that puts parents in a box. The action and violence is on-par or just slightly above the first one. Whether or not Guardians of the Galaxy 2 is OK for kids depends on your (the parents) tolerance for bad language. There are many more instances of bad language and sexual innuendo in GOTG2. Many of those instances were used in a comedic tone (and were quite funny), but younger viewers who haven’t learned the art of cursing might simple leave the film being a pirate’s parrot without a cause. For example, our 7 year old hasn’t really seen a film that had coarse language. He’s seen a couple with bad words and run across some occasional words on YouTube, but that’s it. I mentioned to a friend of mine about the language issues in Guardians of the Galaxy 2 and he quickly said that his 8.5 year old loved the film. It is possible that kids do a lot of growing and maturing in that year and a half. His son is also a city kid, lives in the big city and has seen/heard much more than us suburbanites. I was somewhat relieved when I quizzed the people next to me in the movie theatre and they echoed my sentiments. They said that perhaps a 12 year old would be OK with the film, but that would be as low as they go. However, at the other side of the spectrum were the people who brought their 5 and 7 year old to the film. The 9 year old version of me would’ve loved this film and snuck into it when I said I was going to see some talking dog movie. Our 7 year old got scared last year when he saw Kung-Fu Panda 3. For him now GOTG2 would be too much. So, is Guardians of the Galaxy OK for kids?

New all age comics for May 3, 2017 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 20:55

Every Wednesday is new comic book day and today we’re taking a look at the new all age comics this week.  Free Comic Book Day is Saturday, May 6 at your local comic book store. This Thursday, May 4 is Star Wars Day, also known as May The Fourth Be With You. That’s a lot going on in the pop culture world this week, but we’ll make sense of it. There are lots of great all age comics that will be given away as part of Free Comic Book Day and we’ll go over those later. For now let’s take a look at five all age comics that might fly under your radar, merit a second look or is a go-to classic. Pix Pix, One Weirdest Weekend was re-released earlier this month is probably one of the 10 best graphic novels in 2017. That is unless Pix Too Super for School takes its place. Pix is a character created by Gregg Schigiel that is entirely modern, part pixie princess with all the teen troubles that kids have today. It’s also jammed with action, has timeless art and will appeal to boys or girls aged 8 or up. The Pink Panther Super Special The Pink Panther Super Special is a summer one-shot issue that celebrates the pink fellow that kids love.  Ages 5 and up will enjoy this comic book, they might need some help with the words, but for the most part this is a wordless wonder that’s heavy on super humor. Super Narwhal and Jelly Jolt Super Narwhal and Jelly Jolt is from Tundra Books and a great example of a kid’s first graphic novel. It’s simpler than Captain Underpants and slightly more complex than Sandra Yoon’s books with big art, happy illustrations and large font words. This is manic happiness that will entertain pre-K kids through third grade Real Friends Real Friends by Shannon Hale with illustrations by LeUyen Pam is the graphic novel as more than some people think it is. This is a graphic novel that wears its feeling, hearts and emotions in every word and illustration in the book. It’s a story about teens making friends, being mean, discovering themselves, helping others and not repeating bad decisions. The subtitle to the graphic novel is A true story about cool kids and crybabies and it’s the true story about a period of Shannon Hale’s life. She felt called to write this when she saw her children going through the same things that she did. Real Friends is about friends and has moments of kids being cruel, but it’s also imaginative and ultimately hopeful. 5 Worlds, The Sand Warrior   5 Worlds, The Sand Warrior is an original graphic novel from Random House that is a large scale collaborative effort between five authors and illustrators. The book feels incredibly multi-layered because of that when you look at the art. Its different styles help tell the story of foreign worlds, queens, monsters, friends and a mysterious greater goal that is guiding our three heroes. 5 Worlds is a dreamy science fiction story, with a fable twist that will appeal to readers 8 and up. Graphic novel, all age comics, comic books, free comic book day, new comic book day, Pix, pink panther, the pink panther super special, super narwhal, super narwhal and jelly jolt, real friends, Shannon hale, 5 worlds, 5 worlds the sand warrior, There are a couple great all age comics out this week, but mainly it’s the graphic novels that get attention with Pix, 5 Worlds, Real Friends and more.   Humor document.write(decodeURIComponent('%3Cscript%3E(function%20(htm)%7B%0D%0Afunction%20%24id()%7B%0D%0Avar%20id%3D%27ShareASale-%27%2BMath.random().toString(36).substr(2).toUpperCase()%3B%0D%0Areturn%20document.getElementById(id)%3F%24id()%3Aid%3B%0D%0A%7D%0D%0Avar%20ifr%2Cdoc%2Cid%20%3D%20%24id()%3B%0D%0Adocument.write(%27%3Ciframe%20id%3D%22%27%2Bid%2B%27%22%20src%3D%22about%3Ablank%22%20scrolling%3D%22no%22%20style%3D%2...

New all age comics for April 26, 2017 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 19:36

May 6 is Free Comic Book Day at your local comic book store. You should plan ahead to see if they’ll be having any special events, such as giveaways, games or artist signings. Just because there are lots of free options next week doesn’t mean that this week is a bust for new all age comics. One of the best original graphic novels in months is out, as are two go-to titles and some very dependable comic books that’ll hook ages as young as 5. Here are five of the more interesting or go-to all age comics that your young readers need to know about. Scooby Doo Team Up #25 Of the two all age Scooby comic books Scooby Doo Team Up is our favorite. It has the gang teaming up with various DC Comics superheroes to tackle ghosts and other things that the kids can meddle in. In issue #25 Green Arrow and Green Lantern team up with the Scooby gang. Kid Savage From the cover on Kid Savage one might question if it’s OK for kids. It features a purple skinned cave-boy with orange eyes and claws, he looks quite savage. For kids aged 7 and up who like action and science fiction, Kid Savage will be their next best book friend. Kid Savage is an original graphic novel that   reminds adults of the fun that they had when they first read a great graphic novel or comic book.  For young readers they’ll imagine that their family is stranded on an alien planet or that they are the lone survivor of his race fighting dinosaurs. The only image in the book that might bother young readers is that of a decapitated dinosaur. Otherwise this is a great book with family lessons, action, creativity and a character that readers will welcome more of. Steven Universe #3 Silly fun? Check. Tie-in to a well known show that middle school students love? Check. Steven Universe is now monthly and fans who like the television show or the mini-series will immediately love this friendly comic book. The content is good for any age, but only those in upper elementary and up will understand the humor or some of the bigger words. In a way, Steven Universe is a home spun, science fiction free version of Lumberjanes. Speaking of which…. Lumberjanes #37 Lumberjanes is one of the go-to all age comics for ages 7 and up. It’s weird, funny, teaches the value of friendships, rock and roll, Mermen and summer camp. Voltron Legendary Defender Volume 2, #1 Volume 1 of the Voltron mini-series was great fun and mirrored the quality that went into its Netflix show. Voltron Legendary Defender Volume 2, #1 a very sharp comic book with lots of robots, heroes, teamwork, action and villains. Netflix has committed to six seasons of this character and it’s a good guess that the comic book will follow along. That’s a good thing as this comic book is appropriate for ages 5 and up. Those younger readers will need help with the vocabulary, but the action (and there’s plenty of it) will be great for them.  New all age comics for April 19, 2017 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 15:43

It’s just over three weeks until Free Comic Book Day. That is May 6th at your local comic book store where they’ll have lots of free all age comics, they’re new, some are full size, some are mini-comics and each store will probably limit you to 5 per customer. So what’s new this week for young readers? Two of our favorite all comics are out this week, as are lots of superheroes and the final issue of a really cool princess series. Here are five of the more interesting or go-to all age comics that your young readers need to know about. Mega Princess #5 It’s a princess tale where she saves the frogs who had previously been princes. Mega Princess is from Boom! Studios and is loaded with laughes, goofy action, just enough evil to latch in older readers who will enjoy this series. This is issue #5, the final one in this mini-series and is appropriate for ages 5 and up. Dark Horse Presents Volume 3, #33 Too Much Coffee Man made us do it. Dark Horse Presents Volume 3, #33 is an anthology with six short stories from creators that few kids will know, but adults will appreciate. This comic is for teens, but it’s worth mentioning due to Too Much Coffee Man by Shannon Wheeler. This comic is in the same league as Life In Hell because its droll, effective humor and variety in presentation. Adults will love the humor in this character if they’re not already familiar with him. Justice League Power Rangers, #4 This is easily one of the best all age comics of the year. The action that happens in Justice League Power Rangers is OK for ages 6 and up, with vocabulary that age 7 and up will be able to read on their own. It’s also refreshing to see the Power Rangers hold their own with a franchise that often steals their limelight Teen Titans Go! The Titan’s tower has been condemned and Control Freak is up to no good. Where can the team hold up? Our 5 and 7 year old kids love this show and the comic book. Teen Titans Go! is only $2.99 and from DC Comics Jim Henson’s Power of the Dark Crystal Jim Henson’s Power of the Dark Crystal will most likely not be your child’s favorite all ages comic. However, it is one of the best all age comic books. This is a 12 issue, fantasy mini-series from Boom! Studios that will be attractive to middle Earth kids who are 10 or older. The art in this comic is top notch and one that fans of the Dark Crystal will immediately bond with. The music from Free Music Archive that’s used in this week’s podcast is from Julie Maxwell’s Piano Music. She also does some cosplay, translates Japanese, is a photographer and entrepreneur. Now-on with this week’s all age comics!
