A conversation with AMA Supercross rider Weston Peick | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 10:25

Have you or your family ever been to Supercross? It’s madness, controlled chaos and looks like scenes that were too dangerous to put in Mad Mad: Fury Road. AMA Supercross can also be a little confusing for those first timers. Admittedly, I had no idea what structure the race had or how the racers knew exactly what to do. Even for those that know nothing about the sport, this fact is clear: Supercross is an event that the whole family will enjoy. To get me up to speed on exactly how a Supercross race works I spoke with nine year veteran of the circuit, Weston Peick.  Peick races for Joe Gibbs Racing, has 8 career top-five finishes (450XS) and many other career highlights. Our interview with Weston Peick provides a general overview of Supercross, his non-traditional path to the sport and what it takes to succeed.

New comic book day is every Wednesday and in that collection are lots of all ages comics that will appeal to some readers as young at six years old. In the podcast and YouTube version we’ll talk about a Trollhunters graphic novel, the latest Plants Vs. Zombies, two of the best all ages comics that come out each month are out this week, plus a couple others you’ll want to hear about. For now though, lets look at three comic books that will entertain young readers, without parents having to be concerned about its content. Star Wars Adventures Star Wars Adventures is one of the staple all ages comics from IDW Publishing. Issue #7 is out this week in this very consistent comic book series that manages to bring the Force, as well as a variety of Star Wars characters to a young audience. In theory any age will enjoy Star Wars Adventures. However, ages 12 and younger will enjoy it the most and that’s only because ages older than that will skew up to Marvel Comics story lines. The art in Star Wars Adventures is parallel to Star Wars: Rebels, but there is enough action to maintain older audiences, humor for the younger ones and accessible art for all ages to appreciate. Rockos Modern Life Rockos Modern Life is one of those comic books that middle school kids want to discover. Its reading level is going to be OK for upper elementary, but that age won’t get the humor as well, or as quickly,as their slightly older contemporaries. Is this issue Spunky has a viral video, but Rocko is concerned that the fame is going to his head. Ages 12 and up will enjoy this left of center gem that some of their parents have fond memories of too. My Little Pony, Friendship is Magic When in doubt, go old school and My Little Pony, Friendship is Magic is the reliable, early reading friend for girls aged 5 and up. Girls even younger than that certainly enjoy MLP and with supervision, as parents read to them could also enjoy the all ages comic book version of Equestria. We read comic books to our kids when they were toddler through pre-K and that’s a great way for them to discover reading. In issue #63 of My Little Pony, Friendship is Magic there’s a boycott against desserts and that could upend Sugar Cube Corner.  All ages comics for February 7 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 14:27

Happy new comic book day, it happens every Wednesday and with that comes dozens of new all ages comics that are great for anyone. This week in the podcast we’ll look at some graphic novels on two Presidents with action, a mini-series from a recent Disney film, a funny series about a fat samurai and two comic books based on toys.  Right now let’s look at three all ages comics that will be great for young readers aged 7 and up. Adventure Time #73 At almost seven years old this monthly series is still going strong. Adventure Time, the all ages comic book from Boom! Studios is just as wacky and offbeat as its television inspiration, but because it’s in a printed format it appears more grounded. If you have a reluctant reader who already likes the show on Cartoon Network have them check out this book. They can be fans of the show or not, either way this is a fun comic book that will appeal to kids 7 and up. Back to the Future: Time Train #2 Neither of our kids have seen Back to the Future. Both of them would be OK with the content, it’s just a matter of too many great 80’s films and not enough time. If they had-and could read at a higher level they would really want to read Back to the Future from IDW Publishing. The monthly series is great and blends science-fiction, action and humor in as well as the classic film. They’ll sometimes have nice mini-series that concentrate on certain characters and Time Train is one of them. Doc Brown has made a time train for his wife Clara and they’re visiting the 1939 World’s Fair. Not surprisingly, some other folks are aware of their presence and are up to no good. This has realistic art and a great story for those middle school readers who like time travel or have seen Back to the Future. Mech Cadet Yu #6 Mech Cadet Yu is a great ongoing monthly series from Boom! Studios. It features teen cadets who are training to be pilots of giant robots whose moves echo what they do. The action in this series is as good as it gets for all ages comics. In this issue they cadets discover evil, but are away from their robot Mech suits. The reading level is a little high for early elementary school students, but those in fourth grade should be able to read it on their own, while ages 8 and up will love the action.   Humor document.write(decodeURIComponent('%3Cscript%3E(function%20(htm)%7B%0D%0Afunction%20%24id()%7B%0D%0Avar%20id%3D%27ShareASale-%27%2BMath.random().toString(36).substr(2).toUpperCase()%3B%0D%0Areturn%20document.getElementById(id)%3F%24id()%3Aid%3B%0D%0A%7D%0D%0Avar%20ifr%2Cdoc%2Cid%20%3D%20%24id()%3B%0D%0Adocument.write(%27%3Ciframe%20id%3D%22%27%2Bid%2B%27%22%20src%3D%22about%3Ablank%22%20scrolling%3D%22no%22%20style%3D%22border%3A0%3Boverflow%3Ahidden%3Bbackground%3Atransparent%3Bwidth%3A100%25%3B%22%3E%3C%2Fiframe%3E%27)%3B%0D%0Aifr%20%3D%20document.getElementById(id)%3B%0D%0Adoc%20%3D%20ifr.contentDocument%7C%7Cifr.contentWindow.document%3B%0D%0Adoc.open()%3B%0D%0Adoc.write(%27%3C!DOCTYPE%20html%3E%3Chtml%3E%3Cmeta%20charset%3D%22UTF-8%22%3E%3Cbody%20style%3D%22height%3A100%25%3Bmargin%3A0%3Bpadding%3A0%3Bfont-family%3Asans-serif%3Bfont-size%3A12pt%3B%22%3E%27%2Bhtm%2B%27%3C%2Fbody%3E%3C%2Fhtml%3E%27)%3B%0D%0Adoc.close()%3B%0D%0Awindow.setTimeout((%0D%0Afunction(I%2CD)%7B%0D%0Avar%20s%3D%20I.style%2C%20%0D%0Ab%20%3D%20doc.body%3B%0D%0As.width%20%3D%20b.scrollWidth%20%2B%20%27px%27%3B%0D%0As.height%20%3D%20b.scrollHeight%20%2B%20%27px%27%3B%0D%0A%7D%0D%0A).bind(null%2C%20ifr%2C%20doc)%2C200)%3B%0D%0A%7D)(decodeURIComponent(%27%253Ca%2520target%253D%2522_blank%2522%2520href%253D%2522http%253A%252F%252Fshareasale.com%252Fm-pr.cfm%253Fmerchantid%253D8908%2526amp%253Buserid%253D1034575%2526amp%253Bproductid%253D752086199%2526amp%253Bafftrack%253D%2522%2520style%253D%2522display%253Ainlin...

New all ages comics for January 24 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 13:08

The new all ages comics this are back on track with lots of classic titles that will appeal to a wide range of readers. In the podcast and YouTube version we’ll talk about the DC duo, an anime rooted return of MegaMan and a comic book that will really speak to girls, ages 8 and up that want sci-fi action. For now, let’s look at three all ages comics that ages 6 and up will want to read. Ducktales Ducktales is an all new comic book from IDW Publishing with stories from Uncle Scrooge, Donald and more ducks. This is madcap fun that has its roots in the original show, as well as the reboot on Disney XD. The content in Ducktales is fine for ages 6 and up, but they’ll need help reading it as the comic books has lots of vocabulary. Star Wars Adventures, Forces of Destiny: Ahsoko and Padme Star Wars Adventures is an ongoing monthly series from IDW Publishing. Star Wars Adventures, Forces of Destiny is a mini-series that highlights some of the girls in the Star Wars universe in their own adventures. The way that Star Wars Adventures blends content and age appropriateness is a great example of one of the all ages comics that appeal to kids, without dumbing down the content. This is loaded with action, humor and stories that kids aged 6 and up will want to read. Steven Universe Steven Universe is a smart show, and its comic book from Boom! Studios follows suit. The show, as well as the comic book is intended for children aged 8 and up. Think of a less manic Adventure Time, but keep in place some of the abstract characters, add practical relationships, friendship and adventure. Steven Universe #12 retails for $3.99, fans of the show will enjoy it, as will those looking for a grounded comic book, with just enough spacey edge.  All new comics for January 17 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 12:29

Hello new comic book day and the new all ages comics that come with it. This week in the podcast and YouTube version we’ll talk about one of the most anticipated books of the year, a 90’s classic from Nick that’s on its second issue and go-to comic strip about everyone’s favorite dog. If you’re headed to you local comic book store be sure to check out these three all ages comics that will entertain young readers from ages 5 and up. Miraculous #19 Miraculous is one of those fun all ages comics that follows the exploits of a television show. In this case Miraculous is cut from the exact pages of the show that it’s known for and beyond. Ladybug and Cat Noir are the alter superhero ego’s for Marinette and Adrien. They’re two French teens and Marinette seriously has a crush on Adrien, but he doesn’t know-despite the fact that they fight super villains together. This is a fun monthly comic from Action Lab Entertainment that readers 6 and up will enjoy, especially if they like the show. Jim Henson The Storyteller Fairies, #2 Jim Henson The Storyteller Fairies is the kind of comic book that will attract those art kids. They’re the ones who concentrate on the story and art, regardless of what subject matter happens in the comic.  In The Storyteller Fairies we see stories about different fairies all over the world. Issue #2 looks at Menehune the fairies of Hawaiian folklore. I can see some of your eyes glossing over from here…however, just look at the comic and those that want a treat will recognize it when they see it. Star Wars Adventures, #6 With all the hoopla surrounding The Last Jedi issue #6 from Star Wars Adventures is highly appropriate. Rose Tico, the dedicated mechanic from that film takes center stage in this one-shot story. This is one of the best all ages comics from 2017 with art and story that are appropriate and entertaining for ages 5 and up. What all ages comics are you or your child reading? Please let us know in the comments and pass along any suggestions.  All ages comics for December 27 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 15:29

It’s Christmas week and your local comic book store is closed on December 25, but this week on new comic book day, (which is every Wednesday) there are some great all ages comics to fill the bill in case Santa missed the case. On the podcast and YouTube channel we’ll talk about Dog Man and Cat Kid, Geronimo Stilton, Star Wars Adventures and other mandatory things that your elementary school student will absolutely love. In the meantime, here are three all ages comics that will entertain-and be appropriate for ages as young as 5. Casper and Wendy #1 As a kid I remember reading the old school Casper and Wendy team-up comic books. Wendy is the good witch, all dressed in red and Casper is the friendly ghost; between the two of them they manage to find fun wherever they go. These stories are fun and original, but have the same, classic characters that fans will remember from their original run. Kids aged 9 and up should be able to read Casper and Wendy on their own, while those 5 and up will want it read to them whilst they look at the pictures. Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur, #26 Galactus is back-and where he goes The Silver Surfer can’t be far behind. However, this time they meet Moon Girl-but is it a social call or something more world devouring? Moon Girl is a great monthly comic book for those in upper elementary and older. It has lots of action, but not the hyper-violent kind. It also has lots of humor-but not the fart or teen kind. It’s simply one of those great, creative, all ages comics for boys or girls aged 10 and up. Samurai Jack : Quantum Jack (#4 of #5) Samurai Jack is lost in time and can’t remember anything. In this mini-series from IDW Publishing he’s survived a series of villains, but this time he’s trapped inside the body of a desk worker. Do your kids like Johnny Test? If so then they’ll really enjoy Samurai Jack. The television version of Samurai Jack skews older, just like most other television-to-comic book translations. This mini-series, Samurai Jack: Quantum Jack will be appropriate for middle school and up.   Humor   document.write(decodeURIComponent('%3Cscript%3E(function%20(htm)%7B%0D%0Afunction%20%24id()%7B%0D%0Avar%20id%3D%27ShareASale-%27%2BMath.random().toString(36).substr(2).toUpperCase()%3B%0D%0Areturn%20document.getElementById(id)%3F%24id()%3Aid%3B%0D%0A%7D%0D%0Avar%20ifr%2Cdoc%2Cid%20%3D%20%24id()%3B%0D%0Adocument.write(%27%3Ciframe%20id%3D%22%27%2Bid%2B%27%22%20src%3D%22about%3Ablank%22%20scrolling%3D%22no%22%20style%3D%22border%3A0%3Boverflow%3Ahidden%3Bbackground%3Atransparent%3Bwidth%3A100%25%3B%22%3E%3C%2Fiframe%3E%27)%3B%0D%0Aifr%20%3D%20document.getElementById(id)%3B%0D%0Adoc%20%3D%20ifr.contentDocument%7C%7Cifr.contentWindow.document%3B%0D%0Adoc.open()%3B%0D%0Adoc.write(%27%3C!DOCTYPE%20html%3E%3Chtml%3E%3Cmeta%20charset%3D%22UTF-8%22%3E%3Cbody%20style%3D%22height%3A100%25%3Bmargin%3A0%3Bpadding%3A0%3Bfont-family%3Asans-serif%3Bfont-size%3A12pt%3B%22%3E%27%2Bhtm%2B%27%3C%2Fbody%3E%3C%2Fhtml%3E%27)%3B%0D%0Adoc.close()%3B%0D%0Awindow.setTimeout((%0D%0Afunction(I%2CD)%7B%0D%0Avar%20s%3D%20I.style%2C%20%0D%0Ab%20%3D%20doc.body%3B%0D%0As.width%20%3D%20b.scrollWidth%20%2B%20%27px%27%3B%0D%0As.height%20%3D%20b.scrollHeight%20%2B%20%27px%27%3B%0D%0A%7D%0D%0A).bind(null%2C%20ifr%2C%20doc)%2C200)%3B%0D%0A%7D)(decodeURIComponent(%27%253Ca%2520target%253D%2522_blank%2522%2520href%253D%2522http%253A%252F%252Fshareasale.com%252Fm-pr.cfm%253Fmerchantid%253D8908%2526amp%253Buserid%253D1034575%2526amp%253Bproductid%253D731356718%2526amp%253Bafftrack%253D%2522%2520style%253D%2522display%253Ainline-block%253Bborder-radius%253A2em%253Bborder%253A2pt%2520dashed%2520%252399E%253Bbackground%253Awhite%253Btext-decoration%253Anone%253B%2522%253E%253Ctable%2520style%253D%2522border-collapse%25...

All ages comics for December 20 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 19:14

What are the all ages comics this week? In the podcast and YouTube video we’ll go over two outstanding stories happening for the teen audience, plus three great graphic novels that make fabulous gifts. Mighty Morphin Power Rangers is great for kids aged 9 and up, Ms. Marvel is a very well written series that’s for kids just a little bit older. Shinobi Ninja Princess Lightning Oni #4 is a great action series for ages 8 and up. There are lots of other individual all ages comics out this week, check out the complete post for them. Which comic book are you most looking forward to? Let us know in the comments! Pokemon Adventures: Black & White Graphic Novel, volume 6 We’re starting to read Pokemon Adventures with our 6 year old. He’s a reluctant reader who knows some sight words, but likes action and Pokemon. We’ve tried some other books but he hasn’t really taken to them as quickly as we’d hoped. Pokemon Adventures is a manga, so it opens from the back (as opposed to traditional books) and had art that’s more in tune with anime. So far he’s open to reading them, as will your Pokemon reader who wants to go beyond collecting the cards or playing the game. Your Pal Archie, #5 With all the success that Riverdale is having, let’s not forget about the horse that Archie rode in on. Your Pal Archie is a regular monthly series that has Archie and his friends drawn in the classic style. This is one of the all ages comics staples that will hook in kids 5 and up. Realistically, girls will enjoy this series more than boys, but there’s enough Jughead goofiness to let some of the boys in on the fun too. Miraculous Adventures #4   Ladybug and Cat Noir leave Paris for a visit to NYC. This is the third and final issue of this storyline in this entertaining monthly comic book. These are original stories with art that mirrors the style that kids like so much in the Nickelodeon show. It’s got action, some laughs and bad guys. Think of it as a step up from PJ Masks. Whereas that show peaks for children around 7, Miraculous is OK for kids aged 5 and up, but holds the audience until the pre-teen years. This is also a great time to get some cool stocking stuffers. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Adventures: Robotanimals is great for ages 6 and up as is The Loud House graphic novel and girls ages 5 and up will dig My Little Pony Friends Forever Omnibus, Volume 3. Spongebob Comics In case this is your first time here, each issue of Spongebob Comics is one of the best all ages comics that you can pick up. From a storytelling perspective, as well as artistically, they are great comic for anyone aged 6 and up. We’ve been buying this comic book for years and our 8 year old is still reading the ones from many years ago. If you don’t let your child watch the television show because of the sass or attitude, you can rest easy. The comic book version of Spongebob is all humor and almost no sass, in other words, it won’t encourage bad behavior and is just flat out funny. Storytime with Batman If you have a kid aged 3-7 who is craving good-night books this your jam. Storytime with Batman is a box collection of six books that are the perfect length for the end of the day. Each book is loaded with baddies from Gotham City, action, lessons and plenty of sight words too. Green Arrow, The Flash, Nightwing and other superheroes also lend a hand to save the day. Angry Birds: Monsters and Missletoe Every three months Angry Birds Comics Quarterly comes out. If you like the fun that the animated Angry Birds series has then you’ll really like this oversized comic book. This is good, silly fun that ages 6 and up will enjoy, want to read (or at least try to) and laugh at the pigs as they get what’s coming to them.  All ages comics for December 6 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 17:24

What are the all ages comics this week? In the podcast and YouTube vide we’ll go over Rocko’s Modern Life from Boom! Studios, Batman and Robin Adventures from DC Comics, Usagi Yojimbo from Dark Horse Comics and more. If you’re here for the printed version of a look at some cool all ages comics here are three that’ll entertain readers as young as 6. Disney Princess From Joe Book the Disney Princess series has new stories from Belle, Airel, Tiana, Cinderalla and more. Think of a Disney Princess and she’ll be in this series. It consists of new stories that ages 6 and up will laugh, swoon and imagine themselves in their own ivory-towered palace. Batman/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II Batman/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II is the sequel to a very popular mini-series of the same name. In this mini-series Donatello inadvertently opens a door way to another reality while looking for a way to improve his fighting skills. Even worse the door he opens up allows Bane to go to NYC to where the TMNT live. This mini-series will be great for kids 9 and up. It’s important to note that this is the version of TMNT that skews slightly older than TMNT Adventures. Chimichanga: The World’s Worst Face Chimichanga: The World’s Worst Face is the story of a traveling circus with all manner of rarely seen creatures. It’s also a very unlikely fabulous all ages comic book. From Dark Horse Comics, Chimichanga has laughs, teaches kids a lesson and provides just enough fright to put them on edge. This is a fun comic book that has a zippy, carefree, meandering spirit that not enough comic books for young readers have.  New all ages comics for October 11 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 14:11

What are the new all ages comics this week? The Halloween theme continues with many of the monthly titles having their spooky, ghost centered issues out. In the Daddy Mojo podcast we’re talking about Mech Cadet Yu, Wrapped Up, Plants vs. Zombies, Thor and much more.   Here’s a look at five new all ages comics that you’ll want to pay attention that are in stores. Scooby Doo Where Are You? #86 Scooby Doo Where Are You? is one of the go-to all ages comics when it comes out. It’s priced at only $2.99 which is as low as they come. This is great for young readers who want to buy their own, or for the parents who don’t want to shell out more for a comic book kids might not like. This is classic Scooby Doo, solving mysteries and having fun. As it’s close to Halloween we see Frankenstein on the cover, Velma in the hospital and a couple of suspects who look like they’re up to no good. Ms. Marvel #23 Ms. Marvel, issue #23 is out this week. This title is great for middle school kids who like their superheroes with a bit more unpredictable behavior. There are superhero hijinks, but the lessons and story are more geared towards tweens and low teens. Ms. Marvel is a fun comic that’ll also attract reluctant middle school readers who want something left of center to read. This is a cool comic that flies alongside Unbeatable Squirrel Girl. Mech Cadet Yu #3 Mech Cadet Yu has been upgraded from mini-series to ongoing monthly series. It has everything that an 8  year old kid loves about reading like giant robots, kids fighting aliens alongside giant robots, lots of action and a great story. The reading ability might be too much for 8 year olds, but the content is fine. Also, kids may not request a great story, but that’s the secret sauce that keeps kids reading, which is exactly what they’ll do when they lay hands on an issue of Mech Cadet Yu. Snoopy-What’s Wrong With Dog Lips? Snoopy-What’s Wrong With Dog Lips? is classic Peanuts in a new story wrapper. When then monthly version of Peanuts stopped production they said that would continue with original graphic novels. Snoopy-What’s Wrong With Dog Lips? fulfills that promise with 176 pages of new art, new stories and a couple wet dog kisses and missed football kicks. Priced at $9.99 this is the kinds of book that kids 6 and up would kiss a friendly dog for. Marvel Comics Digest Thor With Thor: Ragnorok coming out all eyes are on the hammer. Marvel Comics Digest Thor has great Thor stories that are printed in popular-and much more compact, digest format. These are the semi-rectangular comic books that you’ll see at supermarket checkout lines. I don’t know if Marvel Comics Digest Thor will be there, but it’s certain to be at your local comic book store.   Humor document.write(decodeURIComponent('%3Cscript%3E(function%20(htm)%7B%0D%0Afunction%20%24id()%7B%0D%0Avar%20id%3D%27ShareASale-%27%2BMath.random().toString(36).substr(2).toUpperCase()%3B%0D%0Areturn%20document.getElementById(id)%3F%24id()%3Aid%3B%0D%0A%7D%0D%0Avar%20ifr%2Cdoc%2Cid%20%3D%20%24id()%3B%0D%0Adocument.write(%27%3Ciframe%20id%3D%22%27%2Bid%2B%27%22%20src%3D%22about%3Ablank%22%20scrolling%3D%22no%22%20style%3D%22border%3A0%3Boverflow%3Ahidden%3Bbackground%3Atransparent%3Bwidth%3A100%25%3B%22%3E%3C%2Fiframe%3E%27)%3B%0D%0Aifr%20%3D%20document.getElementById(id)%3B%0D%0Adoc%20%3D%20ifr.contentDocument%7C%7Cifr.contentWindow.document%3B%0D%0Adoc.open()%3B%0D%0Adoc.write(%27%3C!DOCTYPE%20html%3E%3Chtml%3E%3Cmeta%20charset%3D%22UTF-8%22%3E%3Cbody%20style%3D%22height%3A100%25%3Bmargin%3A0%3Bpadding%3A0%3Bfont-family%3Asans-serif%3Bfont-size%3A12pt%3B%22%3E%27%2Bhtm%2B%27%3C%2Fbody%3E%3C%2Fhtml%3E%27)%3B%0D%0Adoc.close()%3B%0D%0Awindow.setTimeout((%0D%0Afunction(I%2CD)%7B%0D%0Avar%20s%3D%20I.

The Drive to Learn, an interview with author Dr. Cornelius N. Grove about the habits and practices that allow East Asian students to excel in academics | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 27:01

The Drive to Learn by Dr. Cornelius N. Grove is a book whose subtitle drives its topic. What the East Asian Experience Tells Us about Raising Students Who Excel is a subtitle that might intimidate those outside of academia, but don’t worry. When said together, The Drive to Learn, What the East Asian Experience Tells Us about Raising Students Who Excel, lets readers know that the book is going to paints a full picture as to why the reality of the smart Asian student exists. I was tempted to type in ‘stereotype’ instead of ‘reality’ in that prior sentence. However, by any measure, students outside of East Asia retain less knowledge and score lower on tests across the board then children anywhere else.                                                   What The Drive to Learn establishes from the beginning is that the book is not an attack on western teachers. In speaking with Dr. Grove he’s obviously a huge fan of teachers, as well as the overall education process. The preface for the book sets out why the book was written, how it was written and who it’s written for. It’s important to point that out because there are differences in how content is presented, how the students receive it and to what degree it’s handled at home. As a book, The Drive to Learn has a thick notes section at the end and bibliography. Dr. Grove has culled through hundreds of various sized studies conducted in East Asia, as well as, other books that focus on education or culture. This is a book that’s deep with information, notes, numbers and takeaways for parents and educators who want to nail down what’s working-and what’s not working with western education. In a nutshell, it’s all about the approach and expectations. For example, East Asian students memorize things. It’s rote memorization, repeating after the teacher and touching the words in their books as they repeat them. But memorization doesn’t allow my creativity to shine through or my child wouldn’t sit still long enough to do that. Other parents might want their child to discover the answer on their own, because you don’t want to stifle their independence. Adventure Time/Regular Show mini-series The monthly Regular Show comic book ended and immediately thereafter they announced that this mini-series. Adventure Time Regular Show #1 is what happens when a new villain wants to take over Adventure Time’s Ooo. Books or stories that are told in a manga style are able to break through to readers. This is inspired by the hit Disney film and tells the same story, but is done is that distinctive, beautiful manga style. Ask any middle school librarian how popular manga is and you’ll get an idea of how much your upper elementary through high school student will enjoy this. Batman & Robin Adventures We often mention young reader books here and these folks do a great job. Capstone puts out some of the best all color, superhero books for young readers that you’ll find. These are proper books that are reasonable priced and concentrate as much on the words as they do on the illustrations. For grades 1-7 they cover a large audience and each book will target different audiences. They’ll be around 88 pages or so, thus they’re much thicker than the best all ages comics that’ll be in stores. Surfside Girls Surfside Girls, The Secret of Danger Point is by Kim Dwinell and is a soft, nuanced, love letter to summer, friendships, scary houses at the end of the street, mysteries and growing up. While the two main characters are girls in a coastal town, they will resonate with anyone and its story is one that has spook factor, but just enough realism to make you second guess that empty house. Mech Cadet Yu Think of a younger skewing Pacific Rim as one of the best all ages comics and you’ve got an idea about Mech Cadet Yu. Giant robots coming down from the sky to defend the world from even more terrifying aliens and kids are chosen to protect and defend.
