SGJ Podcast #147 – Randomness (Formerly Stellar Tactics) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:03:00

Welcome to this episode of the Space Game Junkie Podcast my friends! This week, Jim, Hunter and I were to sit down with the developer of the upcoming tactical space and ground combat trading RPG, Stellar Tactics, and talk about their game. Sadly, they never showed up. While we were recording the show, we had no idea what happened, so we pressed on and discussed what we’ve been playing, recent space game news and other random odds and ends. We found out after the show ended that our guest was being a good dad, and lost track of time while helping his daughter with her homework. Therefore, this week you get a random hour or so of verbal brickabrak! We’ll be bringing back our guest in May, however, so that’ll be fun! Next week on the show, we’ll be talking to the brotherly development team behind Star Command: Galaxies, which looks to be a lot of fun! As always, if you have questions, comments or suggestions, email us at hail@spacegamejunkie.com or hit us up on the forums. Thanks for listening/watching, and we hope you enjoy the show. See you next week!

 SGJ Podcast #146 – Concealed Intent | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:20:00

Welcome to this episode of the Space Game Junkie Podcast my friends! In this episode, Jim, Hunter and I sit down with Charles Cordingley of Jarrah Technology to talk about his spacey tactical fun time, Concealed Intent! This game is striving for a mix of Homeworld and Frozen Synapse, and I can tell you, it’s working splendidly. We talk about the highs and lows of indie game development, the challenges of marketing as well as developing when you’re a one-person operation, the long road the game has come before finally hitting release sometime this year and much more. Overall we had a really fun time talking to Charles, and I hope we can do so again once the game hits 1.0. It’s a really great game that I hope y’all check out! Next week on the show, we’ll be talking to the developer of the procedurally generated spacey RPG thing, Stellar Tactics! Thanks for listening/watching, and don’t forget you can hit us up at hail@spacegaejunkie.com for suggestions or what have you! Enjoy the show!

SGJ Podcast #145 – Wing Commander: Flat Universe | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:15:27

Hello my friends, and welcome to this episode of the Space Game Junkie Podcast! Today, I (sadly sans Jim or Hunter since it was a morning show) sit down with brothers Giannis and Dimitris Maslas to discuss their homage to the Wing Commander universe, entitled Wing Commander: Flat Universe. This is a top-down Wing Commander game that takes place between The Price of Freedom and Prophecy, and is being built in Unity for both single and multiplayer fans. In our episode, we talk a lot about the game itself, plus the Wing Commander series, space games in general, game development, and what it’s like to develop a game when your country (in this case, Greece) seems to be crumbling around you. It made for a pretty fun show, I think. ;) Also, I did the audio myself this time, rather than Jim, so if it doesn’t sound great, you can fully blame me. ;) Next week on the show, we’ll be back at our regular time, and talking to the developer of the fun tactical space game, Concealed Intent! Don’t forget to hit us up at hail@spacegamejunkie.com if you have any suggestions, questions or comments! :) Thanks for listening, and enjoy the show! :)

 SGJ Podcast #144 – Squadron Strike: Traveller | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:54:14

Welcome to this episode of the Space Game Junkie Podcast! In this episode, Jim, Hunter and I sit down with Ken Burnside of Ad Astra Games to talk about his currently Kickstarting board game, Squadron Strike: Traveller. Since board games aren’t my forte at all, it’s up to Jim and Hunter to carry the heavy interviewing load on this one, and they do a fantastic job. It also helps than Ken is a fantastic guest, so we have a really fun show talking about board game design, publishing, the history of the Traveller series and so on. Next week on the show, we’re doing an early episode due to the overseas nature of our guests. We’ll be sitting down with the the brother development team behind Wing Commander: Flat Universe to talk about their top-down, 2D Wing Commander fan project. This show will be at 6 AM Pacific time next Tuesday, so be sure to tune in live if you can. As always, if you have any suggestions or questions, hit us up at hail@spacegamejunkie.com. Thanks for listening, and we’ll see you next week!

 SGJ Podcast #143 – Drifter | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:50:42

Welcome to this episode of the Space Game Junkie Podcast! In this episode, Jim, Hunter and I sit down to talk to Colin Walsh of Celsius Game Studios about his early access space trading and combat game, Drifter, which was successfully Kickstarted in June, 2012. We talk to Colin about the long road the game has taken, the ups and downs of indie game development, creating one’s own engine, the roadmap for the game up to release (which is hopefully later this year) and much more! Coming up on our next episode, we broach the world of board games and talk to Ken Burnside, the creator of the currently kickstarting game, Squadron Strike: Traveler. Thanks for listening/watching my friends!

 SGJ Podcast #142 – GalaCollider | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:30:42

Welcome to this episode of the Space Game Junkie Podcast my friends! In this episode, Jim, Hunter and I sit down and talk to developer Trevor Worrall and designer Sebastian Chedal of NeoCrux, who are working on the card-based 4X game, GalaCollider. This game is a mix of traditional 4X gameplay along with something akin to a card-based board game. In fact, we learned that the game was originally prototyped as a physical board game. We played a couple of multiplayer sessions (the game is solely multiplayer right now in its alpha, but will add single player content later) and learned how much depth this game has, which is quite a bit. It was also a fun discussion on game design as well. We had some technical issues again this week, this time with the video recording. For some reason the stream to YouTube didn’t seem to fully capture the entire show. Not sure why as OBS was working the entire time, but it did drop a lot of frames, which might explain it. I’m hoping future shows won’t be as problematic as our last couple. Thanks for your patience in that regard. Next week we’ll be welcome the developer of the open-space trading and combat game Drifter! Don’t forget to hit us up at hail@spacegamejunkie.com if you have suggestions, comments or questions. Thanks for listening/watching, and we’ll see you next week!

 SGJ Podcast #141 – Planetary Prospectors A.R.M. | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:19:49

Hello folks, and welcome to this episode of the Space Game Junkie Podcast. In this episode, Jim, Hunter and I sit down with Nefarious Dimensions’ Clinton Bowman about their upcoming space mining simulation, Planetary Prospectors A.R.M.. We has a good discussion, but technically, we had problems the entire evening. First off, we’ve switched to Mumble for our voice chat and audio, but Clinton kept cutting out, so we switched to Skype. Not only did Clinton keep cutting out on Skype, but we lost our ability to record from Skype due to a recent update. Therefore, Jim had to find a way to record solely the audio from the MP4 video file we downloaded from YouTube, which is why this is so late. We apologize for the audio issues of this show, but sadly there wasn’t anything we could do about it. We hope you enjoyed this podcast episode. We really liked the game and really had fun with Clinton, so we hope you have fun too, and be sure to check out the game. Thanks for listening/watching!

 SGJ Podcast #140 – Tharsis | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:18:31

Welcome to the Space Game Junkie Podcast my friends! In this episode, Jim, Hunter and I sit down with Producer Matt Hickman of Choice Provisions about their crew and risk management Earth-to-Mars space game, Tharsis! This is a game that’s garnered a lot of emotion on the part of its players as well, moreso than most other games I’ve seen in this genre, so I also invited on two fans and friends of the show — Ben Parrish and Mark Hewitt — of the game to explain how they feel about the game, both positively and negatively respectfully. Now this was an odd show, and it’s entirely my fault, as I had to, at several points, step away and mute my mic due to a plumbing issue in my apartment. Thanks to my cohosts as well as Ben and Mark for keeping the conversation flowing. Overall it was a good discussion about the expectation of gamers, the mechanics of the game and a lot more! Next week, we’ll be talking to the developers of Planetary Prospectors: A.R.M., an interesting spacey miney game that I’m still trying to wrap my head around, in a good way. :) Thanks for watching/listening, and don’t forget to hit us up at hail@spacegamejunkie.com if you have a suggestion for a topic or a guest. Enjoy the show! :)

 SGJ Podcast #139 – Stars in Shadow | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:48:02

Hello friends, and welcome to this episode of the Space Game Junkie Podcast! In this show, Jim, Hunter and I sit down with Sven Olsen (programmer and co-designer) and Jim Francis (artist and co-designer) of Ashdar Games to talk about their upcoming colorful 4X space game, Stars in Shadow! This game has been in development for quite a while, so we’re able to talk about its long history, the ideas that have gone into it, what still remains to be done and so on. The game is three to six months out we’re told, but even at this stage it’s very playable and challenging, and we had a great time playing it and talking about it. Sven and Jim were great guests, so we had a blast talking to them. I admit I was a bit out of it though, so the tangents are a bit more common in this episode. Regardless, we hope y’all enjoy it! Next week we’ll have the developers of Tharsis on to talk about their die-rolling crew-management game. Thanks for listening/watching, and remember if you have a suggestion for a guest or topic, feel free to hit us up at hail@spacegamejunkie.com. See you next week!
