 SGJ Podcast #206 – Astrobase Command | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:52:27

Welcome to this latest Space Game Junkie Podcast my friends! This week, Jim, Hunter, Spaz and I sit down with Dave Williams – Co-Founder and Everything Designer at Jellyfish Games — to talk about their recently successfully Kickstarted space station building and personality meshing sim, Astrobase Command. While we didn’t get to touch the game our own selves, we still, I think, came up with good questions to ask Dave about his game, and the game itself does sound pretty awesome. A good portion of the show, however, was a broader discussion about the state of the games industry, why there hasn’t been a crash yet (but there will likely still be one), the difficulties of running a Kickstarter campaign and a LOT more. Dave is an industry veteran, so he had a lot of awesome insights, and I think it speaks well for Astrobase Command that he came across so knowledgeable and passionate about gaming in general. Overall, it was a great, great show, and we hope you enjoy it. Next week on the show, we’ll be doing an early morning episode (for me anyway) to talk to the folks behind the Freelanceresque MMO, Sirius Online! As always, if you have a question or comment, please drop them below, email us at hail@spacegamejunkie.com or hit us up on the forums. Thanks for listening!!! Show Notes Games Mentioned * Startopia * SimCity * Dungeon Keeper * Rimworld * XCOM * World of Warcraft * Elite Dangerous * Ashes of Creation * Tom Clancy’s The Division * Elder Scrolls Online * Guild Wars 2 * Master of Orion * X-COM: UFO Defense * Star Citizen * Skyrim * Fallout 4 * Kingdoms of Amalur * Artemis * Star Trek: Bridge Crew * Quintet * Pulsar * Rebel Galaxy * Everspace

SGJ Podcast #205 – Remnants of the Precursors | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:42:36

Welcome to this latest episode of the Space Game Junkie Podcast my friends! This week, Jim, Hunter, Spaz and I welcome Ray Fowler, developer of Remnants of the Precursors! If you’re unaware, Remnants of the Precursors (formerly JavaMOO) is an homage/update to Master of Orion 1, not 2, which is what EVERYONE ELSE is trying to do. ;) We talk to Ray about the history of the project, why the original Master of Orion is the better game (it is), the ups and down (shockingly mostly ups) of releasing a game for free and much more. It’s a really fun and lively discussion, and hey even the stream worked much of the time! Huzzah! We had a great time talking to Ray, and we hope you have as great a time listening. Next week on the show, we’ll be talking to the folks behind the (as of yesterday, successfully, yay!) Kickstarting space station sim, Astrobase Command! As always, if you have a question or comment, please drop them below, email us at hail@spacegamejunkie.com or hit us up on the forums.  SGJ Podcast #204 – Discovery Freelancer | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:39:11

Welcome to episode 204 of the Space Game Junkie Podcast my friends! This week, Jim, Hunter, Spaz and I sit down with Sindroms, one of the server admins behind the genius Freelancer mod, Discovery Freelancer. We talk about the long history of the mod (a decade at least), the ins and outs of Freespace modding, why Freespace isn’t available digitally and so much more. We had a really fun discussion because Freelancer is such a fun game, but also because Sindroms is a really colorful fella. :) He was also kind enough to join us in the middle of the night, Latvian time, which was nice as it meant almost all of us could join in. Overall we had a phenomenal time, AAAANNNND, we didn’t drop any frames during the stream! Yay! Next week we’ll be talking to the folks behind the Master of Orion 1 (yes, not 2, thank god, everyone’s trying to do 2) remake/homage thingy, Remnants of the Precursors! If you have any questions or comments, please hit us up below, email us at hail@spacegamejunkie.com or hit us up on the forums. Also, finally, the review contest is over. We had a solid amount of entries, and I’ll be contacting the winner soon. Thanks to everyone who entered!  SGJ Podcast #203 – Empyrean Frontier | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:53:15

Welcome to episode 203 of the Space Game Junkie Podcast, my friends! This week, Jim, Hunter, Spaz and I sit down with John Carr of Galdor Studios to discuss his upcoming real-time strategy game, Empyrean Frontier (Itch.io, Steam). We had a great discussion about the game, it’s history, it’s ongoing development, the differences between Itch.io and Steam for an indie developer, straining for visibility for your indie game and much more. Technically, we had a much better stream this time, so I was actually able to focus a bit more on the actual show this week (though thankfully Jim and Spaz did much of the heavy lifting, interview-wise). Overall, it was a really fun show about a game I’m sure y’all are gonna wanna play, because it’s great (I’ll have a preview video up tomorrow). :) Next week on the show, we welcome the project lead of a game we’re super enamored with right now, so join us as we talk about Discovery Freelancer! If you have a question or comment about this episode, please feel free to drop them below, email us at hail@spacegamejunkie.com or hit us up on the forums. Thanks so much for listening/watching, and we hope you enjoy the show. PS. Don’t forget we also still have a contest running! If you leave us a (hopefully positive) review on iTunes, you’ll be entered for a chance to win one of the many game codes I have, from the entire Wing Commander series on GOG to all of the X-Wing games on Steam. Once you’ve left a review, screenshot it and email it to contests@spacegamejunkie.com! The contest runs for ONE MORE WEEK, so get on it!  SGJ Podcast #202 – Between the Ashes | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:50:07

Welcome to this episode of the Space Game Junkie Podcast my friends! This week, Jim, Hunter, newly-minted co-host Spaz and I sit down with Mike (or MjnMixael as he’s known online) to talk about his extensive Freespace 2 total conversion mod continuation thing, Between the Ashes. We talk to Mike for a while about the history of the mod, how he got involved with it, the ins and outs of Freespace Open editing, the community and a lot more. It all goes great for an hour or so…and then my Internet decides to take a dump on the bed, and the stream just has problem after problem. So while I was focused on trying to fix the stream, everyone else had a great conversation, which you can totally hear the entirety of in the audio version of the show. :) I apologize profusely for the technical issues, and plan to spend time this very evening trying to diagnose and fix the issue. I hope it doesn’t get in the way of your enjoyment of this episode, though. :) Next week on the show, we’ll be welcoming on the developer of the spacey procedural real time strategy game, Empyrean Frontier! As always, if you have any questions or comments, please feel to drop them below, email us at hail@spacegamejunkie.com or hit us up on the forums.  SGJ Podcast #201 – The Dogfighting Kings of the Kill | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 2:05:57

Hey friends, welcome to the two hundredth and first (wow) episode of the Space Game Junkie Podcast! This week, Jim, Hunter, Spaz and I welcome friend of the show Rogelio Martinez to discuss a topic he suggested: why TIE Fighter and Freespace 2 are still the best dogfighting game roughly two decades after their respective releases. Rogelio is working on his own dogfighting space game, so he wanted to talk about what mechanically makes these two games so special. We talked about other games too (with a side trip to VR land), but we covered a lot of ground. So much so we realized how much ground there IS to cover, and will likely revisit this topic in a little while. These two games still engender a lot of love, as you can tell in the way we talk about them. Next week on the show, we’ll be welcoming the lead person on the really-impressive Freespace 2 mod/total conversion, Between the Ashes: Slaves of Chaos, which will also be next week’s game of the week! ;) As always, if you have a question or comment about the show, feel free to drop them below, email us at hail@spacegamejunkie.com or hit us up on the forums.  SGJ Podcast #200 – A Critical Look at the Genre | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 2:07:52

Welcome to the 200th episode of the Space Game Junkie Podcast my friends! Wow, 200 of these here things. I can barely believe it. This week, Jim, Hunter, Spaz and I step back and give this genre a critical look see. While we’re all super duper happy that we have a vibrant space game genre again, with new games coming and many released over the last couple of years, the genre isn’t without its issues. We look at where the genre seems to be problematic, where it’s really thriving, what it could be doing better and more. It makes for a lively discussion when we’re not having Internet issues (again). Next week on the show, we’ll be talking on a user-requested topic. User rmtz from the Discord asked us to talk about why we think — from a mechanical standpoint — that Freespace 2 and TIE Fighter are still the kings of the space dogfighting hill. It should be a fun show, so do stop by! As always, if you have a question or comment, you can drop them below,  email us at hail@spacegamejunkie.com or hit us up on the forums. Thanks for watching/listening! PS. Don’t forget we also still have a contest running!  SGJ Podcast #199 – Starfleet Academy | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 2:15:39

Welcome to this last 100s episode of the Space Game Junkie Podcast my friends! This week, Jim, Hunter (who is away on vacation) Spaz and I sit down to look at the “classic” space combat game, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. I came up with the idea for this topic because, usually when we look at classic games like this, we look at games we like, so I figured it’s time we looked at one we clearly didn’t. We then used Starfleet Academy to springboard into Star Trek gaming in general. The overall impression we came away with is that Star Trek gaming is mostly a giant pile of wasted potential with a few gems mixed in, which is just sad, because Trek gamers deserve way, way better. You can tell we’re also passionate about it because this ended up being one of our longest shows. Wow! I hope that, regardless of the length, you do enjoy it. :) Next week on the show will be episode 200! Wow, 200 of these things! I figured, therefore, it would be a great time to take a critical and clinical look at the genre we love so much and how it’s doing. What could it be doing better, what it’s excelling at, that sort of thing. It should make for a lively debate! The contest runs for a few more weeks, so get on it! Every ten entries adds another winner, so ten entries will yield one winner, twenty entries, two winners, etc. As always, if you have a question or comment, drop them below, email us at hail@spacegamejunkie.com or hit us up on the forums. Thanks so much for watching and/or listening, and enjoy the show!  SGJ Podcast #198 – Skywanderers | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:49:08

Welcome to episode 198 of the SJG podcast my friends! This week, Jim (sadly he was ill and couldn’t join us), Hunter and I sit down with Francois (tsunamayo) and Ray (Raiben), developer and faction designer respectfully of the upcoming building and exploration game, Skywanderers! I knew a little bit about the game going in, but little did I know just how awesome is the plan for it. Beyond the aforementioned building aspect of the game, it’s also primarily focused on exploration, which I am SUPER KEEN on. It was a very lively discussion in which, by the end, my excitement for the game was ramped up tenfold. It was an awesome show, I think. Next week on the show, we’re gonna do a game-focused show that will hopefully open us up to a larger topic. One of my least favorite Star Trek games is Starfleet Academy, as I feel it encompasses everything that’s wrong about Star Trek gaming in one game. Well, we’ll talk about that game, what much of Star Trek gaming gets wrong, and what it needs to do to get it right. The contest runs for a few more weeks, so get on it!  SGJ Podcast #197 – Game Mechanics | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:45:18

Welcome to the podcast this week folks! Let me start off by, AGAIN, apologizing for technical issues we had. Discord was NOT happy and my PC HATES Space Engineers so it was basically a recipe for fuckery. EVEN THOUGH I used the record button on my mixer, something about Space Engineers caused it to crash, so I had to rip the audio from YouTube again. Hopefully this won’t happen again. This week, Jim, Hunter and I talk game mechanics. This includes crafting, progression, role playing, stats and much more. We focus a lot on Space Engineers, since it’s the game that got Hunter thinking on this topic in the first place, but as you can see from the list below, we talk about a loooooot of stuff. Sadly, while it was fun, it kinda hammered the point home that we shouldn’t play a game live while doing this anymore. It’s just too distracting. Beyond that, it was a pretty fun show, and we hope you enjoy it. The contest runs for a few more weeks, so get on it! Every ten entries adds another winner, so ten entries will yield one winner, twenty entries, two winners, etc. Next week on the show, we welcome the developer of Skywanderers! If you have any comments or questions on the show, please drop them below, email us at hail@spacegamejunkie.com or hit us up on the forums. Show Notes Games Mentioned * Space Engineers * The Division * Zelda * Skyrim * Elite: Dangerous * Mass Effect: Andromeda * Dragon Age: Inquisition * World of Warcraft * STALKER * Rainbow Six: Vegas * ARK * Conan Exiles * Star Citizen * Anarchy Online * Lord of the Rings Online * Dual Universe * EVE Online * Subnautica * Dragon Quest Builders

SGJ Podcast #196 – The Flight Sim Show | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 2:09:38

Welcome to this week’s podcast my friends! This week, Jim, Hunter and I bring back on our friend, Chase “Scharmers” Dahl — formerly of the Flight Sim Follies and a bunch of other stuff — to talk shop with us. I invited him on because, other than another gentleman who sadly couldn’t join us, I consider him one of the luminaries of flight sim history. This is because this week, we took a break from space games to talk another passion of ours, flight sims! We’re massive fans of flight sims going all the way back to the 80s, so as you can see from the list below, we have a tooooohooooohooon to talk about. And talk we do, as we’re all very passionate about the subject, so we cover a ton of ground. We hope you enjoy this little break from space games. Honestly we had so much fun with it we’ll likely do another topic show like it, next time on mecha games. :) Don’t forget we also still have a contest running! The contest runs for a few more weeks, so get on it! Every ten entries adds another winner, so ten entries will yield one winner, twenty entries, two winners, etc. Next week on the show…I honestly don’t know yet. I’ve invited a guest and saved a space for them, but nothing’s been confirmed yet, so it’s still up in the air! Whatever we do, we’ll make it fun! As always, if you have a question or comment about the show, drop them in the comments below, email us at hail@spacegamejunkie.com or hit us up on the forums.  SGJ Podcast #195 – Lightspeed Frontier | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:45:54

Welcome to this week’s episode of the Space Game Junkie Podcast y’all! This week, Jim, Hunter and I sit down with Philip Devine, Owner of Riveted Games, to talk about their upcoming shooty buildy blocky game, Lightspeed Frontier. A couple of things about this show. First, due to a technical issue on my end (which was so stupid, and explained here), I once again had to rip the audio from YouTube, but it sounds okay on my end at least, so whew. Secondly, Daylight Savings Time ALWAYS messes with me, so I am a biiiiiiiiit loopy for this show. Regardless, we have a great time talking to Phillip about his current game, his last game, moving on from development to project management and much more. It’s a really sun show, so I hope you enjoy it. The contest runs for a few more weeks, so get on it! Every ten entries adds another winner, so ten entries will yield one winner, twenty entries, two winners, etc. Next week on the show, we’re FINALLY gonna have that flight sim show I’ve been threatening y’all with. It’s not space games, sure, but it’s something we’re all so dang passionate about that I hope our exuberance makes up for it. ;) As always, if you have a comment or question, please drop it below, email us at hail@spacegamejunkie.com or hit us up on the forums. Welcome to this episode of the Space Game Junkie Podcast y’all! This week I (sadly sans Hunter and Jim since it was a morning show) talk to some folks at THQ Nordic about their work on recent space games such as Nexus and Imperium Galactica. Joining me are Reinhard Pollice, Business and Product Development Director at THQ Nordic and, as a nice surprise, Balazs Vasvari, former Lead Programmer at Digital Reality who worked on both the original and newly-remastered version of Imperium Galactica 2: Alliances. While we talk a lot about the aforementioned space games, we also talk about other properties THQ Nordic has taken on lately, like the entire (and amazing) Novalogic catalog. It’s a really fun and enlightening discussion that I wish could’ve gone on for longer. Also, I say this in the audio, but I wanna apologize for the quality of this episode. I forgot to hit record on my mixer, so the audio was ripped from YouTube, and isn’t awesome. Sorry about that. I hope that, irregardless of this, you still enjoy the show. Don’t forget we also still have a contest running! If you leave us a (hopefully positive) review on iTunes, you’ll be entered for a chance to win one of the many game codes I have, from the entire Wing Commander series on GOG to all of the X-Wing games on Steam. Welcome to this episode of the Space Game Junkie Podcast my friends! This week, Jim, Hunter and I bring on friend-of-the-show Travis (known as “Khronoe” on our Discord server) to talk about the gaming phenomenon known as “grind”. This came up during last week’s Jumpgate stream, wherein we discussed grind in games and why, to me, Jumpgate is better in the grind department than, say Elite: Dangerous (which comes up a lot in this episode. We discuss the upsides and downsides of grind, which games we feel embody the concept of grind and much more. It’s a lengthy and lively discussion. Next week on the show, it’s an early show as our guest is in Vienna, Austria. Join us as we talk to the folks at THQ Nordic about their work on classic space games Nexus, Imperium Galactica and more! Finally, we’re launching a contest. If you leave us a (hopefully positive) review on iTunes, you’ll be entered for a chance to win one of the many game codes I have, from the entire Wing Commander series on GOG to all of the X-Wing games on Steam.  SGJ Podcast #192 – Conquest: Frontier Wars | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:18:20

Hey friends, welcome to the Space Game Junkie Podcast (again, a little late, sorry, the week got away from me). This week, Jim, Hunter and I welcome back Director of Fun at Descendent Studios, Eric Peterson, to talk mostly about one of the finest space RTS games you’ll ever play, Conquest: Frontier Wars. We also talk some Descent: Underground and Starlancer as well, of course, but much of our topic is on this favorite-of-mine strategy game. We learn a lot about its history regarding not only its development, but it’s troubled publishing as well (thanks UbiSoft). Overall, it’s a really fun time, and we hope you enjoy it. Next week on the show…I’m not 100% yet, honestly. I had a topic show on flight sims scheduled for later in March, but since next week was opened I moved it up. HOWEVER I forgot that I invited a friend to join us on the original date for the flight sim show, so I might move it back. We’ll see. It’ll be a fun show whatever we do, and we hope you join us next week for whatever it is. As always, if you have a question or comment, you can drop it below, email us at hail@spacegamejunkie.com or hit us up on the forums.
