Mary Lee gives tips to round out the meal witsandwiches and other fixings. Soup includes onions, turkey bones, and water. Get your pencils ready for the full list of ingredients, and cooking instructions. Remove bones, and add in rice and diced leftover turkey, and of course some Pet milk. The rift between grandpap an Lum is settled… more or less. Today we find Lum composing a letter to request a book. Is it a story that stole from Little Red Riding Hood? Abner’s imagination runs wild, and wonders if a wolf is involved. Can he hire little Red to work in the store? Lum hasn’t been much help lately. Abner proceeds to tell the story in his own words, but Lum tries to tell him his letter has nothing to do with that. He’s interested in a book about joining the navy, especially a new branch that’s being formed up. It’s a new outfit called the Waves. Does he meet the age restrictions? He’s older than 45, the maximum for being an officer. The many jobs include * Control Tower Operator. Can Lum direct big bombers? * Radio Operator, which also includes decyphering codes, but Lum figures it’s mostly about operating radios. He may even take his own radio to be sure he can run it * Heliographer Mate. It has something to do with the weather. Between the almanac, and his corns, Lum ought to do well. As the gents get excited about the pay and uniforms, a phone call reveals that the Waves is the new branch just for girls to join.

Bob “Camp Hahn” Hope tries out a couple different openings for this rehearsal preview. He tells about his big reception to the base. Located in the desert, jokes about the heat are added to those on KP, military life, artillery, and more. Bob jokes about the draft, doctors, physical exams, Skinny Ennis, and even Valentinees day gets in the mix. Francis Langford sings, Bluebirds Over the White Cliffs of Dover. Bob recaps his reception to the base, and Francis shares secrets about what the officers really think of him. . What does she think of Bob’s physique? Betty Hutton joins the fun to talk about being on base. The girls talk about their dates at the dance. Bob claims to have been in the military, and the girls try to guess his rank. The topic of Valentines returns. Bob puts on a sketch where he’s a young soldier who calls on Betty. He brings gifts of broccoli and is looking good in his new haircut. Priorities, and shortages make the jokes. Dating, food, necking, are topics. Contrast that scene with one of an old soldier, calling on his long time gal, Francis. The creaky old couple sit in their rocking chairs, and talk about old times. Will the oldsters get a little frisky? Betty Hutton sings, Big Foot Pete. Turning to another page in the life of Bob Hope, jokes about family, joining the Army, military discipline, and life in the field. Machine guns, craps games, maneuvers, inspections, and more get the sketch kicked off. Skinny Ennis joins the jokes about military life. Jerry Colonna is one of the toughest officers in the Army, and throws his weight around with Bob and Skinny. The men get ready to march as they train. Will the guys get lost in the woods? A last moment clothing drive is organized, and Connie Brooks tells her landlady, Mrs Davis about the plan. Connie does the favor of holding shopping money for Mrs Davis, promising to pick up some last minute gifts for her. At school, she manages to get volunteered to do shopping for everyone she meets, and holds their money. Clothes are gathered, as Connie chats with Mr Boynton. For safe keeping, Connie places the envelope of cash into the pocket of Mr Conklins donated suit while she takes care of stitching up some holes in Boynton pockets in the Home Economics lab. Finding the clothes, and cash gone, Connie sets about to track them down, and talks with Mr Conklin. Holding to a charitable ethic, Conklin refuses to recall the delivery of clothes, and won’t hear any excuse… until his wife tells him she left valuable pearls in the pocket of his donated jacket. Racing to the distribution point, its too late. Connie, Boynton, and Conklin spot the suit. Can they convince the man wearing it to exchange it back to them? Will Connie get her money? Will Conklin get back his jewelry? Only after some desperate measures.

Phil plays, Make With the Kisses. The argument over gambling, and being a poor sport continues. Don has written another of his one act plays to pitch the sponsor. Set in the North Pole, Santa Jack and Mary respond to letters from good little boys, Phil and Rochester. As Jack and Mary get ready to leave, Dennis arrives to sing, Tomorrow Night. In the crowded department store, Jack and Mary stay close. What kind of items are on Jack’s shopping list? Mary leaves Jack to deal with a saleslady about a clock. Just how tough are those watches? Mary does her own arguing with the lady in the stockings department. The gruff perfume salesman seems out of place for his product. Rochester is spied on as he buys his boss a gift. Note: The floor walker is one of Jack’s writers, a part that would later be played by Frank Nelson. The perfume salesman is the person who played Dynamite Dugan in the football mystery from two weeks ago. He would often come back to reprise the role.

What can Phil get for a person who has it all? Alice already has a vacuum and an ironing board. Will Phil pick up on her subtle hints that she’d really like a new car? She would even like some little trinket, as long as it was expensive. Remley’s gift for Phil is more on the practical side. Alice sings, It’s a Lovely Day. Where did Frankie get those practical gifts? If Phil claims the money is for a good cause, like an operation for Frankie, will she loan Phil money for Christmas shopping? I don’t think she fell for it, and may have her own scheme brewing. Phil sings his top hit of the year, the Thing. The shopping spree leads Phil into a gift that Alice wants. The upscale boutique is too much, and Phil leaves. Will he find a better deal with Grogan? How does his shoplifting business help humanity? The helpful Grogan leaves Phil holding the bag and stolen silver. Can he put it back unnoticed? Not when Julius enters. After the show, Phil receives an award from disk jockeys.

If he only had a lawyer. If he only knew what was plotted against him. Suspicions, paranoia, and pacing the floor finally hit the pressure point. Braving the world, and taking the chance, Gildy dons a disguise, and visits Peavey. Will there be any news for him to learn down at Floyd’s barber shop? Coming clean to Floyd, so Gildy can borrow a cab that he’s storing, Gildy is forced to spill a few beans. He has to fend off fares while snooping on Miss Del Rey’s house. Disguising his voice, and milking her for information, there isn’t much to learn… but does his disguise fool the Spanish dance teacher?

Luigi writes home to his mama to tell her about the strange custom of Americans to migrate from their houses to department stores. His friend Pasquali comes over to drop hints about getting him something special for Christmas. When Luigi rushes out for his English class he drops an envelop with his Christmas shopping list in it, along with all his shopping money. Pasquali sneaks a peek, and is upset to see that he isn’t on Luigi’s list. In the English class where gifts are exchanged, Luigi offers hints of his special gift for Pasquali. What can it be? Suddenly realizing he lost his envelope, Luigi is in distress over it. Pasquali pretends to not know what happened to the cash, and gives Luigi the cold shoulder. Will Luigi be in trouble with his classmates if he regifts his expensive and engraved fountain pen to Pasquali? Being put on the spot, Luigi tells exactly what his special gift to Pasquali was supposed to be, and Pasquali suddenly feels like a heel. Christmas wishes have a way of working out, and Pasquali gets his gift anyway. Now how can he give back Luigi’s money without looking like a fool?

For the past few days in their new apartment, Sally has noticed a change in Jim. Is he worried over things at the office? Money? Is he mad at her for some reason? Will a visit to her doctor help her find the problem. A shift of focus makes Jim feel less jealous, and soon he’s worried over her. Sally even arranges a little surprise for him. A Skillet dinner is a full meal in a pan. Ground meeat, Pet milk, and rolled oats, Listen, with pencils ready, for all the ingredients, along with mixing and cooking instructions. Don’t forget the potatos, green beans, and the full recipe feed a family of four. Tips for food economy are shared to stretch the meal. Though always an energetic lad, Sherlock’s older brother Mycroft had always been plump and slow. We find Mycroft dealing with word of a spy, in his characteristic laid back way, and planning to solve this mystery without leaving London. Traverse reports on the happenings of the lady spy at the theater. Following his own trail, Sherlock finds his way to the theater with Watson at his side. The stage magician, the Great Gandolfo, carries out an impressive disappearing trick, complete with a disappearing spy as his assistant. Sherlock thinks he has the trick figured out, and demonstrates to Watson after the fact. At a later show, Holmes and Watson watch the stage activities closely, but somethings wrong. The spy has been murdered. Now the police join the observations of the stage, and a race is on to see whether they’ll solve the case before Holmes does. Given the nature of the trick, a twin sister is in grave danger. Will all the loose ends be tied up, or should the aging Sherlock just return to his beekeeping? Has Mycroft figured out the mystery?

Robbery Detail. After tracking a hold up man for months, the cops are ready to make their move. On a cold night in Los Angeles, the night watch get ready to take down the well armed, fortified George Hoffman. The desperate criminal isn’t afraid to make a standoff, rather than be taken to jail again. The shoot out runs its course and yet another criminal is taken into custody. In voiceover, Joe Friday reviews the booking, and preparations for the preliminary hearing. Also the mundane event of a fellow cop, who got a black eye from coaching boxing. Just when it looks to be another routine day, word comes that Hoffman has broken out of jail, and is on the rampage again. The cops discuss the intent to break out from the day Hoffman was taken, and the exercises he did to strengthen his hands. Despite his spree of crime, none of George’s usual contacts, or haunts has any word of where he is located. An interview with toy train enthusiast, Roy Townsend, might offer their first clue. A stakeout is set up, where Ben and Joe make small talk about those toy trains, but months would go by, as Joe later shares in voiceover. Through a weird twist of fate, Hoffman goes straight, joins the Army, and goes overseas…. Or does he? Hoffman has a knack for robbing, and escaping, but Joe may have proved that Hoffman has met his match. Has Hoffman escaped for the last time?

Back in the store, Abner gives Lum a heads up that grandpap[ is looking to tell him something to his face. Lum proceeds to tell Abner about being in disguise, and hired to find himself to blacken his own eye. The comic chase means that he was never quite able to catch up to himself. Cedric even got in on helping, but by the time Lum got his other eye blackened by Cedric, grandpap learned that Killer Smith was really Lum in disguise. Finally, grandpap arrives, and uses Mousey as a go between to interpret his message to Lum. Not wanting to share his interpreter, grandpap makes Abner interpret for Lum. When Mousey sides with grandpap’s plight, he and Abner bicker. Was Lum in the wrong to cut off grandpap’s beard? With the two interpreters bickering, how will Lum communicate Cedric enters and holds the fate of grandpaps message in his hands. Whatever that message may be.
