Advanced Audio Blog #13 - Easter in the Netherlands | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 2:34

Learn Dutch with DutchPod101! Don't forget to stop by DutchPod101.com for more great Dutch Language Learning Resources! ----Formal English---- Pasen—Easter in the Netherlands There are many similarities in how the Dutch and Americans celebrate Easter, but there are also quite a few differences. For example, in the United States, Good Friday is also considered by many to be a holiday, but the Dutch observe Easter Sunday and Easter Monday. Dutch children also celebrate Easter by decorating Easter eggs and attending Easter egg hunts. The Easter meal is usually a brunch held on Easter Sunday, and the Dutch usually decorate willow branches by hanging chocolate eggs and other ornaments on them. The Easter season starts on Fast Eve, also known as Carnival Day, which is the day before the start of Lent. Carnival Day is the one day a year when people in the Netherlands feel obliged to act as foolishly as they want to. The Dutch also hold a lot of dances for Carnival day and elect a prince of each town's carnival. In the Netherlands, the Easter egg tradition really starts with Palm Sunday, which is the Sunday before Easter Sunday. This is the day that children traditionally go to local farms to collect eggs for Easter. They carry a palm branch that's decorated and that supposedly helps them locate the eggs. After a day of feasting on sweet breads, chocolate eggs, and smoked salmon and eel, the Dutch usually enjoy a day of egg games on Easter Monday. This is the day when the Easter egg hunts are held, rather than in advance like they are in the United States. Older children also participate in contests to crack eggs. --------------------------- Learn Dutch with DutchPod101! Learn Dutch with DutchPod101! Don't forget to stop by DutchPod101.com for more great Dutch Language Learning Resources! ----Formal English---- Kerstfeest—Christmas in the Netherlands Kerstfeest, which is essentially Christmas in the Netherlands, is actually quite a bit different than the Christmas celebrated in the United States. Of course for us the holiday spirit does usually start right around Thanksgiving, which makes the Christmas season last about a month long, but the Dutch have a completely different way of celebrating. Like in the United States, Kerstfeest celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ. However, the Dutch celebrate it for two whole days, the 25th and 26th of December. Santa Claus has his own holiday, which is kept separate from Kerstfeest and is celebrated on December 5th, although the actual holiday is on the 6th. In the Netherlands, this day is called Sinterklaas, or Saint Nicholas Day. This is the day when children in the Netherlands actually receive most of their presents, and Kerstfeest itself is left to focus just on the birth of Jesus Christ. Like in the United States, Kerstfeest involves celebration with glass ball ornaments, ribbons, bells, candles, and other types of decorations and adornments Americans typically expect to see around Christmas in the United States. The Dutch also put up Christmas trees and hang up garlands and lights. In the United States, Americans use red and green as the primary Christmas colors, but for Kerstfeest, green, red, silver, gold, and white are all used widely. Kerstfeest is celebrated with the family, and some Dutch families go to church late at night on the 25th of December. Others stay home and just relax rather than going to church. Of course everyone has to eat on Kerstfeest, and the holiday is largely celebrated with a large grilled feast o [...]
