Learn Italian with ItalianPod101! Don't forget to stop by ItalianPod101.com for more great Italian Language Learning Resources! Davide: I gladiatori in Inghilterra... Claudia e Irene: Ah, ah, ah. ----Formal English---- (Jingle for TV news) Davide: Hey, girls, silence please, I'd like to hear the TV news. Irene: Come on, so boring! Announcer: A cemetery for Roman gladiators has been discovered in York, England. The experts ascertained that the skeletons belong to young and strong men. These men also have the muscle of the right arm more developed, a typical feature of slaves trained as gladiators. Furthermore, marks from bites of large animals have been also discovered. The presence of gladiators in York is plausible, as this city was one of the most important Roman colonies in England. In fact, the legions remained here until the fifth century A.D. The aristocratic class of that time surely had the opportunity to be entertained by attending circus games in the arena. Davide: Gladiators in England... Who knows whether they were used to go to the pub at the end of the day? Claudia and Irene: Ah, ah, ah. --------------------------- Learn Italian with ItalianPod101! Tiziano: … tanto per cambiare. ----Formal English---- Olga: So last night did you go to that osteria? Learn Italian with ItalianPod101! Don't forget to stop by ItalianPod101.com for more great Italian Language Learning Resources! -------Lesson Dialog------- ----Formal ---- Bianco Natale Quanto è importante il Natale in Italia? Tantissimo!! ----Formal English---- White Christmas How important is Christmas in Italy? A lot!! Cities change, with new lights and colours. In the house we dust-off different things taken from the basement. At school kids peform school plays and theme songs. The so called “rush for the presents” has probably left aside the real meaning of Christmas, in other words a celebration to feel close to the family. However Christmas is tradition and Christmas’ traditions, for example the lunch menu, vary greatly from region to region. There are obviously also some common habits throughout Italy. First of all we make the Christmas tree, usually on the December eighth, and we put some Christmas decorations on the house door. Next there is the Christmas crèche, but recently this isn’t done in all Italian houses. In several cities the nativity scene is performed by real people. Being Italy a Catholic country, many people worship during the Christmas Eve’s night. On Christmas day the national channel broadcasts the mass from Vatican on TV. When celebrating some families prefer to organize a dinner during the Christmas Eve, some others the lunch on the 25th. Concerning typical products, there are some that are eaten throughout the Peninsula, mainly sweets, such as panettone, pandoro and torrone, but also dry fruits. In supermarkets you will find a lot of bargain sales for bottles of spumante during the Christmas period, because this is the wine with whom we toast! To spend some time together after lunch or dinner in many houses we play tombola or cards. Besides, there is the famous saying “Christmas with your parents, Easter with whoever you want!” --------------------------- Learn Italian with ItalianPod101! Torno subito! Valeria: Forse non gli piacciono i vegetariani... Tiziano: Sorvoliamo! ----Formal English---- Valeria: What a beautiful, quaint place! Waiter: Good evening, sirs, here is the menu! Valeria: Thank you. What do you recommend for us? Waiter: Obviously the beer; it is made by us according to the traditional recipe. Tiziano: I am vegetarian, so I will have only a beer, some bread, and a salad. Valeria: I will have a classic from the Alto Adige instead—"canederli" with speck ham, and a beer on draft. Waiter: Excellent choice. The beer gets a special aroma when it's combined with a dish of meat. I'll be back soon! Valeria: Maybe he doesn't like vegetarians....
