"Target-Covered" is a reference to the array of political and corporate interests trying to harness adolescent angst for their own purposes. And yes, "Teens" is in the title, but this is a conversation for everyone. Jim and I will begin by discussing the 20th century history of this problem, through the work of Edward Bernays, the father of public relations. In his book Propaganda, Bernays wrote "The conscious and intelligent manipulation of the organized habits and opinions of the masses is an important element in democratic society. Those who manipulate this unseen mechanism of society constitute an invisible government which is the true ruling power of our country. We are governed, our minds are molded, our tastes formed, and our ideas suggested, largely by men we have never heard of…. It is they who pull the wires that control the public mind." This leads us to questions we'd love young people to ask themselves: - Have you ever stopped to reflect on how you became who you are? To question your values, beliefs, where they came from? - Once you stop to think about it, is that what you really want? Or who you really are? We'll then cover several self-exploration exercises, including a values assessment from Test Drive Your Future, DISC styles, Love Languages Branden's The Art of Self Discovery, and Peterson's Self-Authoring program. Dan Sanchez is the Director of Content at the Foundation for Economic Education (FEE) and the editor-in-chief of FEE.org. Dan is also the main writing coach for our friends at Praxis. He joins me today for a fresh take on a familiar problem: young people are drowning and purposelessness, searching for meaning. Political operators, tech giants, and disingenuous marketers are happy to tap into that desire and angst for their own exploitative purposes, offering young people a pre-packaged "why." John Taylor Gatto said “Whatever an education is, it should make you a unique individual, not a conformist; it should furnish you with an original spirit with which to tackle the big challenges; it should allow you to find values which will be your roadmap through life; it should make you spiritually rich, a person who loves whatever you are doing, wherever you are, whomever you are with; it should teach you what is important, how to live and how to die.” Instead schools are teaching dependence. And schools are producing mobs. Students are not given adequate encouragement in authoring their own lives, with too many of them surrendering to the K-12 to college to work pipeline. Along the way, they're handed causes to embrace without question, and thus made useful to various manipulators who don't care about them. Dan and I discuss how these young people can find their way, to rebuild their rudders and develop their own “why." Dan offers advice to both parents and educators. Zak Slayback returns to the Studio of Champ-Yinz to share his insights on the benefits of interpersonal and intra-personal systems of accountability. Zak suggests that when many of us run into different forms of unproductive friction, we should consider a reappearing lack of self-knowledge as the cause.
