Beauty Island show

Beauty Island

Summary: Beauty Island tells stories of memories sparked by beauty products. Host Brittany Stewart gets inside the minds (and beauty cabinets) of well-known figures inside and outside the beauty industry. Each episode, guests will be asked to share the eight beauty products that have a special meaning to them. Maybe it's the lipstick their mum used to apply on a night out, the first beauty product they ever bought themselves, or the perfume that instantly brings back memories of a special occasion. We'll discover more about their career, relationships, family, challenges and everything in between, bookmarked by the beauty products that have helped shape their lives. It's a celebration of life - and lipstick.

We're a finalist for 'Best new Podcaster' at the Australian Podcast Awards. (Woo!) Hello and welcome to Beauty Island, the beauty podcast that celebrates life and lipstick. I'm your host, beauty journalist, Brittany Stewart, and each episode I sit down with a guest to ask them about the 8 beauty products that have a special memory or meaning for them, that they'd take to a desert island, or Beauty Island, that I am sending them off too. Along the way we find out more about their life, career and the people and events that have shaped them into who they are today. Today my guest is Founder of Bondi-based natural fragrance house Recreation Beauty and former Cosmo and Cleo editor, Nedahl Stelio. We talk about her obsession with glitter working as a beauty editor at Girlfriend magazine, the surprising rules (or lack of) that exist when it comes to disclosing fragrance ingredients, how her struggle to get pregnant led her to natural beauty and the $19.95 drugstore mascara she loves. Plus, because it's so natural beauty focussed, this episode includes her Five Faves - some of the makeup in her bag she's loving at the minute. Love Beauty Island? Please subscribe, rate and review!  BONUS: Five Favs - Sharon Farrell | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:09:16

Yes, it's another mini bonus episode of Beauty Island #FiveFavs! I love hearing the products my guests in Beauty Island main episodes pick for the nostalgic, personal and often very relatable stories behind them. But I've had a few comments from you saying you'd ALSO love to know the products that Beauty Island castaways are using on their faces now. And because I listen and take on all your great feedback, Five Favs was born! It's a bitesize episode where, in a quick-fire round, I ask my guests about their five favourite beauty products from a specific category, like foundation or eye product. Then, there'll also be a piece of wisdom shared - a thoughtful answer to a relevant question about anything from self-esteem to social media. For this episode of Five Favs, I have my guest from earlier this week, makeup artist, YouTuber, and founder of the Online Makeup School, Sharon Farrell. Starting on the Benefit counter of her home in Ireland, Sharon started her YouTube channel in 2010. Now, she's had over 35 million video views, over a quarter of a million youtube subscribers, and a very gorgeous baby, Roisin. She shares her five favourite products, including the smokey-eye mascara that doesn't budge. She also shares her thoughts on the "drama" that dominates the YouTube scene. I hope you enjoy.  Sharon Farrell - Makeup Artist, YouTuber, Founder of Online Makeup School | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:51:46

Ever cut a fringe and regretted it? Step right this way... Hello and welcome to Beauty Island, the beauty podcast that celebrates life and lipstick. Today my guest is Makeup Artist and YouTuber, Sharon Farrell. Starting on the Benefit counter of her home in Ireland, Sharon started her YouTube channel in 2010. Now, she's had over 35 million video views, over a quarter of a million youtube subscribers, and has just launched her very own Online Makeup School. If you've ever felt overwhelmed or intimidated by the makeup on beauty youTube videos and assumed knowledge they can often make, then you might be very interested to learn more about it. In this episode, Sharon gives real insight into the world of working as a YouTuber including the steady growth of success over almost a decade rather than (as we keep coming back to) being an overnight success, knowing her husband was the one from the first date (after dodging his calls for a few weeks!) , her post-baby crisis decision of cutting a fringe, and the cheapo cleanser that stops all her breakouts. Since we spoke, The Online Makeup School has properly launched offering thorough, easy-to-understand and follow tutorials across a range of subjects for a super affordable price - some from $20 to the most comprehensive at $200. This is not sponsored or I haven't been asked to spruik this, but I think it's such a good and valuable resource and there's also a discount available at the moment too, so it's worth checking out if it's of interest.  BONUS: Five Favs - Maria Hatzistefanis | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:07:46

Want to know the J-Lo- approved face mask? Listen on... Hello! I'm Brittany Stewart, beauty journalist and you are listening to another bonus Beauty Island episode of Five Favs. In the main episodes, as you might know by now, I sit down with an interesting guest to find out the eight beauty products they'd take with to a desert island, ones that aren't necessarily practical but have special memories or meaning for them. I love hearing those picks for the nostalgic, personal and often very relatable stories behind them. But, I've had a few comments from you saying you'd also love to know the products that Beauty Island castaways are using on their faces now. So Five Favs was born, a bitesize episode where in a quickfire round I ask my guests about their five favourite beauty products from a specific category, like foundation or eye product. So yes, I really do read all your reviews and feedback! This time, it's the best travel beauty tips and product recommendations from Maria Hatzistefanis, the founder of Rodial and Nip + Fab, the beauty brands beloved by everyone from Cameron Diaz and Ellie Goulding to Kylie Jenner. She's also the author and podcast host of How To Be An Overnight Success. She talks the budget purple shampoo that gives her just-come-from the hairdresser worthy hair, and the Jennifer Lopez-approved mask she uses to rescue dull, jet-lagged skin.  Maria Hatzistefanis - Founder, Rodial and Nip + Fab, Bestselling Author and Podcast Host, How To Be An Overnight Success | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:48:23

What does it really take to be an overnight success? My guest today knows all too well. Welcome to Beauty Island, the beauty podcast that celebrates life and lipstick. I'm your host, beauty journalist, Brittany Stewart, and each episode I sit down with a guest to ask them about the 8 beauty products that have a special memory or meaning for them, that they'd take to a desert island, or Beauty Island, that I am sending them off too. Now this doesn't necessarily mean practical products. Rather it's the beauty products they've come across throughout their lives that carry significant stories or memories for them. Think the product that reminds them of their mum, the beauty product that defined their teens or the perfume that instantly sparks a memory of a special place or person. Along the way we find out more about their life, career and the people and events that have shaped them into who they are today. Today my guest is Maria Hatzistefanis. She's the founder of Rodial and Nip + Fab, bestselling author of How To Be An Overnight Success, host of the fantastic podcast, Overnight Success, and her personal Instagram account has over one million followers. Her own overnight success has taken, well, many years. Being fired from her job in banking and financing turned out to be a blessing in disguise - it was the catalyst for founding high-end beauty brand Rodial, which counts Cameron Diaz, Emma Stone and Jennifer Lopez amongst it's celebrity fans, and is now sold in 20,000 stores in 35 countries. But it took self-funding after she couldn't get investment, five years of hustle, one big risk, and a bottle of snake serum to really take off. Nip + Fab gave Kylie Jenner her first beauty campaign - and the next year she went on to launch Kylie Cosmetics. Coincidence? You decide... We talk about her beginnings growing up on a remote Greek Island, the reality of being an overnight success, her incredibly honest advice on balancing being a parent and running a successful business that every parent needs to hear, the power of eyebrows and the $35 exfoliating face pads that will change your life - I can personally vouch for them too! Former Health, Beauty and Style Editor of Mamamia, among many other roles, as a freelance writer and social media consultant, her work has been published in the Sydney Morning Herald, news.com.au, Cosmopolitan, and body & soul, to name just a few. We talk about adult acne, why motherhood has made her even more ambitious, the difference between AHAs and BHAs (and what the hell they are!) and why, for god's sake, you should stop shaking your hairdresser when you use it. We talk about her childhood in Ireland, moving to Australia with an (ex) boyfriend, the sad circumstances that led to her starting her first beauty blog, meeting Rihanna, her thoughts on influencers that sell out and her bold move regarding the waste involved with PR packages - did it pay off? Michelle is also so open in talking about how her attitude to exercise and loving herself has changed over the last few years - I found this really inspiring - and recently being diagnosed with ADHD. It's raw, honest and hopefully a conversation you find helpful. If you love Michelle's beauty content, you'll love getting to know her even better.  Sarah Tarca - Beauty Editor, Former Editor of Girlfriend, Beauty Director of Marie Claire Australia | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:56:01

Religiously read Girlfriend magazine as a teen? You're about to fan girl with this week's guest, Sarah Tarca. Hello and welcome to Beauty Island, the beauty podcast that celebrates life and lipstick. I'm your host, beauty journalist, Brittany Stewart, and each episode I sit down with a guest to ask them about the 8 beauty products that have a special memory or meaning for them, that they'd take to a desert island, or Beauty Island, that I am sending them off too. Along the way we find out more and their life, career and the people and events that have shaped them into who they are today. Today I'm talking to editor Sarah Tarca. Chances are if you picked up a magazine in the last 10 years, you've probably read her work. And, if like me, as a teen you were a regular reader of Girlfriend magazine, then you'll recognise her immediately, as the beauty editor and later editor of the iconic Aussie youth magazine. She later became the Beauty Director of Marie Claire before making the incredible decision in her thirties to pack up her life and travel the world with her boyfriend, indefinitely. This wasn't traditional backpacking holiday though - the pair became digital nomads, working and travelling around the globe. That was about two and a half years. As I sit down with Sarah today a few things have changed - boyfriend now fiance and the proud parents of gorgeous three month old Yuki. We talked about the lengths she went to chase her dream job, what she learnt packing it all in to go from beauty editor to backpacker, the power of teen mags and how it's changed and why a red lip is more than just a statement - it can be a lifeline. One more thing. Reaching out and meeting Sarah was a special moment for me. You see, as a 13 year old from the UK, just moved to Australia - same language but totally foreign in almost every other respect, I was one of those teens for which mags like Girlfriend were a saviour. It was a window into what Aussie teens were watching, wearing, talking about. It gave me common ground and it helped me belong, and I don't know how many issues I religiously read Sarah's beauty columns in. I hope you enjoy.  Kate Morris - Founder, Adore Beauty | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:52:11

Kate Morris was just 21 when she had her million dollar idea - Australia's first online beauty e-commerce site, Adore Beauty. On this episode, discover how she did it and her own journey through beauty. This doesn't necessarily mean practical products but rather the beauty products they've come across throughout their lives that carry significant stories, power or nostalgia for them. The ones that make up a little bit of who they are. Along the way we find out more and their life, career and the people and events that have shaped them into who they are today. Today my guest is Kate Morris, founder of online beauty retailer, Adore Beauty. At a time when we're obsessed with lady bosses - a controversial term we do talk about in this episode - on paper Kate seems like the ultimate one in a million entrepreneur. And in a way she is - at just 21 years old, not yet graduated from uni, while she was working on the Clarins beauty counter in a department store she realised that there were better and more enjoyable ways customers were looking for to buy their beauty products. Online. Except it was 1999 and it just wasn't a thing that was done in Australia. Kate went for it and nearly 20 years later Adore Beauty stocks established and emerging beauty brands like Dermalogica, Bobbi Brown, The Ordinary, Salt by Hendrix and Iconic London. But there's so much more to her story. Like how she almost threw in the towel in the first year, the hard work you often don't see shown on social media, the industry recognition that took a decade and Estee Lauder who said no to being stocked on the site for 14 years. I sat down with Kate in Adore Beauty's Melbourne offices - and the first thing I noticed was how at 6pm on a Monday we were the only two there. You'll find out the excellent reason why when we chat about work life balance. We also talked about how the beauty industry reacted towards a 21 year old from Tasmania trying to revolutionise the industry (spoiler: not well initially), the $19 multi-purpose balm she takes absolutely everywhere with her, and why it's not ideas that are the most important thing but rather actually executing them. She is generous, brilliant and full of incredibly inspiring advice. I hope you enjoy.  Glynis Traill-Nash - Fashion Editor of The Australian | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:00:16

With her glossy cherry red hair, my guest on this week's episode of Beauty Island is instantly recognisable. Glynis Traill-Nash is the Fashion Editor of The Australian, one of Australia's most popular newspapers with a reach of 1.9 million. Her career has spanned a range of magazines and newspapers including Who, Instyle and Grazia, and she's covered numerous local and international fashion weeks. She invited me into her beautifully-styled Sydney apartment - think a green velvet sofa, wall to wall books, a piano and piles of fashion books - to talk about growing up in Perth, moving to London to pursue her love of acting and singing, juggling her passions and talents for jazz and fashion, the perfume that instantly transports her back to performing at the Edinburgh Festival, working in fashion for newspapers compared to magazines, the state of the Australian fashion industry, interviewing Jean Paul Gaultier, her signature red hair, why you'll never catch her in activewear as leisurewear, her vintage YSL collection and why she describes herself as a 'late bloomer'.  Nigel Stanislaus - Celebrity Makeup Artist, Former Makeup Director at Maybelline New York Australia | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:00:59

From sniper (almost!) to international celebrity makeup artist... meet Nigel Stanislaus. Nigel is a makeup artist extraordinaire. He was the Makeup Director for Maybelline New York Australia for over a decade, travelling the world, leading the makeup at local and international Fashion Weeks and working with celebrity clients including Gigi and Bella Hadid, Cindy Crawford, Kendall Jenner, Jess Hart, Ruby ROse, Olivia Newton-John, Melissa George, Sir Bob Geldof and Michael Buble. His work has been published in Elle and L'Officiel, and he's appeared as a judge on Australia's Next Top Model and Asia's Next Top Model. But in his early days, he was told he'd never make it as a makeup artist. He's certainly proved otherwise. As he embarks on his next chapter after finishing with Maybelline earlier this year, we talked about growing up in Singapore, how he almost became a sniper (yes, really!), how he got his break to become Mr Maybelline, all about the jetsetting life (and the reality of it), learning to not let his career define him, his triumphant 'I showed you!' moment, why he thinks we're in the golden age of makeup, his thoughts on ridiculous beauty trend and Instagram makeup, dealing with trolls, the importance of your self-worth and a lot more. Nigel is so candid and funny and an all-round-beautiful human being - and yes, my first male guest on Beauty Island! A quick note on this episode - we live quite far apart so met in the middle, at a cafe in Collingwood called South of Johnston. As we were talking, the lunch rush came in so there is a bit of background ambience, for the first half of the episode. When it got too noisy, we moved from the cafe to Nigel's car to finish the conversation. (The glamour of podcasts!) So I do apologise for the background noise for some of it, but hope you don't mind - just lean in and imagine you're sat at the the table with us, enjoying the conversation over coffee and maybe a little sweet treat. Enjoy. What is Beauty Island? Each episode, beauty journalist Brittany Stewart sits down with a guest to find out about their life, career and the 8 desert island beauty products that have a special memory or meaning for them.  Stephanie Darling - Beauty Director and Author, Secrets of A Beauty Queen | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:54:18

Exciting news! Beauty Island has been dubbed a 'new and noteworthy' podcast by Apple! I'm your host Brittany Stewart, and each episode I sit down with a guest to find out about their life, career and the 8 desert island beauty products that have a special memory or meaning for them. This week, my guest is Stephanie Darling. Stephanie is the beauty queen, according to her brilliant book Secrets of A Beauty Queen released last year. It's half memoir and half beauty tips, tricks and recommendations. She's the Beauty Director at Fairfax with a weekly column in Sunday Life, and was the Beauty Director at Vogue Australia for over a decade. She's also worked at Harper's Bazaar, Mode, Cleo and was on the launch team at Madison. She invited me into her beautiful Sydney home where we talked about the highlights of the over 260 treatments she's trialled including Equine therapy, her decision to get a nose job, thoughts on botox, interviewing Jane Fonda, the, erm, interesting haircuts she's had over the years including a khaki fringe, extravagant beauty press trips, her perfume-smelling skills and a whole lot more. I hope you enjoy.
