Beauty Island show

Beauty Island

Summary: Beauty Island tells stories of memories sparked by beauty products. Host Brittany Stewart gets inside the minds (and beauty cabinets) of well-known figures inside and outside the beauty industry. Each episode, guests will be asked to share the eight beauty products that have a special meaning to them. Maybe it's the lipstick their mum used to apply on a night out, the first beauty product they ever bought themselves, or the perfume that instantly brings back memories of a special occasion. We'll discover more about their career, relationships, family, challenges and everything in between, bookmarked by the beauty products that have helped shape their lives. It's a celebration of life - and lipstick.

Your hair needs this best-smelling dry shampoo... Hello and welcome to Beauty Island, the award-nominated beauty podcast that celebrates life and lipstick. I'm your host, beauty journalist, Brittany Stewart and this is another episode of Beauty Isolation, a special mini series of Beauty Island. Normally, I ask my guests about the 8 beauty products that have a special memory or meaning for them. The ones they'd take to a desert island, or Beauty Island, that I am sending them off to. In Beauty Isolation, instead they pick the 8 products that have played a significant role in quarantine. The ones they're using, ditching or rediscovering in isolation. Twice a week, we'll explore how their relationship to beauty has changed during this time, as well as conversations around self-care, how they're going, and what they're most looking forward to. Today my guest is Kate Lancaster, Beauty Writer at ELLE + Harper's BAZAAR Australia. She's also the creator of the Self-Care Section, an Instagram account highlighting and celebrating Australian beauty businesses. We debated daytime vs nightime showers, talked about the best smelling dry shampoo, and why we need to make the language we use to talk about our skin more positive. Kate was so eloquent talking about skin positivity and neutrality, with a reminder I think we could all do with hearing. Now, over to Kate. Enjoy. What's the difference between cologne, eau de toilette and eau de parfum? Hello and welcome to Beauty Island. The special mini series of Beauty Isolation will be dropping from next week, where I talk to beauty friends new and old about their beauty routines in quarantine. Today I'm excited to share a little bonus episode with you all about fragrance and gifting fragrance. I got on the phone with expert Ruth Stonier, National Training Manager at Clarins Fragrance & Beauty, who's job it is to discover, train, educate and recommend the best fit fragrances. It applies to finding one for yourself, and for a gift, but of course may be particularly helpful with Mother's Day coming up. We talked about why perfume is so strongly linked to memories, the difference between cologne and eau de toilette and eau de parfum, and where do you start when it comes to working out the right perfume to gift? *WIN* - I also have a perfume prize pack to give away for you or for you mum. Win yourself a The Blow voucher.... It's the season four FINALE! Hello and welcome to Beauty Island, the award-nominated beauty podcast that celebrates life and lipstick. I'm your host, beauty journalist, Brittany Stewart. Each episode, I sit down with a guest and ask them about the 8 beauty products that have a special memory or meaning for them. The ones they'd take to a desert island, or Beauty Island, that I am sending them off to. Maybe it's the first beauty product they ever bought, the one that gives them their signature look, or the perfume that instantly sparks a memory of a special place or person. Along the way we find out more about their life, career and the people and events that have shaped them into who they are today. This is the final episode of season four, and I couldn't think of anyone much more fitting to conclude what has been another incredible and inspiring season. The good news is that I'll be back very soon with a special series; a little tweak to the usual format I'm calling Beauty Isolation. Guests will still be talking through 8 products, but the ones they're using, ditching or rediscovering during quarantine. We'll explore how their relationship to beauty has changed during this time, as well as a host of related topics. I've hit up some old and new beauty friends for a brilliant line up and I can't wait to share it with you. Today, my guest is founder of The Blow and From The Memo, Phoebe Simmonds. She's sharp, intelligent, resilient and sitting down with her, it's quickly apparent why she is so highly regarded and liked in the beauty industry. Our chat was just a few days before COVID-19 took over the world. We talked about what she learned working in beauty and marketing all over the world for top brands including LMVH, Benefit (and even a Bono-affiliated beauty brand), the reality of burnout when you're building a business, having Julia Gillard in for a blowdry, and the sunscreen that got her on the SPF train. At the end of the episode, we talk about ways you can support businesses like The Blow during these times through gift vouchers. I know that one of the first things I'll be treating myself to is a pampering blowdry from The Blow and I would love to pass that forward to. So I have purchased a voucher that you can spend on a blowdry, dry-style or treatment once they have re-opened that I would love to give away! TO WIN: All you have to do is share a screenshot of this episode on your Instagram story or as a feed post and ensure you tag @beautyislandpodcast and @theblowaustralia to go in the running to win. If you're a fan of the show, you'll definitely remember her from the 2015 season where she ended up coming 5th - young, driven, talented, determined and with brilliant curly hair. Obviously Beauty Island is a beauty-focussed podcast and I've had many beauty centred guests on the show, but I love how it can be a starting point for wider conversation, as well as an interest that is obviously not limited to people who actually work in beauty. Sara talks about the career rut that led her to Masterchef, how her love of travel has shaped and changed her food preferences, and the un-smudgeable lipstick that will withstand eating, talking and multiple coffees that she wishes she knew about during filming. One real standout from our conversation which Sara was so open about was the answer to 'what happens next'. For all the incredible opportunities and experiences that eventually came her way, she says the year immediately after Masterchef was one of the hardest of her life. It's, for want of a better phrase, an important reality check that I certainly identified with. I also have to acknowledge the completely incidental but perfect timing; the latest season of the show started this week! If it's a favourite, I hope you'll enjoy hearing about Sara's story even more.  Sarah Davidson - Creator, Seize The Yay and Co-Founder, Matcha Maiden | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:11:34

From high-flying lawyer to (equally) high-flying 'funtrepreneur'... The ones they'd take to a desert island, or Beauty Island, that I am sending them off too. Maybe it's the first beauty product they ever bought, the one that gives them their signature look, or the perfume that instantly sparks a memory of a special place or person. Along the way we find out more about their life, career and the people and events that have shaped them into who they are today. My usual disclaimer in these strange and unprecedented times; this interview was recorded well before Corona became a common word in our vernacular, so I hope you a) are doing ok and b) enjoy it as a virus respite. Today, my guest is Sarah Davidson, co-founder of Matcha Maiden and creator of Seize the Yay. Incredibly driven and articulate, Sarah has already had a number of careers. She doesn't do things by halves - and the results speak for themselves. Sarah shared her journey from ballerina to lawyer to entrepreneur to so-called 'funtrepreneur' and the products that have marked her beauty journey along the way. We talked about being adopted and how that's helped shape her identity, how illness led to the discovery and foundation of mega successful Matcha Maiden, her sensible and reassuring advice about taking the leap into the unknown, and the best foundation for acne-prone skin she's been wearing for 15 years. She's interviewed some incredibly successful and inspiring people on her brilliant podcast Seize The Yay, but I hope you'll find, like me, Sarah herself is equally as inspiring as as any of them. As we're forced to stay home and maybe reflect on our lives and career, I hope you'll find comfort or a spark in her story. My usual disclaimer in these strange and unprecedented times - this interview was recorded before Corona hit, so I hope you can enjoy it as an escape and adventure into something a little lighter. Today, my guest is Paula Joye, journalist, content creator and founder of The Joye.com, and former editor of some of Australia's top magazines, working across Cleo, Madison, Mode and Shop Til You Drop. She is brilliant, driven, and in a true reflection of her name, utterly joyful. I caught up with Paula in Sydney to talk about working in the halcyon years of magazines after getting her start at Vogue, the musical champions that mark the chapters of her life, the shift of power from magazines to social media and the implications of that, particularly bringing up teenage daughters, and among other great recommendations, her go-to face potion for glowing skin and the best mascara for short lashes. It will also challenge you to look at bumper stickers in a completely new way - you'll have to listen to the end to make full sense of that!
