Beauty Island show

Beauty Island

Summary: Beauty Island tells stories of memories sparked by beauty products. Host Brittany Stewart gets inside the minds (and beauty cabinets) of well-known figures inside and outside the beauty industry. Each episode, guests will be asked to share the eight beauty products that have a special meaning to them. Maybe it's the lipstick their mum used to apply on a night out, the first beauty product they ever bought themselves, or the perfume that instantly brings back memories of a special occasion. We'll discover more about their career, relationships, family, challenges and everything in between, bookmarked by the beauty products that have helped shape their lives. It's a celebration of life - and lipstick.

Do you really need sheet masks for your bum? And what's the reality of being a beauty expert over 50 on Instagram? Hello and welcome back to Beauty Island, the beauty podcast that celebrates life and lipstick. I'm your host, beauty journalist, Brittany Stewart. Each episode, I sit down with a guest and ask them about the 8 beauty products that have a special memory or meaning for them. The ones they'd take to a desert island, or Beauty Island, that I am sending them off too. Maybe it's the product that reminds them of their mum, the beauty product that defined their teens or the perfume that instantly sparks a memory of a special place or person. Along the way we find out more about their life, career and the people and events that have shaped them into who they are today. Today's episode is the last of my london series that I recorded when i was in the UK the other month. My guest is Jane Cunningham, who you might know as a british beauty blogger. Or rather The British Beauty Blogger. She has almost 40,000 Instagram followers, with hundreds of thousands of views on the blog she started over a decade ago. She's written for The Guardian, The Financial Times, Metro, The Express and many more. She very kindly offered to come to me in London when I was staying with my cousins - shoutout to Andy and Miki for letting me turn their living room into a pop up podcast studio!. The sun was shining on an August weekday when we spent an hour on the sofa chatting all things beauty. We talked how influencer and makeup brand collaborations really work, why red lipstick isn't for her, the ridiculousness of face masks for your bum, and had one of the most interesting discussions I've ever had on the attitude the beauty industry has towards older women and whether it's changing. Plus, she shares her 8 chosen products including the extortionately expensive lip balm that she just can't stop buying.  Nadine Baggott - YouTuber and Celebrity Beauty Editor (UK) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:14:54

Is neck cream a complete waste of money? Is the science or the marketing of a beauty product more important? And what's the foolproof eyeliner Nadine's been using for years? Listen to find out... I'm very excited to share today's episode with celebrity beauty editor, TV presenter, YouTuber, and one of my favourite beauty content creators, Nadine Baggott . As I mentioned last week, it's one I did when I was in London. I slid into Nadine's DMs, not expecting to hear back, and within a few hours we'd set a date to meet up at her agent's office to chat. In a world of 20-something beauty youtubers, Nadine, in her mid 50s, does beauty for grown ups, as she calls it. After 18 years as a celebrity beauty editor at Hello Magazine - and does she have some stories including being told to fuck off by Kate Moss and sued by Naomi Campbell - frustrated by the slow uptake of print media to the digital space, she started a youtube channel. She now has over 100,000 YouTube subscribers and is represented by Gleam Futures, the same talent management as Zoella, Pixiwoo, Louise Pentland, and many more. It was in their office we met, a bustling place near Tottenham Court Road. Nadine is tall, confident, cool and utterly charming. You can see why she's such a brilliant journalist - warm, open, funny and able to instantly put you at ease. This is a slightly longer episode than normal but for good reason. We covered so many topics in the beauty industry, with Nadine offering a no BS, upfront take on it all from why she hates the term 'clean' beauty and the battle between science and marketing in the beauty industry to whether expensive and cheap makeup is all coming from the same factory. Bet your ears pricked up at that! She shares the 8 (plus a few more!) beauty products that have a special memory for her, why neck creams are a complete waste of money and the face product that's confidence in a tube. As always, If you enjoy this episode, please subscribe to the podcast, rate five stars and write a review on Apple Podcasts. It really helps other people find the podcast. And share and tag me on your Instagram stories too - I love reposting and seeing where you're listening. Thank you for the lovely welcome back and comments following the launch of season three last week - I hope you enjoy this episode too. Now, over to Nadine. Enjoy.  Ava Matthews - Co-founder of Ultra Violette | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:55:44

Hello and welcome back to Beauty Island, the beauty podcast that celebrates life and lipstick. I'm your host, beauty journalist, Brittany Stewart. It's been a while. A few months to be exact. As I alluded to in the last episode of season two, I was taking a little break. In fact, i quit my job, packed my bags and went travelling for three and a half months around Europe. To be cliched, it was one of those trips of a lifetime. Spent in the company of old friends, new friends, family but largely myself. I ate and drank my way through France, Italy and Spain. I wandered for days around the galleries of Vienna, Amsterdam, Paris and London, soaking up art, fashion and beauty history from Mary Quant, Yves Saint Laurent, Helena Rubenstein, Gustav Klimt, Rodin and Van Gogh. I even may have done a few Beauty Island interviews along the way. But after a summer of self-indulgence, self-discovery and cultural exploration, on the one year anniversary of launch this passion project podcast, I am back and so excited to kick off season three. A reminder of exactly what we do here. Today my guest is Ava Matthews. Now, this is an interview I did before I left. But as we firmly leap into Spring with Summer more than a glimmer of warm hope in the distance, in Australia at least, it's the perfect time to releawse it. Where to begin with Ava? She's had such an interesting career - from working in beauty PR to developing product at Mecca Cosmetica to co-founding skinscreen (that's sunscreen and skincare FYI) brand Ultra Violette. If you follow any Aussie beauty bloggers on Instagram, you'll probably have seen it on your feed as everyone is raving about this sunscreen disrupter. I actually used their Supreme Screen sunscreen every day while I was in Europe, and can say hand on heart its one of the best facial sunscreens I've ever tried. It also works brilliantly as a primer under makeup too. Anyway, enough about me. In this episode, Ava talks about her slightly different childhood growing up with a beauty editor mum and fashion photographer dad - after all it's not everyone who wakes up to see Naomi Campbell in their garden! - working in PR in New York and finding out it's nothing likes Samantha Jones made it out to be, why buying perfume on holiday is always a good idea and the story behind co-founding latest venture, Ultra Violette. Plus, much more. If you enjoy this episode, please subscribe to the podcast if you're not already, rate five stars and write a review on Apple Podcasts. It helps other people find us and means I can keep on creating Beauty Island for you! Now, over to Ava. Enjoy.  A little note from me. | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:04:06

Yes, that's it for Season 2 of Beauty Island! We're taking a little (ok, well a little bit more than a little) break until August as I do the classic mid-twenties thing and go travelling for a few months around Europe to 'find myself'. (Just kidding. Kinda.) I appreciate it's quite a while to go without a podcast but rest assured when Beauty Island returns it will be for another big season of incredible local and international guests. (And in fact, if there's someone you'd love to hear on the podcast now is the time to tell me! Email me beautyislandpodcast@gmail.com or send me a message on Instagram @beautyislandpodcast.) Thank you so much for your support of the podcast so far. We've hit the charts, been featured by Apple and nominated for an Australian Podcast Award. But the biggest achievement for me is knowing that you enjoy what I'm creating and your messages and reviews make me grin like an idiot. So thank YOU! Until we return, why not scroll through the feed and listen (or re-listen!) to episodes from the last two seasons? Whether you want career advice from the women who've built big beauty brands, want to know what it's really like to be a top Beauty or Fashion Editor, are after the goss about influencers and beauty bloggers, or fancy taking a peek into the makeup kits of professional makeup artists, there are so many great guests to choose from. In the meantime, you can also follow Beauty Island on Instagram @beautyislandpodcast. And if you're interested in the beauty side of my travels (the products I'm using etc and maybe a cheeky scenery shot) you can follow me on my personal beauty Instagram account @brittanybeautybts. Thank you and until next time... bye bye!

After a successful career in PR, Genevieve was just 24 when she spotted a gap in the market and went out on her own to launch her own business. Now, Day Management reps some of Australia's top influencer talent, and is the first in Australia to launch a podcast arm. Genevieve is one of the most go-getting and driven people I've ever met. And if you're interested or curious about influencer culture, she is upfront and honest in her answers to all the questions you've secretly wondered but haven't wanted to ask. I went to Day Management's offices in Melbourne to chat to Gen about how much influencers can really earn, how the landscape has changed since she launched Day Management and what the future may look like, and the $19 black eyeliner that will give you flawless wings. Now if you're in Victoria, you may recognise her from the Nine Local News bulletins at 6pm each weeknight. And she's been a familiar fixture in Australia's living rooms at Nine for four decades this year, since starting as a cadet with the network in 1979. It's been - and continues to be - an incredible and enduring career, and Hall was actually also the first woman to win the prestigious Thorn Award, a national award for journalism in 1990 for her report on the siege at Hawthorn Kindergarten. I went into the Nine studios (which is exciting, even for a working journo!) to chat to Jo about her 40 years of journalism and how the attitude towards women on TV has changed, why her hairstyle is part of her contract, raising her four children as a single mum, and the surprising drugstore dupe she's found to replace her signature designer perfume after it was discontinued, plus so much more.  Kirstie Clements - Author and Former Editor of Vogue Australia | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:01:56

Imagine meeting your husband in a glamorous, smokey Parisian nightclub... Hello and welcome to Beauty Island, the beauty podcast that celebrates life and lipstick. I'm your host, beauty journalist, Brittany Stewart, and each episode I sit down with a guest to ask them about the 8 beauty products that have a special memory or meaning for them, that they'd take to a desert island, or Beauty Island, that I am sending them off too. Maybe it's the product that reminds them of their mum, the beauty product that defined their teens or the perfume that instantly sparks a memory of a special place or person. Along the way we find out more about their life, career and the people and events that have shaped them into who they are today. Today my guest is Author and Former Editor of Vogue Australia, Kirstie Clements. Working her way from the front desk to the top job, Kirstie spent 13 years as the editor of Australia's premiere high fashion magazine. Then one day, out of the blue, she was fired. Her book The Vogue Factor, which she was approached to write the very next day, tells of her incredible story from rebel in The Shire to Beauty Editor in Paris to one of Sydney's most influential magazine editors... And what happened after that. Like anyone who was once a budding fashion journalist, I have long admired Kirstie and thumbed The Vogue Factor, the first of five books she has written, countless times. So it was truly an honour to have the chance to chat with her about discovering the Sydney punk scene at 16, how beauty can be warpaint, community building and even meditive in life's chaotic moments, her blurred cameo in Zoolander and how she's feeling about returning to magazines full-time six years after leaving Vogue, this time as Features Director at Harper's Bazaar, another former home for her. One note - this interview was conducted over the phone so the quality of the audio is not as good as when we're both in the same room. That is always my aim in arranging interviews, but given I'm in Melbourne, work full-time in a job unrelated to this podcast and many of my guests are a) in Sydney and b) very busy people who are very kind to give up their time to do this podcast is sometimes a little difficult. I do use my leave to go up to Sydney every few months to do these interviews but I recently had someone a leave a review commenting on the audio of these over the phone episodes so just wanted to acknowledge that and explain a little bit about why that sometimes happens. But as always I appreciate that feedback, and will definitely be ensuring more, and hopefully soon, all episodes are done in person. Speaking of reviews, If you do enjoy this episode, please subscribe, rate and write a review. But enough of me, over to my chat with the fabulous Kirstie Clements. Enjoy.  BONUS: Five Favs - Amy Starr | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:12:51

Hello and welcome to Beauty Island! As I mentioned in Tuesday's episode, to mark the halfway point of season two, instead of a normal beauty island episode, this week we have two bonus Five Favs from two of my guests so far. Jules Sebastian was earlier this week and today, is former ELLE Beauty Director Amy Starr. As you might know by now - or maybe you don't! - my name is Brittany Stewart and I'm the voice inside your ears aka the host of Beauty Island. In each main episode, I ask a special guest about the eight beauty products that have a special memory or meaning for them. But, in Five Favs, the focus is on the beauty products in their makeup bags they're loving right now. Amy Starr is the former Beauty and Lifestyle Director of ELLE Australia. Her main episode dropped a few weeks ago, so just scroll down a little on your feed if you haven't listened to that already. In Five Faves, she talks about nearly-always-sold-out foundation alternative she loves, and why you should never apply a serum to a dry face. This was one piece of beauty advice that blew my mind. As someone with over a decade of experience at Australia's top magazines, I couldn't not ask about where she thinks there's still a future for print magazines.  BONUS: Five Favs - Jules Sebastian | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:12:42

We're mixing things up a little this week to mark the official halfway mark of Beauty Island Season Two. This week I'll be dropping two Five Favs bonus episodes with two of the most popular guests from this season so far. First up? Jules Sebastian - stylist and TV presenter. If you haven't listened to her full episode from last week, I highly recommend it! In that, she shared the eight beauty products that have a special memory or meaning for her. In Five Favs, we take a closer look at some of the products she loves for everyday - and it's a lot more low maintenance than you might expect! She also shares her piece of wisdom - the reality of fitting exercise into your busy lifestyle (no - she doesn't jump out of bed eager to go the gym every morning!)  Jules Sebastian - Stylist, TV Presenter, Philanthropist | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:00:28

What's it like to meet your soulmate at 14 years old? Jules Sebastian shares... Today my guest is stylist and TV presenter, Jules Sebastian. If the name sounds familiar, yes, she is wife of that well known Aussie singer Guy Sebastian, but if that's all you know about her then you are in for a real treat with this episode. Jules is a TV presenter, stylist, has combined the two with two makeover shows MTV's Style Me and Channel 7's Bringing Sexy Back, host of her own fantastic YouTube interview series Tea With Jules and is also a philanthropist with The Sebastian Foundation which she set up with her husband. She shares some of the incredible work they're doing for families, and particularly victims of domestic violence (*content warning*). We talk about the moment she discovered that doing all the creative things she loved could be her career and working incredibly hard to make it happen, the imposter syndrome she still feels to this day, the perfume that always gets her compliments from strangers and what it's like meeting your soulmate at 14 years old. How she talks about her relationship with Guy, well, I think we both got a bit teary! She's also so genuine, kind and downright lovely. Enjoy. Love Beauty Island? Please subscribe, rate and review!
