 Re-Learning Stuff (1/4) | 126 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:29:20

We're starting a new series! In this one, Erin and I talk about re-learning things as an adult. We all learn things growing up, many of them subconsciously. And then we often deconstruct, then re-learn new ideas, truths, and nuances about life as we get older. It's a decent way to gain some wisdom. In part one, we're talking about relationships. What are the ingredients for good, healthy ones? How do we set healthy boundaries? What does it mean to be yourself? It's a good one!  Women's Work: A Landscape Architect | 125 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:45:11

We’ve got for you a Very Special Episode of Simple Show for you here... a recent episode of Women’s Work, my other new podcast that celebrates creative women who do interesting work! From artists and entrepreneurs, to scientists, journalists, engineers, coders, and beyond… it’s your chance to hear the stories of all sorts of women who make our world a better place. If you like The Simple Show, I think you’ll love Women's Work. In this one I’m talking to Bethany Rydmark, an eighth-generation Oregonian currently based in Portland, and a landscape architect, juggling her work while raising her young kids with her husband Ted. She loves helping shape the places people live with their families, and you can hear the passion for her work in her voice. She’s also the founder of something called the PDX Food Swap, which is a fantastic idea!  Social Self-Care (4/4) | 124 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:41:57

We're wrapping up our series on social self-care with the idea of legacy — but not in a writing-your-will, do-something-amazing way. Haley and I are talking about having a view on life that’s beyond your own short time on earth. This is about leaving things for the next generation, whether or not you're parents. And this is good to think about whether you've got babies at home, are empty nesters, or somewhere in between. There's so many small, daily things we can do to leave a legacy!  Social Self-Care (3/4) | 123 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:41:07

Yeah, it seems weird to say storytelling is part of self-care, much less social self-care — but hear us out. Haley and I talk about why infusing our lives with good stories makes us better people, and therefore, better members of society. Stories inform our moral imagination, a place to hang wisdom and complicated ideas, and teach us what collectively matters to us: we’re designed to learn, love, and carry stories with us.  Social Self-Care (2/4) | 122 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:35:09

Continuing our series on social self-care, this time Haley and I talk about stewardship: caring for the things we've been given. What does that look like in real life? It was commonplace for our grandparents' generation to 'use it up, wear it out, make do, or do without,' as the war slogan reminded them—it was just part of life. But we live in a throwaway culture now. “Reusing something instead of immediately discarding it, when done for the right reasons, can be an act of love which expresses our own dignity.” - Pope Francis Haley and I talk about the practicals here, but also why we consider this self-care, and not just good practice for the earth. Basically, we think this is taking care of ourselves, too.  Social Self-Care (1/4) | 121 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:34:14

In this new series, co-host Haley Stewart and I deep-dive about self-care—but not just self-care. We're talking self-care for the greater good; the simple-but-profound idea that when we take care of ourselves, we're better members of society. We're better neighbors, friends, parents, spouses... we're just better people for the world around us. It's more than just monthly manicures: it's about being the healthiest version of ourselves. Here in Part 1, we're unpacking friendships, and what it means to take care of ourselves in order to be a good friend. I loved this chat.  Making the Most of 2 Weeks Off (4/4) | 120 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:38:20

We're wrapping up this deep-dive on travel with Part 4: making it meaningful, both while you're on the road and when you return. Because it's all well and good to plan adventures and get excited, but what about bonding? Loving the experience? Making memories? And coming home well? Steph and I talk debriefing—landing the plane relationally and emotionally—as well as soaking in the moment while you're there. When you embrace not being able to do everything, it's easier to be fully in the moment. And this, after all, is what makes travel worth it.  Making the Most of 2 Weeks Off (3/4) | 119 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:43:43

Let’s keep talking about travel! In this part of our deep-dive, Stephanie and I get into the stuff you need to know about traveling internationally. Because even if it doesn’t feel like it, you can do this with your kiddos, even with just a few weeks' vacation time — it just takes planning and an open mind. Passports, visas, language barriers, jet lag, currency, public transportation, and more… We’ve got you covered.  Making the Most of 2 Weeks Off (2/4) | 118 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:33:29

Continuing our series on travel, in this episode (and in the one after), Stephanie and I break down the prepping that has to happen in order to make a trip happen. This is the part that keeps many people from doing more than a weekend away at the in-laws, but it doesn't have to be overwhelming. We talk about saving money beforehand, scoring the best flights, cutting costs out on the road (it all has to do with when and where), finding the best-for-you housing, and of course, packing light. We also break down 3 potential options for you to consider, from closest-and-minimal-commitment to dare-to-dream-big.  Bonus: The Bible Binge! | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:17:27

Imagine if your Bible 101 class was taught by Us Weekly. I know, it sounds bizarre. That’s the newest project from my friends Knox and Jamie from The Popcast, so it kinda makes sense now, right? Each episode of The Bible Binge involves Knox and Jamie taking both the familiar and obscure stories found in scripture, and with equal parts humor and insight, they walk us through the odd circumstances in which these ancient figures find themselves. Whether these are the stories you learned at VBS or it’s the first you’ve heard of some of these people, The Bible Binge has something for everyone. It's neither evangelical nor anti-Christian; it’s just a recap of an ancient story as if it was an episode of The Bachelor. If you’re saying, “This is the thing that’s been missing in my life and I didn’t even know it,” Knox & Jamie has you covered.  What you've got here is an excerpt of the episode where they recap the story of Adam and Eve. Subscribe to The Bible Binge wherever you listen to podcasts, and follow the show on Twitter, Instagram or Facebook at @TheBibleBinge.

 Making the Most of 2 Weeks Off (1/4) | Ep. 117 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:36:58

I love to travel, and my co-host Stephanie loves to travel. But we get that not everybody works for themselves or has the flexibility to travel long lengths of time. So? For the next month, we're gonna share what we know about extended travel from our family's experiences, and help you make them work for a typical two-week time off work. Will we challenge you to think outside the box? Sure. Will we guilt you into feeling like you should be someone you're not? No way. In this first episode of our four-part series, Steph and I want to inspire you with what's possible. National parks, book pilgrimages, or a nearby country, oh my! We're wrapping up our series on podcasts and playlists with this final episode... In this one, Kendra and I pull back the curtain to explain more of the art and science behind our strategy on creating playlists. How do we pick who to play when? What mood do we want to strike for which playlist? And then finally: who are some of our favorite artists, albums, and playlists? (Get ready for the epic-est of show notes!)  Use Your Earbuds (3/4) | 115 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:35:18

Continuing our deep-dive on earbuds, Kendra and I shift into music with this episode. Both of us get one of the kindest, most surprising comments about what we put out in the world: “I love your Spotify playlists!” We’re totally floored by this, because we honestly just love making playlists and are happy to share them. And hey, we love that you love them—and to us, this means we must have a thing for music. So in this episode, we start off with our backgrounds: How did both of us come to love music so much? And then, we get into why we still play music all the time, how we do it affordably, and when we play what. In the final episode, we’ll share specific artists, as well as the art and science behind how we create the playlists we love. If you can’t tell, we adore this topic!  Use Your Earbuds (2/4) | 114 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:41:51

Continuing on with our deep-dive on podcasts and playlists, Kendra and I give the run-down on our favorite podcasts! It's SO hard to narrow down the list, but here's where we dive first. Start with Part 1, if you haven't yet, then move on here. The next two episodes after this will be on playlists: how we enjoy music in our lives, and what's on our short list.  Use Your Earbuds (1/4) | 113 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:34:28

In our new deep-dive series, Kendra and are talking about how to use your earbuds—and no, we don’t mean how to coil them up so they don’t end up a chaotic tangle in your bag (we still don’t know how to do that). ...This series is all about podcasts and playlists. We’re both big fans of listening to both, but we also only have 24 hours a day. This means we can’t listen to everything we’d like, but we do manage to sneak in a good amount of both good music and fantastic podcasts. In Part 1, we go in to the how of podcasts. I mean, yeah, we’re only talking podcasts, not curing cancer, but it’s still a good idea to go in with a game plan, lest you waste all kinds of time. Because if you haven’t noticed, there are tons of podcasts out there, with new ones launching daily.
