Fortuitously, I found your podcast via Stitcher/Gun Rights Radio Network on your 3rd episode.  I love the content and the relaxed banter-style atmosphere.  It makes me feel as though I am visiting with friends and gleaming knowledge from their experience. In the DIY sense of things, I would love to make our ARs uniquely us.  My wife is still deciding how she would like her build.  I too am deciding many factors.  This brings me to my question for your podcast.  While black is tacti-cool for an EBR, I am interested in custom finishes.  I really like the nickel boron finish offered by the Mega Billet NiB Combo.  With its high cost and extreme unavailability (due to current issues), we bought standard black complete lowers from SOG Armory in Houston, TX.  Your podcast, however, has inspired me and I wish to refinish my lower and future build in my choice of colors.  As a Texas Aggie I would love to finish my AR in a nice two-tone color combo using an anodized Aggie Maroon color for the lower/upper and possibly the handguard/rail and buttstock.  I gather that the current finish on my SOG-15 lower needs to be stripped before I can apply a custom finish. I am hoping you guys can inform me as to: 1) How to strip the current finish and any gotchas to watch out for 2) Choices in refinishing such as cerakote, anodizing, etc. 3) Considerations in altering the mil-spec dimensions via the refinishing process 4) Performance characteristics of various finishes, specifically how would a refinished anodized lower/upper compare to the Nickel Boron or Teflon finishes on the market --- will I create serious problems by choosing a purely anodized finish over those \'performance\' finishes Aaron:  First off thanks a lot for the shows that you put on I learn a great deal from them. I was wondering if there was anything wrong with keeping a PMag fully loaded for a long period of time. I have one fully loaded in my home defense rifle and was wondering if I needed to switch mags to make sure I don't damage the integrity of the spring. Any insight you have would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again for your show and keep up the good work! Derrick:  Hey guys, love the podcast!

I have a Bushmaster flat top carbine (came with a quad rail and no front sight post) that I bought new in 2004 and I\'m looking to upgrade the upper to something with a gas piston. I was wondering what y\'all thought of the Ruger short stroke gas piston uppers. Would that be a good option or should I just upgrade my Bushmaster with an Adams Arms ssgp conversion kit and get a new, longer quad rail (I like the look of a long rail)? Thanks for all the work you guys put into the podcasts. Mike: My friends and I were comparing ARs recently and we noticed a spring on the shoulder of the firing pin on my Armalite Ar-10.  None of us knew why it was there until your latest AR-15 podcast. It became apparent during your discussion of using forward assist to quietly close the bolt on an un-fired round, eliminating both noise and the \"little dimple\" on the primer, that Armalite added the spring as a safety measure to keep the pin from sliding forward and striking the primer of an un-fired round in the chamber when the bolt slams home. You guys have solved another mystery! Keep up the great work! Manny:  First I wanted to that you guys for your awesome AR-15 podcast..Love the format, I have 2 Stripped Lowers on order (w/JD Machine), and look forward to future podcasts to guide me through my journey of building my very First AR :) A question for you guys: One of the lowers will probably end up as a 9mm carbine. Do you have any opinions or insights you can share regarding blow-back uppers? I recently came across some info. regarding DI-9mm ARs, and wondered if this should be my direction... http://www.lonewolfdist.com/Detail.aspx?PROD=285845&CAT=288 http://www.lonewolfdist.com/Detail.aspx?PROD=187826&CAT=2895 John:  Hey guys love the show so much! Jake you\'re jokes and sense of humor remind me of my good buddy Dan. Its kind of like hanging with my buds listening to your show. I love Ar\'s and my dad and I bought 4 in a span of 3 months. Were addicts and may need a \"psychological evaluation\" because we like hanging out shooting all types of guns. Ha ha. It would mean a lot two me if u would watch a 30 second video or two of me getting down and dirty in ohio with my two favorite black rifles! Thanks! Keep it up guys. Oh and...leave the light on for me! Brett:  A buddy turned me onto your podcast. Love it. keep up the good work! However: I usually listen to all my podcasts like, Armed American Radio, Gun for Hire, and the survival podcast on my Ipod or Iphone in the garage or up at my ranch.  How can I get your podcasts onto my devices? Andrew:  First of all I love your show and recently downloaded it to give me something to listen to on my flight. After a little bit of looking around at belt fed conversions From what I saw they were expensive. Are they worth it?

I'm not sure if Reed said he'd ever built an AR from an 80% lower or not. Does anyone really think that building an 'unregistered' AR would make a difference IF a ban made it through Congress? http://monderno.com/monderno/legally-build-an-unregistered-ar-15/ also Gun APP http://noble-empire.com/apps.php?app=gun They don't have an AR-15, but they do have an M16-A1.  I had to pay to get it (.99 for one firearm, I think I did $2.97 for 5 (AK-47, M1 Garand, Remington 870, Mauser 98).  One of the things I like about the app is that you can label the parts. :) Jeff Hinkle - Hey guys,  Love the show.  I just finished listening to episode #2.  In the episode you briefly discussed the 300 AAC Blackout.  After reading an article in Recoil Magazine I decided in July to build a 300 BLK upper for my AR.  The only difference between a standard 223 AR and the 300 BLK is the barrel.  The mags, bolt carrier, gas tube, gas block, handgaurds, and upper receiver are exactly the same as your standard 223 AR.  The only issue I really had was tuning a reload that would cycle 220 grain subsonic loads.  I realize no one can be an expert in all facets of AR’s so I thought I would pass on a little of my experience and knowledge.  Keep up the great podcasts. You mentioned that you will be giving away your AR builds. Is that through the GGR email subscription I could not find one on the AR podcast. Robert ( last name Zack can't pronounce) in Memphis Hey Jake, Great show on AR uppers and lowers only problem is now I can't find ammo to practice with oh well I can just run around the back yard and dry fire and yell bang bang. Seriously no 9mm either so I went another way and bought a 1911, so far plenty of 45 available. It's my first one. Myles:  I just wanted to comment about the use of forward assists on AR-15s, I have never and will never use a forward assist for it's intended purpose. Forcing a round into a fouled chamber seems like an incredibly bad idea. However I do use the forward assist for 2 purposes, one, it allows you to silently chamber a round as opposed to simply dropping the bolt which makes a lot of noise.  The other purpose? The next time you are out shooting an AR-15 drop your bolt on a full magazine, then extract that chambered round. You will likely notice a tiny dimple on the primer, that is the result of the firing pin bouncing off the primer. This is a slight safety hazard, but I am told that repeatedly removing and rechambering a single 556 caliber round will result in that round becoming unreliable. I have discovered that by easing the round into a clean chamber with a forward assist will not cause this dimple to form.   iTunes Review:   Outro:feedback@ar15podcast.com Find us on iTunes http://www.ar15builder.com/ Brownells White Oak Armament Geissele.com

Forgings: Almost all major manufacturers use aluminum forgings for their lowers.  Due to the high cost of the machinery, only 5/6 foundries fabricate the forgings for all the AR's made in America.  A piece of red hot aluminum is put in between two dies and is smashed into shape by a very large (100 ton) hydraulic hammer.  These raw forgings are then sent to a machine shop for further machining and processing.  The forging process aligns the molecules in the aluminum grain structure to make a very strong finished product.  (Note: All aircraft landing gears and highly stressed wing parts are manufactured this same way because of their strength.) Billet:  Billet is nothing more than flat plate or bar stock that is machined to finished configuration, cutting through all the molecular grain structure, thereby weakening it.  There are only a couple of manufacturers, like Sun Devil, making billet lowers.  Their benefit is that they can change configurations or modify tolerances with a few keystrokes on the computer.  The material used is usually 6061 -T6, rather than the stronger 7075-T6 used in forgings. Castings:  This is what was given as being a forging (ie pouring aluminum into a mold, usually made from sand or ceramic media) in podcast #3.  Castings got off to a bad start as being weak in the early years of aftermarket lowers, due to a very granular, easy to fracture molecular structure.  Castings are generally used because they are cheap to produce and minimize additional machining required.    Ruger now uses this method exclusively for their firearm actions, including the SR 556.  They seem to have gotten it right, but most builders will still shy away from any cast uppers or lowers for strength reasons. 95% of production lowers are strong forgings produced by 5 or 6 foundries in America and are sold to only 11-18 machine shops.  They are then sold to the actual AR manufactures with the manufacturer's name imprinted on the lower. You have a great podcast and forum with a lot of listeners.  I'm sure you would like the correct info out there.  Just thought I'd bring this to your attention, but know you will probably want to follow up with research of your own.  You will probably want to fact check on future podcasts, because many of your listeners are taking what you are saying as accurate fact. Looking forward to more good stuff! Lane Douglas:  In episode 015 of GGR you talked about building an AR. Do you have a source for the lower casting, the part with the serial number, that will sell without first registering it through an FFL? Brownells will not sell without shipping to my FFL, ditto for a few others I have checked. I am ok with the process, just trying to avoid the $10 back ground fee, and $25 transfer fee that my FFL charges. iTunes Review: Outro: feedback@ar15podcast.com Find us on iTunes

Is there anything that can be done to increase my chances of winning? :) I got a wonderful deal on a mostly milspec AR for $500 from a friend that was desperate for some cash. Did a little work on a Glock I sold him for the price. Anyhow, I love the rifle, but while  the charging handle looks black and matches in low lighting, it is actually purple! I don't know if he cannibalized this from his wife's rifle or what, but man would I love that sweet charging handle. Anyhow, mostly joking. I did give you a five star review on iTunes and didn't even have an account with them, set it up just for you :). Love all that you do and will review your AR 15 podcast soon. Also five stars. Wonderful stuff. Thanks for everything including reading my email. Good luck with the new podcast. Seems to be going well so far. Bob:  About time! A excellent first episode. How often ?
