Welcome to Episode #070 of the AR15 Podcast.  I'm your host Reed Snyder and with me today are my co-hosts Anthony Hardy and J.W. Ramp. This is the podcast about your favorite black rifle!  This show is for you; whether you're building your first AR or you've been building ARs for years. There is something we can all do to take our black rifle to the next level. We are looking for volunteers able to do Video Editing for the AR-15 Podcast Brownells helps make this show possible.   Don’t forget that Brownells is there for you anytime you make a mistake, like when Jake shoots a take-down pin detent across his avocado green linoleum flooring and it skids under the cabinets. Optics pt.1 and 2 were amazing! I really felt like I got drunk with a bunch of my buddies and argued, and swore and had a great time, and got to really get some in depth perspective from guys that really use the tools. Every time It felt like the show was ending, you’d go on for twenty more minutes, just great! Please more show like that, for those of us who love the combat aspects of the AR platform, this episode was absolutely invaluable. Is it possible to email any of the guys, I love the ACOG, and have some reticle questions. Again, great job, love the show, and I’m so glad I discovered the podcast. Rob:  Hi, Very interesting to read in the Apr 2014 AR- American Rifleman a fairly positive review of the cheap BSA red dot. ($72. Amazon). I had looked at these as a cheap 10/22 red dot or a cheap 1st AR build Red Dot. Told they were just for air-soft. So guess they're not just for airsoft guns as soooooooooooooooooooooooo many experts have told me. Hey, And I love the name....BSA Birmingham Small Arms. Thanks...Rob Ian K:  Reed and Co., I’ve finally caught up with all the episodes, love the show, love the guests and love your commitment to the platform! Great job so far. What I don’t love is that even after going through all the shows, you have barely mentioned Noveske Rifleworks! John Noveske got his reputation not making accessories but highly accurate AR barrels! Now they produce a highly refined product with an excellent reputation. You guys spent ten minutes discussing how great the Key-mod system is and never mentioned Noveske co-developed the open source design with Vltor. I knew that when I got to ep. 50,  High End AR15s that would all change. Nope, only a brief aside, that’s it. Is there some industry bias? Anyway, not to unload on you, otherwise keep up the good work. Rob: Did I miss the CHROMED AR? As in shiny pistol. Have you done a show or discussed ALL Polymer ARs? Poly Uppers & Lowers. Have you covered angled vs. rail mounted back up sights? Have you covered the AR .410 upper?

Main Topic:  Daniel Defense https://danieldefense.com/about-daniel-defense Listener Feedback: CHRIS M. Reed, just saw my first pistol AR15 in the flesh this weekend.  Really kinda liked it.  When do you think you can do a show on them? Interested in a discussion about: 1. barrel length options 2. are there different length buffer tubes available 3. would you make any different selection for trigger control parts/bolt and bolt carrier/grip? 4. any concern over the charging handle selection since the gas system is likely vigorous and your face may be closer to the receiver if you use the buffer tube as a shortened stock. Plus any other topics you and your co-host can discover. Thanks, Chris CIPHOTO: Hi Reed and guest hosts, Since you have a "stamp collector" as a rotating guest in the AR15 podcast I thought I would send in a question about suppressors. I'd like to get a suppressor for my several AR15 5.56 rifles and also be able to use the suppressor on my .30 caliber rifles.  Obviously this means that I need to get a 7.62mm compatible can.  I love the idea of quickly moving the suppressor between rifles using quick disconnect but I see a few downsides with the quick disconnect option: 1) I don't like what I read about quick disconnects and their effect on accuracy between suppressor removal and reinstall; maybe I could get away with the slight zero changes for the AR15's but not for the bolt action .30 cal precision rifles. 2) The quick disconnects are expensive.  I'd have to come up with another $400-$600 for quick disconnects for all my rifles and I'm stuck with this quick disconnect for all future rifles.  I want something that the market is going to latch onto so I don't have an antiquated and obsolete QD system in 2 years. Here are my questions: 1) I hear the Trifecta MAAD mount allows for all options: quick disconnect, threaded, compatible with other QD mounts (i.e. AAC).  Do you guys think this is where the industry is going? 2) What are your thoughts on the Saker 7.62 compared to the other suppressors which require quick disconnect? 3) Should I just get the Saker 5.56 with QD and choose a separate threaded 7.62 supressor for all my .30 caliber precision work? http://www.silencerco.com/saker ROB: Sounds to good to be good? mgi marck hydra AR-15 review plz MICHAEL D: I am somewhat stalled out on an AR build.  My wife wanted something different.  Well, this is  different.  She wants it in .204 Ruger!  Check!  Smooth side receiver!  Check!  Wood stock set!  Check!  Heavy stainless barrel!  Check!  Gas piston system!  Oh, $#!*.  I have been completely unable to find a piston kit that fits the heavy bull barrel.  The closest seems to be one from Osprey Defense.  The Brownells website claims that it is good for a .875" barrel, but the Osprey website claims that it can handle 1" barrels.  Sadly, I have not been able to get a reply from Osprey when I emailed them about it.  Do you happen to have any ideas?

Anyways I heard the recent coating extravaganza episode and would like to share my experience with Duracoat. I have included a bunch of photos of my M1991A1 that I did myself. Very easy, and man this coating is flawless. It is now impenetrable by water, solvents, oils, and anything else that could harm it.   I did the Rust-Oleum® thing the JW spoke of. The multicam pics above are 2 different paint jobs that looked good but compromised the function. I did the tedious stencil cutting and multiple layers. It constantly peeled off and messed up the action got into all of the moving parts. I do not recommend doing Rust-Oleum® unless you want to redo it often.  So, I stripped all of the paint with Stripper ( a spray can paint stripper) I cleaned all of the oils of with brake cleaner. Please be cautious if using degreasers, they can cause rust on bare metals.  I ordered the Duracoat 2in1 from Brownells  which ran $51 after 2 day shipping. I have shot nearly 350 rounds through it since allowing it to harden for 3 days. It is easier to clean than ever and I highly recommend the Duracoat. I will be doing my AR in black Duracoat simply because of the protective barrier it adds to the firearm. Anyways if you have any questions or concerns just let me know & I would be more than happy to help. And the invitation to shoot is still open. Thanks for the podcast and all the hard work you do. Mike C: Hey guys. Great show and look forward to each episode. Any chance you could do show on Primary Arms optics? They seem to have a very good rep and are a local company for Reed (TX). I have their fairly new 2.5X CQB scope and really like it. Quick funny story. Yesterday, Friday, March 28th, I was sitting in a box blind hog hunting listening to the MS Clean episode and missed one hog and got another. Neither shot was with my AR though. Missed shot was with a traditional muzzle-loader and the kill shot was with a 20G slug gun. My AR was successful back in November. so, of all the stuff on iTunes to listen to, I chose your podcast! Anyway love the show. Reed I am in Royse City just east of DFW. Not sure if a giveaway is going on, but if so.... Joseph C: Hi guys, what's the verdict on polymer lowers for the AR-15,

Reed, J.W. and Anthony talk about coatings for your AR Welcome to Episode #067 of the AR15 Podcast.  I’m your host Reed Snyder and with me today are both of my co-Hosts, J.W. Ramp and Anthony Hardy. There is something we can all do to take our black rifle to the next level.   Brownells helps make this show possible.   Due to overwhelming demand, Jake has relented and installed new flooring.  While we here at the AR-15 podcast question why he chose linoleum, we fully support the retirement of his lime green shag carpet.  So don’t forget that Brownells is there for you anytime you make a mistake, like when Jake shoots a spring across his avacado green linoleum flooring and it skids under the cabinets. My first AR is a Colt Match Target HBAR II that I bought back in the late 1990's and is still in its 1994 AWB configuration (fixed stock and an un-threaded barrel.)  The only changes I've made were replacing the factory A2 stock with a Magpul A2 stock with a GG&G rear plate that allows me to use "HK" hook sling.  I also replaced the carbine length handguards with VLTOR CAS-V handguard.  This has given me the effect of a free float barrel without changing barrel nut or removing the delta ring.  Because the CAS-v bolts to the upper receiver where the A3 handle was originally located this allowed me to mount a BSA red-dot scope where it co-witnessed with the fixed front sight and a set of GG&G BUIS.  Say what you want about the cheap scope, but I had it putting 5 rounds into the size of a quarter at 50 yards on its brightest setting in the mid-day sun. My other AR is a Franken-gun.  It is a DPMS lower with an ACE Ltd Skeleton stock and a Magpul MOE grip.  The upper is Stag Arms 3H with a Sampson "HK Style" folding front sight mounted on railed gas block.  I replaced the carbine length fore end with Magpul MOE and mounted an older Insite Technologies M3 light at the 10 o'clock position.  I am currently running a Daniels Defense A1.5 rear sight and waiting for an NC Star 4x32 scope to arrive and see how well that works. My future build is going to be done around a 14.5 bbl with a Battle Comp A1.5 pinned to bring it up to a non NFA length of 16".  I would like to go with Rifle length gas system and create a "Disipator" but I don't believe that there would not be enough "dwell time" to reliably function, so I will most likely go with a mid-length  Do you have any recommendations as to who I should look at as far as barrels go? Anyway, I also wanted to say that the AR15 podcast is one of the many shows that I listen to each week on FRN,

I'm not interested in buying one but it got me wondering how do they work?  What pushes the bolt back forward after a round is fired?  I've only found one example of how they work but it's a all polymer model from AZ Also is there a place that I can find answers to questions like this. Sent from my iPad Steve:  Hey guys love the show, I was wondering if you could cover some of the details in building a KISS or IDF style AR. I have bought my first lower and would like to go this route for my first AR. Specifically what composes a carbine of this type, is it the lack of optics or the style of handguard? Maybe you could shed some light on this one.  Love the show. Thanks for the help FNH - FN 15 User Manual Jesse:  So, I have a story regarding a range bag... I have the Midway Competition bag, which I really love.   One day my daughter and I were at the range using the bag as a rest while shooting.   Wait, first I have to explain that we are in Massachusetts and my AR came without a flash suppressor or brake and the barrel is not threaded so I can't easily add one.   As a result, every shot comes with a 6 inch in diameter ball of fire at the end of the barrel!   Well, I was looking the other way and my daughter got something out of the side pocket in the range bag but didn't bother to zip it up.   She then proceeded to lay the rifle across the bag, well above the hanging pocket but directly above it.   When she fired, the ball of flame melted the top of the flap and the zipper!!!!  Now, I have a brand new range bag and she owns a bag that constantly reminds her to close up the bag when using it as a rifle rest… I love the show, keep up the great work! Scott:  Hey guys, I enjoyed the show on .300 blackout out and was wondering if you have any experience with a 9mm ar? Is it as simple to make my 5.56 ar into a 9mm as it is to make a .300 blackout?

It is always nice hearing your comments about items when listeners write in. I appreciated your answers to my rather long email from the suppressor show. Great advise. Two quick items - the accuwedge - this may be the best thing I've never heard of. http://www.brownells.com/rifle-parts/receiver-amp-action-parts/receiver-hardware/accu-wedges/ar-15-m16-accu-wedge-prod27507.aspx I was running my 300 Blackout upper on my lower, and noticed it wasn't as tight as I would like. Quick web search, and order and this arrived. What looks like a great and inexpensive accessory to any AR. Also - a question to J.R. - SBR's they will soon be legal in my home State, Washington. I'm assuming that if I have an SBR - I can have multiple uppers with short barrels, and one registered lower receiver - a 5.56 upper with a 10 inch barrel, and a 7 inch ACC barrel in 300 blackout  for example, but only one lower registered SBR? - Yes, I realize this is not legal advise, but what is your opinion and experience. Thanks, Jim G: Reed and JW, I discovered the AR-15 Podcast several months ago.  I have found your show content very informative.  I learn something new on every show.  Like this week, I learned more about bolt carriers.  I had seen advertisements and videos about the difference between AR-15 and M-16 bolt carriers, and how to identify them.  I never understood why the AR-15 bolt carriers had less material in them until your explanation that the government forced the manufacturers to make them that way to help keep people from converting the guns to full auto.  Thank you for the explanation.  It is that kind of content that keeps the shows interesting for me. JW, I am from Pittsburgh, and think it is great that someone from my area is helping out with the show.  I want to take some training, and would like a recommendation from you as to a good place in the Pittsburgh area to go.  I want someplace with quality instructors and a range of classes in pistol and rifle.  I bought my first AR in the fall and think training is important to the safe use of the gun.   Rob L.: AR slings show.....How's it hangin. Great idea!  Piston vs DI show plz. Another noob show 1st AR build plz. Maybe I missed are Jakes vid up? 1:7 spin. OK I know what it means. But what does it mean? Hands on theory plz. Silencers. If covered again discuss sub-sonic etc.

There is something we can all do to take our black rifle to the next level. Brownells helps make this show possible. Brownells Item of the Week: PWS Triad Flash Suppressor Shop for AR-15 parts at Brownells. Go to: ar15podcast.com/parts Tip of the Week: Try out different kinds of slings. One/Two-point, QD/latch/straps, adjustable/fixed. There’s some very nifty little gadgets that guys like PWS make to help give you more options for attaching your AR to your body. Does your sling let you transition to a sidearm, is it easy to walk around with the rifle hanging, are you muzzling yourself or others by manipulating the sling? Take time to work with your sling and a dry AR to test all the different uses you can come up with. Main Topic: Primary Weapons Systems Stacey Nagy, Regional Sales Manager Mk1 Mk2 Accessories Listener Feedback: Mike R: Great podcast on suppressors - Thought I would comment on my two most overlooked details - length and weight. I was a novice and was not able to test any suppressors. I purchased a Gemtech HVT 7.62 can. I really like the product, their service, and support. I am very happy with the performance of the suppressor. I too shoot it on my 308 caliber guns, and sub caliber firearms as well. The length and weight of the suppressor comes into play when moving with the gun, such as hunting and competition. I for one wish I has spent the few extra dollars on a titanium suppressor, as they are a considerable weight savings, in some cases half the weight. The length adds to a very unbalanced feel of the firearm when in the field as well, in my experience. That coupled with the weight lead me to cut my .243 hunting rifle barrel to 16" so with the suppressor it's not so unwieldy I think all shooters of rifles should start out with a suppressor. I started my son on his .243 with the Gemtec. It reduces recoil, and of course the sound. The added bonus of hoping for no hearing loss for my son (I have some documented loss already) was one of my main selling points on the purchase. I'm currently looking for a short, titanium can just for hunting. Also, you addressed some points of accuracy but not point of impact shift. I experience some significant point of impact changes with the can on the firearm, versus it off. So much that I have to sight in with the can, and make sure I shoot with it on. In some rifles the POI change is 6" at 100 yds. I have found no real accuracy differences, just POI shift. Keep up the great show,   Frankie in Rock Hill: Reed and JW - Just wanted you guys to know that the Silencer podcast was just awesome. It really cleared some things up for me and I like the thought of one can for multiple guns. I don't like paying two hundred dollars for a tax stamp but I dislike the thought of being locked up even more. I am on my first "build" thanks to your podcast. It's not really a build as I bought a Palmetto Complete Upper and Completed Magpul Lower. In case new listeners want to know l have less than five hundred dollars in the complete build. But I am an AR Owner! I am curious if you guys have any thoughts on the poly receivers from New Frontier? I also would like to second Arturo's request about some brand comparisons and what does more money get me? Is it like buying a store brand vs. name brand and they all come off the same assembly line? I know FN is making most (maybe all?) of Palmetto's barrels.. do you know who makes their receivers?
