Main Topic:   So you want to train with your favorite black rifle.  What kit  and gear will you need for formal instruction? Introduction: What are we talking about What are they for Why train with them (Don’t show up for training like you are a member of a wantabe militia.)  Ask what is allowed and NOT allowed.  Some training sites/ranges do NOT want you showing up in camies/BDU/warrior wear. The only two things that I will assist you in regards would be as follows: The use of conversion units did not stop in 1873, many of the 45-70 TD were conversion of muskets, they used all the surplus before making from scratch. The first conversions, in 1866, were 50-70, and were centerfire, the rimfire 50 was used in the Spencer. When you are ready to purchase, visit trapdoorcollector.com, there is an excellent forum, and Al Frasca, who owns the site, sells used rifles and carbines, along with other items, you can fully trust this man. Rob L:  Aloha Guys, Have you covered using a Ambi 45 deg safety? Like the BAD-ASS-ST AMBI SAFETY SELECTOR SHORT THROW 45°? Works, SAFE worthit?  Also, Have you used the Wheeler Eng. AR pivot & roll pin install tool? $6 or so. Replace need for full set punches & pin start tools?  Sorry if I've missed. Mike S:  Reed, I want to help with Justin\'s question about a tight gas block on his personal build.  I would guess, as you did, that the machining really was to a tight tolerance.  When that\'s the case, it can be helpful to break out some old school mechanic tricks.  Heat the gas block and ice/freeze the barrel and the gas block should slide right on. The same may help with getting a tight gas block off. Chris W:  Hello, I'm currently working on building two rifles, one .300blk SBR and a 5.56 rifle (16 or 18 inch barrel) So I also have a question for you. I'm trying to decide what barrel length to get for my SBR and I'm debating between an 8" or 10" barrel. The ballistics look great out of both, but I want my rifle to be as compact as possible even with a suppressor attached. I wonder if 2" of length is worth the additional velocity.

Found out first hand the rear dent spring are tiny missile. Thank god my wife was at work I wouldn't have wanted her to see two 44 year old brothers face down on the kitchen floor looking for that spring.  Had order a replacement as that first one is gone somewhere in the darkness of the evil tile floor. Thanks   Ian Kay:  Hi Reed, JW and Anthony, Another great an informative episode, thank you! Thanks for the SCAR profile on a show about the Stoner platform, I'm not sure why it feels ok to do that, (as opposed to any other modern battle rifle), but it just does. Clearly its easy to understand, when compared to the M4 why the Mk16 was not adopted. But the Mk17, when you need to cover a half kilometer, it looks like one of the best .30 cal rifles today. I would be interested though to compare the SR25 and a Mk17 set up in the DMR role, which one has better accuracy. My guess would be the AR, having all that gas and piston hardware hanging off the end of the Mk17 barrel can’t be that good. I’ve always appreciated how with a free float rail the AR barrel is almost naked, with little to disturb the harmonics. I’ve always been interested in the SCAR because it was trying to be a replacement, and as great as it is, still not any real improvement over the AR. In my opinion the real problem is the cartridge, if you think adopting a new rifle is difficult, consider changing the NATO standard! I especially enjoyed JWs perspective and first hand knowledge of the platform, I don’t think that a lot of people (myself included) have had the chance to try one, so his experience and insight was really appreciated. Finally, I’ve heard that the next gen SCAR will look a bit like the FNAC, non recip charging handle and the front sight moved off the gas block. Pretty cool! A few weeks ago the 2 I saw were $14-1600. I saw this one in person and think I can get it for right @ $1k after tax.   Jesse: I have listened to you guys for a long time and I have learned a lot but one thing I am confused about is the differences between the  M4 and A2 upper.   Have you guys discussed this in the past, if not can you please?     What would make me want to choose one style over the other? Another topic I would love to learn more about is barrel/gas block/forearm combinations?   It appears you can't just mix and match but I cannot find a good source of information on this topic either. Keep up the great work! Thanks, Jesse   Tom J: Hey guys Working on my second built on the cheap, what is your opinion on an upper receiver without a forward assist? Is it really needed? Keep up the good work and thank you for the somewhat new host JW and the Newbie Anthony they make the podcast more enjoyable especially since I’m somewhat of a newbie to. Listener Feedback: Myles:  Hello, been awhile since I have written in, your multi part episode on optics had me shying away for a little while. I get it, more expensive optics are better, they had better be if they cost $1,700. Personally I am quite satisfied with my $200 Minox. But on to the meat of the matter. You recently talked about levers attached to bolt releases. I have no experience with the MagPul BAD lever, however I and a friend of mine have used phase 5 levers in the past and we are not happy with them. My friend had the one piece lever, I had a cheaper unit that bolts on the stock lever. I was very happy with mine at first, but as time went by I started having malfunctions. The bolt catch failed to function every now and then. As soon as I got rid of the lever this problem went away. My friend had the same problem, which also went away when he dumped the lever. I have been told that one might be able to rectify this by installing a stronger bolt catch spring. But since that would require drifting out a retaining pin I have decided against this for now. Too bad really as the AR is much more comfortable to run with one of these thingies. I forgot to add that I thought it was a bit suspicious when the outfit that sold me the Phase 5 lever gave me about a 30% discount, and it looked like it had been sitting in a drawer since the Clinton administration.
