 ARP 034 – Peter Palma’s “MS Clean” AR15 Cleaning System | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:10:07

Steve talks about Peter Palma's new MS Cleaning System for the AR 15 rifle. Intro:  Welcome to episode #34 of the AR15 Podcast.  I’m your Firearms Radio Network Roving Correspondent Steve flying solo this week. This is THEE podcast about your favorite black rifle! This show is for you; whether you're building your first AR or you’ve been building ARs for years. There’s something we can all do to take our black rifle to the next level. Main Topic: Interview with Peter Palma of TopShot fame where we discuss his new AR15 cleaning kit MS Clean: The Magazine Shaped Cleaning Kit. MS Clean Kickstarter MS Clean Facebook Peter Palma Facebook Otis BONE Tool and O12 Carbon Remover Giveaway O12 removes stubborn carbon fouling with ease BONE tool is the quick clean tool which scrapes carbon and fouling from the bolt, bolt carrier, and firing pin of your AR15. Winner: Will B. Just wanted to throw my name in the hat for the giveaways. I do have a little feedback on the latest episode regarding what to feed the black rifle. I have heard that the twist rate of the rifling in the barrel can be effected by the weight of the projectile. I have heard recommendations of what grains work best for certain twist rates. Basically the main thing that interested me is that I read that a 1/9 twist barrel should only run 62 grain or smaller. 1/7 twist should be fine for any 5.56 or .223 bullet around, but shooters should be conscious if they have a 1/9 twist rated barrel as to what grain bullet they are running.  Is there any truth to this and if so it might be something you should make sure the listeners understand. Love the show guys and thanks for making my drives to and from work a little more bearable. Winner: Ed G. I have been enjoying the shows lately, especially the ones where you talk about different caliber options. While my son thinks it's an abomination, I've been thinking about building an upper in 9mm for my AR. That way I can shoot the same ammo I have for my pistol. How about a show on 9mm ARs? Thanks and keep up the good work, Ed G. FEEDBACK: Larry:  Reed, I finally brought home my first AR15 a new Stag Arms Model 3. I am new to AR's. Any recommendations on a first cleaning to remove the packing grease? What cleaner and lube do you recommend. I was planning on using Break Free CLP but some people say its not good for removing the packing grease they use on new ones. I know you did a great show on cleaning but I am mainly concerned about a first time preshoot cleaning. Thanks for any help you can provide and keep putting out a great show. Richard J:  Just saw this in the Texas Fish & Game 'Gun Report' email newsletter I get. http://fishgame.com/gunnews/?p=2464&utm_campaign=newsletter130715&utm_medium=email&utm_source=newsletter130715 I think I've heard Reed and Steve talk about a new gun club in Frisco... Is there an industry trend toward upscale facilities?   Rod: Hey Reed, This is Rod from San Antonio. Great podcast, been listening since the start. Regarding the podcast on feeding the black rifle, I happen to have a copy of an e-book written by an Army officer who worked on the development of the M-855 green tip round. I found it very interesting. The document was offered as a free download from the author's website, which appears to not be up anymore. It is in .mobi format for the kindle but if you have a different e-reader there is a program called Calibre, which is free and can convert documents into other e-reader formats. And please enter me into the contest for the OTIS gear. Thanks for the great work you guys do on the podcast!   Bryan (Canadian Service Conditions Radio): In Episode 32 you talked about mono-podding on the magazine for prone shooting. Thank-you for sharing that with the listeners. Shooters competing in Service Rifle events up here in Canada are generally all taught this technique. Certainly all the really competitive shooters use it. Occasionally I do still run into folks who hold to the old wives tale that resting on the mag will cause stoppages. I usually just respond by saying "Okay, if you want to handicap yourself, go right ahead. Let's get out and shoot together and put some money on who does better" The only other method that comes close is a tight sling technique which is very stable but is tiring and hard to adopt quickly.

AR-15 Training Tip of the Week: http://www.shootingillustrated.com/index.php/26585/modified-navy-qualification-drill/ By  Adam Heggenstaller Modified Navy Qualification Drill The drill was developed by former Navy SEAL Jeff Gonzales. The MNQ Drill is intended to be shot with an AR or other semi-automatic. The MNQ Drill incorporates three firing positions, magazine changes, some movement and a timer to add a bit of stress. There’s a lot going on in this drill, but you’ll need only 15 rounds to shoot it. Place a target with an 8-inch center zone at 50 yards. (A paper plate stapled to the chest area of a silhouette target works great.) Load three magazines with five rounds each. At the firing line, assume a low-ready position with the rifle loaded. When the buzzer sounds, fire five rounds from the standing position. Reload, and fire five rounds from the kneeling position. Reload again, and fire your last five rounds from the prone position. The clock stops when you fire your final shot from prone. The par time for the MNQ Drill is 25 seconds, and only hits in the 8-inch target zone count. You start with a score of 0, and are penalized for misses and time over par. The goal is to keep your score as low as possible. Add 5 points for every miss and 2 points for every second over par. Subtract 1 point for every second under par. For example, if you shoot the drill in 35 seconds with two misses, your score would be 30—20 points for the 10 seconds over par and 10 points for the pair of misses. If you shoot the drill clean in 22 seconds, your score would be -3. Gonzales is the president of Trident Concepts, a training academy based in Cedar Park, TX, and he uses the MNQ Drill to gauge the skill level of both his students and instructors. To qualify as a marksman, a student must score 25 to 40 points. A good goal for beginners is to make the 40-point cutoff, keeping in mind each miss hurts the score more than each second over par. At Trident Concepts, a score of 10 to 24 qualifies you as a sharpshooter. To make the expert level, you’ll need a score of 9 or lower.  ARP 028 – Chambered in 6.5mm | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 56:10

Welcome to episode #28 of the AR15 Podcast. I’m your host Reed Snyder with my special Co-host Brad West from the Firearms Radio Network IT team. This is THEE podcast about your favorite black rifle! This show is for you; whether you're building your first AR or you’ve been building ARs for years. There’s something we can all do to take our black rifle to the next level. AR-15 Training Tip of the Week: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TuNSB9jkpyQ Jerry Miculek’s homepage:  http://miculek.com/about-us/ Shoutout: http://www.gundigest.com/gun-cleaning-kit Main Topic:  6.5mm and what that means to the average MSR owner 6.5mm Grendel: Can use standard AR magazines with a modified follower. Originally designed for proficiency from 200 - 800 yards, but is accurate well beyond that. Introduced at SHOT show 2004, Wolf and Hornady now make a variety of rounds. Case derived from the .220 Russian (fired in the Russian bullpup shown below) which was derived from the 7.62x39. 6.5mm Creedmoor: Capable of duplicating the trajectory of the .300 Win Magnum but with less recoil. Requires an  AR-10 form factor, cartridge based on the 308 cartridge. Larger case and other factors may provide for a larger performance envelope than Grendel. .264 LBC-AR: Virtually identical to the Grendel Supported by Hornady and Black Hills Ammunition Rifles chambered in this caliber are built by Les Baer Custom 6.5mm TCU: .223 case necked up to 6.5 Should work in standard MSR with a barrel change only. Cartridges are highly localized to competition arena so not much commercial availability.   Listener Feedback: Chuck Earley: Maybe I missed it in a past episode but if you could discuss AR15 and AR10 magazine compatibility, I'd appreciate some more knowledge in that area . Thanks for your time and keep up the great work y’all.  Tom B: Hey guys, Great show. Was it your show that I heard about an M4 Carbine Chart on Google? If so I googled it and there are several and none of which seem to be what you mentioned.   If I remember you stated it should be studied?  So I was looking for a reference?  I have no AR so I thought I would study. If this was not your show I apologize.  I listen to three different shows so I may be wrong.  Thanks Alex in Austin: Hi guys, Been listening to the gun guys radio and AR15 podcast the show for a while, you guys are doing a good job.  I would really like to hear an episode on the topic of building an SPR, particularly from someone that was involved in the original Mark 12 program (see http://mk12.net/).  I'm working on designing and building an SPR now, fortunately my co worker's sister owns Shilen Barrel Company so I'll likely go to the factory to watch my barrel being worked on.  One of the biggest mysteries for me with this build is designing the gas system.  I will have to cut a 20" barrel down to 18" and I want to make sure that I size the gas port correctly and also consider adjustable gas blocks.  You can see how this build can quickly spiral into a thought-a-thon....one thing is for sure, it will have a Geissele trigger, Thanks. Richard J: Hello, Steve and Reed. I've been listening to the AR15 podcast since the first episodes (I started listening to Gun Guy Radio when it first started and now listen to most of the shows on the Firearms Radio Network). Hearing about Glenn in OK inviting you up to shoot sparked an idea. Do you think there would be any interest from listeners local to Dallas/Fort Worth to meet up some weekend? I don't yet have an AR, and it would be awesome to see a variety of rifles and compare features. Ryan: Hey Reed, I was just listening to your latest ar-15 podcast and you had a Canadian listener who was asking about hunting rifles that use a standard AR magazine. Mossberg makes a line of rifles called the MVP that is just that, a bolt action hunting rifle using an AR mag.

 ARP 027 – Proper Care and Maintenance of the AR-15 Part 1 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:06:19

Reed and Steve discuss the proper care and maintenance of your AR-15. Welcome to episode #27 of the AR15 Podcast.  I’m your host Reed Snyder with Co-host Steve from Gun Guy Radio. This is THEE podcast about your favorite black rifle! This show is for you; whether you're building your first AR or you’ve been building ARs for years. There’s something we can all do to take our black rifle to the next level. Shout out to Glenn in Lawton Oklahoma   AR-15 Training Tip of the Week: - Even though many magazine are considered to hold 30 rounds, they should never be loaded to this maximum capacity.  This can lead to the spot welds on the back of aluminum mags failing and quickly emptying your ammo to the ground.  This can also be the cause of your rifle being unable to chamber a new round because the pressure on the top round is too great for the bolt carrier group, buffer, and buffer spring to overcome. - Load you mags with no more than 28 rounds and you should have NO issues at all.  Many law enforcement agencies across the country note in policy that duty loads should be between 25 and 28 rounds. Main Topic: Make Weapon Safe Open the Bolt Check the chamber for a stray round both Visually and Manually Close the Bolt Field Strip Disengage the takedown pin and the pivot pin Separate the upper from the lower Remove the Bolt Carrier Group followed by the Charging Handle Remove the firing pin retaining pin Remove the firing pin Twist the bolt until the cam pin is no longer obstructed by the bolt carrier key Rotate the cam pin 90 degrees and pull away from the BCG Pull the bolt away from the bolt carrier Push the detent in front of the buffer and remove the buffer and buffer spring Remove handguards (if removable, that is) General Tips cleaning is also your chance to inspect parts of the gun you normally don’t see wipe down fire control group with a q-tip just to make sure there are no unknown metal shavings in there and to make sure their is a sufficient amount of semi-clean lube wipe down inside of mag-well and inspect for smoothness, no scratches or burrs should be present remove buffer and spring from tube and wipe down/inspect for flaws for the upper, use chamber brush clean from breech to muzzle BONE tool cleaning (inside the bolt carrier where the bolt rides, the bolt, and the firing pin) I spray Gun Scrubber down the gas tube, let it work and drain out the barrel (careful where you point the barrel), then a drop or 2 of oil with muzzle point down to keep things rust free push extractor retaining pin out with firing pin, clean and inspect extractor and extractor spring   Listener Feedback: Mike: Greetings, I've just come upon your podcast and have listen to two so far. I am mostly impressed. I'm new to the AR community so have lots to learn to be sure. I have an overall very positive impression at this point. Just would like to give some feedback after listening to the Now is a good time to build an AR. My negative comments come from the end of the show about the giveway. Do you add an individual\'s name multiple times if they send in \"x\" # of AR pics? Doesn\'t seem to me to meet the intent of what you want to accomplish with this giveaway...does it? I mean the guy who has a safe full of ARs hardly needs another? I might suggest you limit it to one pic one entry just to even things out. And it did go downhill a bit for me when it got to suggesting chick pics. I would hope you guys pass on that. Anyhow, I do plan to listen to a bunch of the episodes to get caught up. And I would like to comment that in regards to building an AR...it is damn near impossible to find a Left Hand build kit anywhere. Now again...I'm sure there are places you guys know of to obtain a kit. If so then do let me know. A request I have is maybe you could do a podcast on assembling the must have AR build tools/items need to assemble an AR from scratch.
