A great old song which I play mostly in a two-finger picking style. The vocal harmonies are inspired by the fairly recent recording of this song by Robert Earl Keen and Natalie Maines of The (Dixie) Chicks.
My first upload!
As played by A.J. Hoggs from the Samuel Bayard collections of SW Pennsylvania, I'm always glad to learn a tune from my father's neck-of-the-woods. This Tune of the Week has roots around the time of the Civil War. Perhaps it was played on fife as well as fiddle. It sounds like a good marching tune.
Double D tuning. Played on a new hand crafted Black Limba wood 11" open back banjo.
I put this together as a demo for the bluegrass jam group that I'm a member of: www.svbluejam.com

The modern recordings of Ducks on the Millpond are great listening, and my first round through comes from them, in particular Rayna Gellert. Going back to the older for this week's Tune of the Week was also interesting. Virginia fiddler Emmett Lundy always portrayed tunes uniquely in both his rhythmic nuances and note choices. You'll hear the next three parts as he played them, arranged here for clawhammer banjo.
Tried a audio recording of me playing Cripple Creek, Old Joe Clark, and A Seeger-ish version of leather britches I came up with because there was no tab out there. I purposely went a bit fast on them all.
This traditional Cajun waltz sings of the sad loss of a loved one. I like its melody and found it easy to play on clawhammer banjo.
Double C tuning and played on old pot/new neck banjo with a skin head.
An easy little classical piece by Carolan. Key of G. gDGBD
Multitrack recording of a tune by Old Time fiddler Paul Kirk. The title honors not the American President, but instead, in Paul's words, "the bald eagle mascot of the 8th Wisconsin Regiment during the American Civil War." Fiddle (ADAE), Guitar, Banjo (aDADE), (soft melody) hammered dulcimer, Michael Allen Marimbula/Bass.
