Clawhammer style, gDGCD (relative). 1964 Gibson RB-175.

John Hardy (TOTW) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

From another time when Plinky & Plunky used to perform this ballad....I haven't sung it in years, but for the sake of TOTW, here is our version, less Plinky whose arthritic hands don't want to play mandolin these days.

Cripple Creek 2 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown
Boll Weevil (TOTW) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

From the fiddle playing of Tommy Jarrell and Jake Blount, and when the singing is added Boll Weevil tells the plight of the farmer victimized by the insect pests that destroyed his cotton crop.

Falls of Richmond | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

2F version of Falls of Richmond as arranged by Nick Hornbuckle with Band-in-a-Box accompaniment

Donkey Reel | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown
Cousin Sally Brown (Gaither Carlton)(TOTW) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

Many of us know a Cousin Sally Brown with an evocative modal tuning. This is a different melody. The source is Gaither Carlton, to me known as the father-in-law of the more famous Doc Watson. My arrangements here come from Gaither, Doc, and another banjo player of the region, Calvin Cole. I'm playing on the slower side. Check out the TOTW to hear more, especially Paul Brown.

The Navvie On The Line | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

Not really a hornpipe, not the structure of a rag, maybe a rustic dance probably of Northumbrian origin. Good for Morris dancing, good for "dots and triplets" players… Download my tab here.

Old Dan Tucker | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown
London Hornpipe (TOTW) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

This old tune goes by other titles, but I chose the recording made by the great Missouri fiddler Cyril Stinett. I tried to eliminate some of the notes so typical for Ozark hornpipes and managed to simplify by using the 5th string as a kind of a drone.

Sugar Hill | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

Double D tuning. Played on 11" open back. Aluminum pot with vintage neck.
