Systemizing your approach to management | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:01:34

My guest on the Business901 podcast was Bill Dettmer Senior Partner of Goal Systems International. Bill is one of the most recognized expert in the Theory of Constraints field and more specifically the Logical Thinking Process. He has Eight years graduate level teaching of systems management, systems analysis, human factors, management control systems, organizational behavior and development, Theory of Constraints, Total Quality Management, and management of research, development, testing, and evaluation. More importantly, he brings a level of experience to these subjects that few in the world are able too. His simple recommendation of one book on the practice of utilizing a systems approach to management immersed me into over 12 hours of reading, research and learning. I have not been that captivated in a particular subject for quite awhile. I hope you enjoy the podcast as much as I did hosting it.. Bill is the author of  The Logical Thinking Process: A Systems Approach to Complex Problem Solving ) and Strategic Navigation: A Systems Approach to Business Strategy , two books around which Goal Systems International's internationally renowned Thinking Process Course is based; Brainpower Networking Using the Crawford Slip Method . Co-author (with Eli Schragenheim and Wayne Patterson) of Manufacturing at Warp Speed: Optimizing Supply Chain Financial Performance (The CRC Press Series on Constraints Management) and Supply Chain Management at Warp Speed: Integrating the System from End to End.  Transforming Healthcare thru Lean | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:38:27

John Toussaint, M.D., CEO of the ThedaCare Center for Healthcare Value was my Podcast guest this week. From 2000 to 2008, Dr. Toussaint served as president and chief executive officer of ThedaCare, Inc., a community-owned, four-hospital health system including twenty-one physician clinics, as well as home health capabilities, senior care facilities, hospice care, and behavioral health. ThedaCare is the largest employer in Northeast Wisconsin with nearly 5,400 employees, serving an eight-county region. During his tenure as president and CEO of ThedaCare, Dr. Toussaint introduced the ThedaCare Improvement System (TIS), which is derived from the Toyota Production System. This model of continuous improvement helped save millions of dollars in healthcare costs by reducing patient errors, improving outcomes and delivering better quality care at a higher value. Dr. Toussaint’s new book, On the Mend: Revolutionizing Healthcare to Save Lives and Transform the Industry, co-authored with Roger A. Gerard, PhD. describes the triumphs and stumbles of a seven-year journey to lean healthcare, an effort that continues today. Any Continuous Improvement participant can benefit from reading this book. I have read it twice! In the podcast, we discussed the “How to” of these achievements and what they learned form their failures. About Healthcare Value Leaders: The partnership between the Lean Enterprise Institute (LEI) and the ThedaCare Center for Healthcare Value (TCHV) brings together two of the world's leaders in "lean thinking," with a combined 20 years of experience in lean implementation and education. Working in partnership allows LEI and the TCHV to leverage their unique perspectives and not-for-profit missions to accomplish a shared goal of fundamentally improving healthcare delivery through lean thinking.  Removing Uncertainty in your Decision Making | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:50:30

I had great pleasure of having Eli Schragenheim on the Business901 Podcast. Eli has been part of the Theory of Constraints movement practically from the beginning. He started working with Dr. Goldratt as a programmer to program a game for adults that would teach them how to think over 25 years ago. During the podcast we dove into the subject of Uncertainty! A great discussion, that affects our everyday life and how it relates to forecasting and even our intuition. From the Podcast: We cannot really predict the future. We can predict some reasonable range of the future needed to make a decision. This is hard for forecasting. Forecasting is an unbelievably important tool for managers, but again they need to understand what does it mean and what does it contain and how wrong could it be. In the past 25 years, Eli Schragenheim has taught, spoken at conferences, and consulted in more than 15 countries, including the United States, Canada, India, China, and Japan. He has also developed software simulation tools especially designed to experience the thinking of TOC, and consultant with several application software companies to develop the right TOC functionality in their own packages. Mr. Schragenheim was a partner in the A. Y. Goldratt Institute and is now a Director of Goldratt schools. He is the author of Management Dilemmas: The Theory of Constraints Approach to Problem Identification and Solutions. He recently collaborated with William Detmer and Wayne Patterson on the book Supply Chain Management at Warp Speed: Integrating the System from End to End. The new book contains much of the new development of TOC and operations.  In a Supply Chain, ask Where not How Much | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 55:08

Carol Ptak is first and foremost a thought leader. You will find in the podcast that Carol is engaging and informative having an extensive background in Supply Chain. It was one of my most informative podcasts full of fresh ideas, examples and usable material. Even though it centered around Supply Chain most of the principles can easily be applied in other areas such as operations and even marketing.        In her other life, she is a Visiting Professor and Executive in residence at Pacific Lutheran University, a farmer and dog trainer. This is after years of experience in management at PeopleSoft and IBM Corp as well as many years of consulting expertise. At PeopleSoft, she developed the concept of Demand Driven Manufacturing, as an overall product and marketing strategy to align product development, market awareness, and demand generation. Her innovative approach is credited with significantly improving the companies position in the manufacturing industry software market and earned her national recognition in publications such as CFO Magazine and the New York Times. Our discussion centered around Actively Synchronized Replenishment(ASR) a new way of thinking for supplying chain management. It provides an alternative demand driven approach for planning and controlling mature overflow and contrasted to the poor business results embedded in most traditional material requirements planning systems. She co-authored a chapter with Chad Smith in the Theory of Constraints Handbook and has authored and co-authored books such as Necessary but Not Sufficient: A Theory of Constraints Business Novel, The Quantum Leap: Next Generation and several others. She has been asked by McGraw-Hill and presently updating Orlicky's Material Requirements Planning. You can also purchase just this chapter: Integrated Supply Chain (Chapter 12 of Theory of Constraints Handbook). ASR Website: http://beyondMRP.com P.S.
