The 1 On: Suffering - Too Good to Be True / Michael Horton | File Type: video/mp4 | Duration: 25:45

Dr. Michael Horton, Professor at Westminster Theological Seminary, concludes with part 4 of "The 1 On: Suffering" series. Dr. Horton explains that in the present day where the world constantly promises better things, the Church is also expected to tell of a God who is there to make people happy. Dr. Horton speaks on John 11:17-37 and on how God's role in a Christian's life is not one of a supporting actor, but rather that suffering is a subplot in God's big story and not vice-versa. He explains that each person's micro-story is part of the macro-story of redemption, so that in all times of suffering and pain, people are not the point of the story, they are just the supporting characters who are drawn into Jesus' story of redemption. Dr. Horton challenges the Biola community to see their suffering in light of Jesus' sacrifice and resurrection.

Dr. Hutchison speaks from Romans 5:3-5 and on how suffering produces perseverance which leads to character building. He exhorts the Biola community to learn to not to waste the experiences that God has brought their way in the form of suffering. In session #2 of the Torrey Conference 2009, Kay Warren, from Saddleback Church, speaks on "The Treasures of Darkness" (Isaiah 45:3) and on how God uses intense suffering to reveal the great wealth that is hidden in secret places. She explains that to realize that they are fully known by God is the treasure that must be kept close in times of darkness. Kay Warren challenges the Biola community to change their perspective of suffering in light of 1 Corinthians 13:12. She encourages them to not get stuck in the darkness by dwelling only on the pain, sorrow, loss and disappointment, but to instead let their perspective focus on this verse and the truth that God has promised to give treasures that are hidden in the darkness.

Dr. Steve Porter, Associate Professor of Philosophy and Theology at Biola University, begins with part 1 in the series "The 1 On: Suffering". He warns the Biola community to beware of the devil's aim of making Heaven seem as an undesirable and boring place to be and explains that God's plan for believers in the Kingdom of God is for them to reign over His Kingdom with Jesus.

The 1 On: Defending the Faith - Was Jesus an Advocate of Blind Faith? / Craig J Hazen | File Type: video/mp4 | Duration: 28:08

Dr. Craig Hazen, Director of the M.A. program in Christian Apologetics at Biola University, begins with part 1 of "The 1 On: Defending the Faith" series. In a day when Christians are constantly told by unbelievers (and sometimes within churches) that "faith" has nothing to do with real knowledge, the words and deeds of Jesus in Mark 2 and elsewhere overturn this idea. Jesus wanted people to "know" -- in the most tangible and vivid sense -- the truth about God. Dr. Hazen states that Christianity is a knowledge tradition. He explains that it is not necessary to leap blindly into faith because not only can we know it to be true internally through a powerful experience of the Holy Spirit, but that it is also possible to know them externally through a trail of evidence that God has left throughout history so that humans can know these things to be true.
