Read on: During the winter of 1941/42, the Second World War comes to a temporary standstill on the Eastern Front yet both Nazi and Soviets are putting everything they got in order to turn the tide in their favour. To counter this plan, special occult branch of the Soviet Intelligence, called 6th Division, deploys it's best agent - 14-year-old esper girl Nadya, the only survivor from the special operations unit of 6th Division - the "First Squad". A fantastic and classic Miyazaki movie, Porco Rosso is up on the cutting block today, shall this piece of bacon be? During the beginning years of the Great Depression, life in the Mediterranean has become difficult. Aerial pirate raids are gaining in frequency, thus requiring the need for capable "bodyguards". One of the best is a pig known as Porco Rosso. Once a human and an ace pilot during World War I, he now freelances his services to those in distress. The fascist regime that has taken over the Italian Air Force has grown tiresome of his exploits and places a bounty on his head. On top of that, a hotshot flyer from the United States arrives and not only wants to steal Porco Rosso's glory, but also the woman he loves so dearly. In a futuristic society, a 15-year-old prostitute named Rune Balot is rescued after being nearly killed. She is subconsciously given the choice to continue living due to an emergency ordinance to preserve life called Mardock Scramble 09. Turned into a cyborg, Balot is then given the choice of assisting the investigations against the man who tried to terminate her. OMG we're back. Its been a hectic first month of 2013 but after all the excitement the guys are back to reviewing new / fascinating / sometimes good anime. This week they review Ga-Rei-Zero (TV).  Synopsis below. Ga Rei Zero (2008) is a dark, supernatural adventure, based on a manga by Hajime Segawa. Fate and heredity dictate that teenager Kagura Tsuchimiya must become a Vanquisher, a member of an elite core dedicated to fighting supernatural monsters that menace Tokyo. During their training, she and Yomi Isayama adopt each other as sisters, sharing secrets and Pocky Sticks. But Yomi is seduced by a mysterious boy who offers her a "Bane Stone," an enchanted gem that increases her powers but devours her soul. Inevitably, she and Kagura must meet in a duel only one can survive. Although the tone, theme, and characters in Ga Rei Zero recall numerous other anime series, the story is hopelessly muddled and badly told. It's difficult to keep track of the cast, as the filmmakers keep offing characters they've just introduced: Ga Rei Zero has a body count approaching Hellsing's. Kagura, who fusses and whines, even when her life is threatened, is hardly an endearing character, and Yomi looks and sounds like someone from Anime Central Casting. After 12 episodes, the audience has no idea who the evil boy with the Bane Stones is, why he's always surrounded by blue butterflies, or why he's out to cause so much trouble. A peak achievement of Japanese anime, Ninja Scroll is a propulsive mix of samurai action adventure and supernatural fantasy from writer-director Yoshiaki Kawajiri (Supernatural Best City). This is defiantly animation for grown-ups, complete with fountains of blood, plenty of naked flesh, and (in both the subtitled and dubbed versions) some decidedly strong language.
