Learn Norwegian with NorwegianClass101! Don't forget to stop by NorwegianClass101.com for more great Norwegian Language Learning Resources! -------Lesson Dialog------- ----Formal ---- Vikingskipmuseet Vikingskipmuseet ligger i Oslo. ----Formal English---- Viking Ship Museum Norway's Viking Ship Museum is located in Oslo. It's actually part of the larger Museum of Cultural History, which is located at University of Oslo. Inside the museum, visitors will find many different artifacts, including some important items from the Borre mound cemetery, Tune, and Oseberg. The Viking Ship Museum's main attractions include the three ships from Tune, Gokstad, and Oseberg. One of the reasons so many tourists decide to stop in at the Viking Ship Museum is because of the completely intact Viking ship located there. There is also quite a large exhibition of items from the Viking Age, including everything from sledges and horse carts to beds, carvings, and even buckets. A number of grave goods are also on display there. The museum dates back to 1913 when a professor from Sweden suggested that most of Norway's artifacts from the Viking Age be collected into one location. Two of the Viking ships had been stored previously at the University of Oslo in temporary shelters. The museum was constructed in sections, starting with the hall where the Oseberg ship is housed. That hall was finished 1926, aand the halls for two more ships were finished in 1932. The museum's last hall was put on hold until 1957, mostly because of World War II. That final hall is where most of the loose artifacts can be found. Aside from the three Viking ships, there is also a working boatyard where visitors can watch reconstructions of prehistoric boats actually being built in full scale. The yard also uses old building techniques to build new boats. --------------------------- Learn Norwegian with NorwegianClass101!  Advanced Audio Blog #21 - Top 10 Norwegian Tourist Destinations: Briksdalsbreen | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 2:41

Learn Norwegian with NorwegianClass101! Don't forget to stop by NorwegianClass101.com for more great Norwegian Language Learning Resources! I stedet for å trekke tilbake slik andre isbreer i verden gjorde, fortsatte Briksdalsbreen å vokse. Innsjøen ligger ca. 350 meter over havet. ----Formal English---- The Birksdal Glacier An arm of Norway's Jostedalsbreen glacier, the Briksdalsbreen or Briksdal glacier is a well-known glacier that made the news in the 1990s. Instead of receding like other glaciers around the world, the Briksdalsbreen was growing. That trend has changed, as the glacier began to retreat again in 2000 and has continued that trend up until the present. Located in the northwestern county of Sogn og Fjordane in the municipality of Stryn, Briksdalsbreen lies in the Briksdalen (Briks Valley). As part of the Jostedalsbreen, it's also part of the Jostedalsbreen National Park. It is fifteen miles south of Olden village, 310 miles from Oslo (approximately an eight-hour trip), and 280 miles from Trondheim (approximately a seven-hour trip). Briksdalsbreen terminates in the lake Briksdalsbrevatnet, which was formed by the glacier's receding between 1934 and 1951, when it moved back by 2600 feet. Breathtaking waterfalls pour into the lake from over the edges of the glacier, creating a picturesque panorama. The lake is located 1135 feet above sea level. The glacier has receded over most of its recorded history, and its size is dependent on both precipitation and temperature. As the glacier continues its overall recession, some speculate that it will disconnect from its parent glacier, the Jostedalsbreen. Guided walks and ice climbs are available to explore Briksdalsbreen, along with horse rides to the glacier's foot. While this isn't necessarily discernible, glaciers are in constant motion; you should take a tour of one only with an experienced guide. --------------------------- Learn Norwegian with NorwegianClass101! Tidligere artister inkluderer Asian Dub Foundation, The Hives, Röyksopp, Yoko Ono, Beck, Mogwai, Susanne Sundfør, Mew, Kanye West, og Håkan Hellström. ----Formal English---- The Oya Festival Taking place in the heart of Oslo, Norway, the Oya Festival (or Øyafestivalen in Norwegian) is a music festival that began in 1999. It draws tens of thousands to the Medieval Park (Middelaldparken) in Oslo and has rapidly become one of Norway's largest festivals. From 1999 to 2001 it was actually held in Kalvøya, an island in a bay of the inner Oslofjord. It moved to Oslo proper in 2002 and takes place over four days at four different stages (Sjøsiden, Enga, Vika, and Odden) in the summer. It draws over eighty bands from around Norway and the world. The Oya Festival has established itself as an environmentally committed festival, with organic food, recyclable materials, and yearly reuse of materials like banners. Its organizers take care to protect the Medieval Park, the local historic site that hosts it, throughout the festival. It is a mere ten-minute walk from the Oslo Central Station in the oldest part of Oslo. The concerts begin at midday and continue on until eleven P.M.., after which attendees have to vacate the park. Other green initiatives by the festival organizers include the Oya card, which offers you lower public transit fares during your stay in Oslo; eco-friendly sunblock; and diaper-change stands. All ages are welcome to attend; in fact, the entrance fee is waived for children under twelve who come with an adult. As mentioned earlier, a variety of artists perform at the Oya Festival. Past performers have included Asian Dub Foundation, The Hives, Röyksopp, Yoko Ono, Beck, Mogwai, Susanne Sundfør, Mew, Kanye West, and Håkan Hellström. --------------------------- Learn Norwegian with NorwegianClass101!
