Advanced Audio Blog #14 - Top 10 Finnish Holidays: Snellman Day | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 2:58

Learn Finnish with FinnishPod101! Don't forget to stop by FinnishPod101.com for more great Finnish Language Learning Resources! -------Lesson Dialog------- ----Formal ---- Snellmanin päivä Toukokuun 12. päivä on Snellmanin päivä Johan Vilhelm Snellmanin syntymäpäivän kunniaksi. Tsaari Nikolai I:n kuoltua sensuuria hellitettiin ja Snellman nimitettiin professoriksi Helsingin yliopistoon vuonna 1856. Vuonna 1863 Snellman nimitettiin hallituksen tehtäviin senaattoriksi. Snellmanin onnistui saada suomenkieli viralliseksi kieleksi ruotsinkielen rinnalle Suomessa. Vuonna 1960 Snellmanin kuva koristi kolikkoa ensimmäistä kertaa markan satavuotisjuhlan kunniaksi. Vuonna 2006 lyötiin Johan Vilhelm Snellmanin muistokolikko hänen syntymänsä 200-vuotisjuhlan kunniaksi. ----Formal English---- Snellman Day May 12 is Snellman Day, in honor of the birthday of Johan Vilhelm Snellman. It is also referred to as Day of Finnishness. Johan Snellman was a teacher, statesman, philosopher, and journalist who worked to make Finnish the national language of Finland. Johan Snellman was born May 12, 1806 in Stockholm. His family moved to Finland in 1813. This crusade was known as the Fennoman movement, and it was a controversial issue during a time of censorship. Finnish was basically unused outside of religious ceremonies, and Snellman believed it was important to make Finnish a national language in order to unite the nation. Snellman's newspaper was censored by the government and shut down. He temporarily took exile in Sweden and Germany after his lectureship at the University of Helsinki was recalled. When Czar Nicholas I died, censorship relaxed, and Snellman was appointed a professor at the University of Helsinki in 1856. In 1863, Snellman was appointed to a cabinet post as senator. Snellman was able to establish Finnish as a national language of equal status with Swedish in Finland, in addition to introducing a separate Finnish currency, the Markka. Snellman was remarkably popular as a lecturer and professor and came to be greatly valued and respected as a senator. Unfortunately, his time as Finance Minister was diminished by a terrible famine, one of the worst in Finnish history. In 1960 Snellman's portrait first appeared on a coin to celebrate the centennial anniversary of the markka. In 2006 the Johan Vilhelm Snellman commemorative coin was minted to honor the 200th anniversary of Snellman's birth. --------------------------- Learn Finnish with FinnishPod101!  Advanced Audio Blog S2 #18 - Top 10 Finnish Writers: Bo Carpelan | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 2:33

Learn Finnish with FinnishPod101! Don't forget to stop by FinnishPod101.com for more great Finnish Language Learning Resources! ----Formal English---- Bo Carpelan Bo Gustaf Bertelsson Carpelan, better known simply as Bo Carpelan, was a Finnish writer who actually composed his work in the Swedish language. So far he is the only person to receive the Finlandia Prize two times. He also received the European Prize for Literature in 2006. He was born in the Finnish capital of Helsinki. His family lived a very modest lifestyle, and they teetered on the brink of poverty during the Great Depression. Carpelan became interested in books while he was still young, and he went on to study literature at the University of Helsinki. He received his Master's Degree after World War II and then went on to study in the United Kingdom, the United States, and France, eventually earning his doctorate degree. Carpelan's first book was a compilation of his poems, many of which were characterized by despair. After that initial book of poetry, he turned to prose, first penning two children's books before turning to work for adults. His apocalyptic radio play Voices at the Late Hour continued the theme of depression and despair that was common throughout the six decades of his career. Carpelan based his famous book Axel on his great uncle, who was also a baron and a close friend of the famous composer Jean Sibelius. However, although his great uncle had the title of baron, he was just as penniless as Carpelan's family. Carpelan's great uncle wasn't the only one with ties to a composer. The composer Aulis Sallinen wrote music for Carpelan's poem "Winter was Hard." --------------------------- Learn Finnish with FinnishPod101!  Advanced Audio Blog S2 #16 - Top 10 Finnish Writers: Timo K. Mukka | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 2:54

Learn Finnish with FinnishPod101! Don't forget to stop by FinnishPod101.com for more great Finnish Language Learning Resources! -------Lesson Dialog------- ----Formal ---- Timo K. Mukka Suomalainen kirjailija, Timo K. Mukka, syntyi itse asiassa Bollnäsissä, Ruotsissa vuonna 1944. ----Formal English---- Timo K. Mukka Finnish writer Timo K. Mukka was actually born in Bollnas, Sweden in 1944. His family had been evacuated to Sweden during World War II, and in spite of being a Finn by nationality, he was born in Sweden. Sadly, he only lived to be twenty-eight years old, and he only wrote for about six years. Most of his books dealt with sex, religion, and death in some way. He was extremely artistic, even from a very young age, and he learned to read before he even started school. When he was just eleven years old, he read Crime and Punishment by Dostoevsky, and he enjoyed it so much that he asked the librarian if they had any more books by Dostoevsky. In 1957, when he was thirteen years old, Mukka got cerebral meningitis, which drastically affected his personality and caused him to attempt suicide a year later. At the age of sixteen, he wrote his first novel, although it was rejected by publishers. When he was seventeen years old, Mukka enrolled in the School of the Fine Arts Academy, and he was more than just a writer. He was also a painter. Because of his affliction, his moods altered between extreme depression and utter happiness. His first published book came out when he was nineteen years old. The Earth is a Sinful Song came out to mixed reviews, but it sold extremely well. Throughout the next nine years of his life, he published a handful of additional books while continuing with his self-destructive behaviors, like chain smoking, imbibing excessive amounts of coffee, and not sleeping. Criticism and a harsh magazine article about him finally pushed him into having a heart attack, which killed him in 1973. --------------------------- Learn Finnish with FinnishPod101!
