Joulupukin kylä, jossa itse "joulupukki" vierailee päivittäin, on avoinna vuoden ympäri. Lapinkävijät voivat käydä myös Sallan poropuistossa katsomassa poroja ja vaeltaa 200 hehtaarin kokoisen puiston poluilla. Päärakennuksen näyttelyistä ja esityksistä saa arvokasta tietoa poroista. Ranuan eläinpuistossa on pohjoisten ja arktisten ilmastojen eläimiä, kuten jääkarhuja, napakettuja, ilveksiä, villisikoja, lumihanhia ja sopuleita. Eläinpuisto ja poropuisto ovat avoinna ympäri vuoden. ----Formal English---- LAPLAND The northernmost territory of Finland, Lapland is the least populated with an estimated population of 184,000 people spread over an area of 98,984 square kilometers. It borders Norway, Sweden, and Russia and is home to the Sami people. An indigenous people of the arctic, the Sami people traditionally live throughout the border regions of these countries. Their ancestors, the Komsa, are believed to have moved into this region around 10,000 B.C. Other peoples considered indigenous to northern Europe include the Samoyedic peoples of Russia and the Komi peoples of the western Russia and of Kazakhstan in the Ural Mountain region. The culture of Lapland has greatly been influenced by its proximity to Norway, Sweden, and Russia. Lapland is most commonly associated with its reindeer and the Sami people have been herding them for over eight hundred years. They then sell the meat, hides, and carved antlers. In addition to working with reindeer, the Sami people also have a tourist industry which draws many a visitor to Lapland. The Santa Claus Village runs year round and features daily visits from "Santa" himself. Visitors to Lapland can also visit the Salla Reindeer Park to see reindeer and hike along paths in the two-hundred hectare park. Valuable information about reindeer is featured through exhibitions and displays in their main building. The Ranua Wildlife Park features animals that live in the northern climes and arctic regions including polar bears, arctic foxes, lynxes, wild boars, snow geese, fish otters, and lemmings. The wildlife park, like the reindeer park, is open year round. --------------------------- Learn Finnish with FinnishPod101!  Advanced Audio Blog S2 #9 - Top 10 Finnish Musicians: Leningrad Cowboys | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 2:42

Learn Finnish with FinnishPod101! Don't forget to stop by FinnishPod101.com for more great Finnish Language Learning Resources! Vuonna 1994 he esiintyivät jälleen Puna-armeijan kuoron kanssa MTV Music Awards -gaalassa New Yorkin Radio City Music Hallissa. ----Formal English---- Leningrad Cowboys The Finnish band Leningrad Cowboys was conceived in 1986, and it was initially meant to be a play on the fact that the Soviet Union seemed to be losing its power in their part of the world. The first video they made led to the creation of Rocky VI, a short movie. After making several films, the band came into its own, beginning to record music, perform live concerts, and make more videos. The band even went so far as to perform with the full Alexandrov ensemble in 1993 in Helsinki. This was quite the production for a band that started out as a joke conceived by a group of guys drinking in a bar. Again, in 1994, they appeared with a smaller group of members from the Alexandrov ensemble at the MTV Music Awards at New York's Radio City Music Hall. The appearance was viewed by approximately 250 million people around the world. Shortly after this performance, the band, along with the Alexandrov ensemble, were showcased on the Nokia Balalaika Show in Berlin. Presently, Leningrad Cowboys boast two Leningrad Ladies and eleven cowboys in the band. With their Finnish roots, much of their music has a progressive rock feel mixed with polka and with themes that relate to tractors, vodka, rockets and Russian folklore. It is obvious that the band has incorporated some current American influences in their lyrics. Presenting their stories in song with a humorous tone is the basis for much of their claim to fame with their fans. Following in the footsteps of the Beatles, Led Zeppelin and Lynyrd Skynyrd, their music is as diverse as their fan base. --------------------------- Learn Finnish with FinnishPod101!  Advanced Audio Blog S2 #21 - Top 10 Finnish Writers: Elias Lönnrot | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 2:20

Learn Finnish with FinnishPod101! Don't forget to stop by FinnishPod101.com for more great Finnish Language Learning Resources! Tästä huolimatta Kalevala on monien mielestä tärkein suomenkielinen kirjallinen teos. Eepos oli erittäin keskeisessä asemassa Suomen kansallisen identiteetin kehityksessä. ----Formal English---- Elias Lonnrot Elias Lonnrot may be the most important figure in Finnish literary history because he is credited with compiling the Kalevala, a national epic that he drew together from various pieces of Finnish folklore. By trade, Lonnrot was a doctor, although his hobby was philology and collecting poetry from the Finnish oral tradition. Lonnrot was born in the city of Sammatti, and he started studying for his medical degree at the Academy of Turku. However, the same year he began his studies, the university and about half of the town it was in burned down in the Great Fire of Turku. He transferred to the University of Helsinki to finish his medical degree. He became a doctor in Kajaani in the northern part of the country, but there was a great famine going on at the time. The famine was so bad that the previous doctor had resigned. In 1827 his began to collect folk stories, and he began to go on sabbaticals throughout the country to collect even more stories. He also wrote the first important botany book in the Finnish language. Eventually he decided to start weaving these stories together into one cohesive plot, although scholars do not necessarily believe that they originally were supposed to go together. Nonetheless, the Kalevala is considered by many to be the most important literary work in the Finnish language. The epic was especially important when it came to the development of the national identity of Finland. --------------------------- Learn Finnish with FinnishPod101!
