Se on vain 98 kilometrin päässä pääkaupungista, Helsingistä, ja 73 kilometrin päässä Suomen väkirikkaimmasta sisämaakaupungista, Tampereesta. Kaupungissa on Hämeen linna, keskiaikainen harmaakivilinna, jonka ruotsalaiset rakensivat 1200- ja 1300-luvuilla. Linnan ympärille kasvaneesta kylästä tuli kaupunki vuonna 1639 Ruotsin kuninkaan annettua sille kaupungin oikeudet. It is just 98 km from the capital city Helsinki and 73 km from the most populated inland city in Finland, Tampere. It features the Häme Castle, a medieval castle made of gray stone that was built in the thirteenth or fourteenth centuries by the Swedes. The village that grew around the castle became a city in 1639 after the King of Sweden granted it city rights. The castle was converted into a prison from the 1800s until 1953 when it underwent a massive renovation. It reopened as a museum in 1988, and the annual Häme Medieval Fair has been celebrated there each August for the last thirteen years. Places to visit in Hämeenlinna include the Hämeenlinna Theatre, Elektra Electricity Museum, Artillery Museum, and Birth Home of Jean Sibelius. The Culture and Congress Centre Verkatehdas hosts many world-class performances and events and Hämeenlinna is known for its children's art festival, Hippalot. Held each July, Hippalot works on a theme each year, providing innovative and creative activities and performances for children to participate in. Hämeenlinna is twinned with the cities of Uppsala in Sweden, Weimar in Germany, Tver in Russia, Tartu in Estonia, and Hafnarfjörður in Iceland.
