Film ini diangkat dari novel yang laku keras dengan judul yang sama karya Andrea Hirata. Cerita dimulai dengan adegan dramatis. Sebuah sekolah kecil Muhammadiyah berlokasi di desa Gantung, Belitung Timur, Pulau Belitung, terancam dibubarkan karena kekurangan murid. Pada hari pendaftaran hanya 9 orang murid yang datang. Setelah menunggu beberapa waktu dan hendak diputuskan untuk ditutup oleh kepala sekolah, datanglah seorang anak bersama ibunya mendaftarkan diri. Dari sini cerita drama yang menghanyutkan jutaan penonton di Indonesia ini dimulai. Laskar Pelangi, demikian gelar yang diberikan oleh Bu Muslimah ibu guru mereka, menjalani hari-hari menyenangkan, tertawa dan menangis bersama. Kesepuluh anak ini mewakili semua tipe anak khas anak sekolah yang kita sering temui—si jenius, si bodoh si badung, si keras kepala, si tampan, si jago olahraga, si ceria, si pemarah dan si pendiam. Kisah sepuluh kawanan ini berakhir dengan kematian ayah Lintang yang memaksa si jenius cilik putus sekolah. Setelah itu mereka terpencar. Kisah dilanjutkan dengan kejadian 12 tahun kemudian, ketika Ikal sang tokoh utama yang bekerja di luar pulau Belitung kembali ke kampungnya. Film ini menyampaikan pesan sang penulis buku yang juga anggota Laskar Pelangi tentang kenyataan pahit anak-anak sekolah khususnya di daerah terpencil. Lewat buku dan filmnya masyarakat dan pemerintah Indonesia diajak untuk lebih memperdulikan nasib anak-anak di daerah terpencil. Laskar Pelangi juga mengingatkan pentingnya arti pendidikan formal bagi masyarakat miskin di Indonesia. Film ini ditonton oleh lebih dari 4.6 juta penonton. ----Formal English---- The Rainbow Warriors (2008) Laskar Pelangi is a drama about ten elementary school students in one classroom in a remote village. It is adapted from a bestseller novel that goes with the same title written by Andrea Hirata. The story begins with a dramatic scene. A small Muhammadiyah school located in Gantung Village, East Belitung, Belitung Island, is under threat of being dissolved for a lack of students. On its registration day only nine students come. After waiting for a while and finally deciding to be closed by the principal, along comes a boy with his mother to enroll. From this point, the story that drowns millions of Indonesians in tears begins. Laskar Pelangi, a brand conferred to them by Bu Muslimah, their school teacher, enjoy the days laughing and weeping together. The ten students represent all types of pupils we regularly meet—the genius, the slow, the naughty, the stubborn, the handsome, the sporty, the cheerful, the angry, and the silent one. The story of the group ends with the death of Lintang's father that forces him, the genius one, to drop out of school. After that they are all scattered. The story then continues with a scene when Ikal, the main character who works outside Belitung Island, returns home. The movie conveys a message from the writer, who is also a member of Laskar Pelangi, about the sour reality that school age children, especially in remote places, have to face. Through this book and movie Indonesians and government are asked to show their participation.
