Irreligiosophy show

Irreligiosophy

Summary: Irreligiosophy means “the wisdom of irreligion” — it is about questioning dogmas handed down uncritically to us and researching into the history, practice, and theology of various religions. It’s about scrutinizing religious claims with a skeptical eye and placing them in historical perspective. But ultimately, Irreligiosophy 2.0 is really about arming atheists to wage the culture war with arguments and reason. We focus on Christianity because that is the religion that we are most confronted by in our daily lives, but we see all religion and all irrationality as threats to the continued advancement of knowledge, progress, and social justice.

 92: The Inter-Testamental Period | File Type: audio/x-mp3 | Duration: 01:09:27

We finally get to Chuck's research on Judaism, focusing on the inter-Testamental period. We cover the period of Hasmonean independence, Roman presence, life as a client-state of Rome and then as a province under direct rule, the events leading up to and following the destruction of the second Jewish Temple in 70 CE, and finally the disastrous Bar Kochba Rebellion of the 130s.

 91: Hitler, Darwin, and Atheism | File Type: audio/x-mp3 | Duration: 00:59:27

In this episode we discuss the frequently-heard Christian charge that Hitler was an atheist, and if not for Darwin we wouldn't have had Nazism or the Holocaust.

 90: More Than One Lesson | File Type: audio/x-mp3 | Duration: 01:16:28

Tyler of More Than One Lesson comes on the show to discuss what assholes we were to make fun of his podcast last year. We talk about Christian filmmaking, Mormon filmmaking, and come up with a new term for Michael Moore-style documentaries. Also, we reveal the Skunk Dick of the Year for 2009.

 89: Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer | File Type: audio/x-mp3 | Duration: 01:10:43

We discuss the perennial holiday classic about a reindeer born disfigured with a gigantic crimson proboscis, which apparently Leighton has never seen (I honestly don't know how he functions in society). In it, we find a shocking tale of discrimination and prejudice, led by God himself as his alter ego Santa Claus. This episode is not for the faint of heart.

 88: The Nature of Existence | File Type: audio/x-mp3 | Duration: 00:59:13

Roger Nygard joins us in this episode to talk about his newly-released documentary, The Nature of Existence, where he traveled around the world quizzing people of all faiths (or faithlessnesses) about who we are, why we're here, and what to do about it all. We also discuss his previous project, Trekkies. Most importantly, we get to talk about what a huge douchebag Orson Scott Card is.

 87: Evidence 4 Faith Debate | File Type: audio/x-mp3 | Duration: 00:57:12

We enter the lion's den for this podcast, appearing on a live radio broadcast by two evangelical Christians from the East Coast.
