One Hour AT A Time

Summary: Recovery, whether it is from substance abuse or a mental illness, or both requires a treatment plan, which in many cases is as effective as treatments for other chronic illnesses. “One Hour AT A Time” will increase awareness about recovery and decrease the discrimination against individuals in the recovery process. Host Mary Woods, will help people understand the recovery of adults and families living with co-occurring substance use disorders and psychotic and/or affective illness over the course of a lifetime. Helping individuals develop the skills and knowledge they need to take personal responsibility for their health and supporting individuals in their efforts to get on with life beyond illness has been Mary’s mission and she now brings that mission to the airwaves. Broadcasting live on VoiceAmerica Health and Wellness every Monday afternoon at 12 PM Pacific, “One Hour AT A Time” – where recovery begins with education.

Five years after a blossoming career as a commercial deep sea diver in Singapore, Bill MacPhee found himself pacing a psychiatric ward, trapped in a world of illusions, delusions, paranoia and depression.  Addiction, Anger, and the Road to Recovery with Guest Bill Denehy | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 3600

Our guest today, Bill Denehy, joined the New York Mets as a pitcher in 1967. Seemingly “having it all” was sadly still no match for addiction, and a shoulder injury rendered him under the power of drugs to mask his pain. Following his baseball career, jobs he held were punctuated by bouts of anger and substance abuse issues. His personal life suffered; he and his wife eventually divorced and his issues deeply strained his relationship with his daughters. Denehy will share 1) The beginning of his struggles: how rage and addiction issues were intrinsically woven into his life from a young age; 2) His memories of his baseball career cut short by injury; 3) The profound strain his addiction and anger placed on the lives of those most important to him; 4) His road to recovery: what it took to finally ask for help; and 5) The prevalence of over-prescription in baseball and how this led, for him, to the loss of his vision.
