Velanche Presents Urban Landscapes

It's been a long minute since I've managed to get even a mini-mix into the show, what with all of the various technical gotchas happening at the station and the like. Due to that, sometimes I wasn't quite prepared due to something that I've forgotten to take to the station with me. So it's makeup time, and wow the quality uptempo songs keep finding their way to my inbox...and I do mean quality. Familiar labels and producers up against brand new labels and names to share with you. The show is a full-on 2-hour dance mix, recorded last night and listened to over and over by yours truly. The tunes are really fresh, and I hope you'll agree. Whether you move your feet or your head, or even both, I hope you enjoy this Urban Landscapes extra. Time to get back on track. With only a few more shows until the end, it's time to take a closer look at recent albums in my box. Some quality goods are on the radar this week...recent releases, new releases, and forthcoming releases. Different styles that, hopefully, will be good music for your ears. Every year since I've started this show nearly 14 years ago, no year ever goes by without some amazing albums that my ears have graced. Soem of them are groundbreaking, but many are just really good music that stands up to close scrutiny, in my mind. They are the best at culling in the variants of soul and jazz, sometimes electronically, other times organically. You would do well to check out the albums on your own and support these talented artists. You won't find them on American top 40 radio, so don't miss your chance to open your hearts, your minds, your ears and take a dive into greatness. This week's show was a very, very last-minute thing. I was all set to give you a bit of a catchup by way of an all dance set with the music I've been holding onto, and continued to gather, over the last weeks and months. Unfortunately, I got caught off-guard when a vital accessory to the radio station's missing went missing. Just as I was about to abandon the show, the DJ doing the show befor eme reminded me that perhaps it was a good time to go through previous tunes, given that the show is about to end for good. And so here it is, going through plenty of music that I have not listened to in a very long time. I'm sort of surprised just how well music can hold up, and just how good it feels that everything old really can become new again. A pesky dental issue prevented me from giving you a show last week, so I'm back this week to do my best to deliver the new goodness for your very fortunate ears. As the show starts to wind down toward the end of its run, I'll have some cool exclusive guest mixes in the weeks to come. This week isn't an exclusive, but still a good mix. It comes from DJ/producer Jazzy Eyewear, based in Miami and runs the So Sounds Recordings label. Sometimes, getting back into the swing of things takes some getting used to, A little rusty here, a little unpolished there...that sort of thing. Regardless, it's so good to be back on the radio. In case you missed it, I've made a major decision over the summer to end this radio show. It's been a good, long run. But, there are other things in life that I'd like to accomplish. The decision was an easy one for me, though I've had some slight bouts of remorse for a few days. In the end, I know that this is the right decision for me. This, however, won't end my days of sharing music with the world; I have every intention of doing so. I'll let you know as the end is near. July is almost over, which means that the first month of summer has passed by. Still, loads of really fine music has caught my ears, and it's time to share a bit of what's been coming my way in recent weeks. I'd like to touch on two big losses in the music world; one has left a legacy that's been quite influential in the world of soul, the other, despite a tremendous talented presence, was never able to overcome inner demons. Yesterday (It's now Sunday July 24th as I type this), Amy Winehouse was found dead at her home in the UK at the age of 27. To the world of Urban Landscapes, we've gotten a taste of her with "In My House," being remixed by Bugz in the Attic. From there, her musical accomplishments marked a raw talented that eventually captured the attention of the music world. Unfortunately, her career has been eclipsed by her personal troubles, whether it's been her marriage, or her temper, or the drug addiction that she never overcame, her life was a fast one and, unfortunately, a quick one. We will always have her tunes close to us. The week before that, Alphonse "Fonce" Mizell passed away. As one half of the MIzell Brothers, he and Larry were both responsible for productions whose influences are still felt in music today. Works from the likes of Donald Byrd and the Blackbyrds, Bobbi Humphrey, The Jacksons, A Taste of Honey, and even 4Hero, were graced with the Mizell's imprint. Most of the works span throughout the 1970's and into the 1980's. I was also influenced by their sound, having listened, not knowing at the time who they were. Captivating, warm, soulful... Is it June, already?! Hard to believe that 2011 is very much near the midway point. Already, lots of fine music, plenty of good albums, and things will just keep moving forward. This week's broadcast starts with a tribute to Gil Scott-Heron, who passed away very recently. Most of us, including yours truly, know him as the voice behind the landmark song, "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised,' while others might have been introduced to him via his critically-acclaimed album that was released last year. Unfortunately, I haven't had the pleasure of listening to the album, nor do I pretend to know much of his work. There has been spots of music here and there that I've heard, most notably "B-Movie" in the 1980's. If you've never heard much of his music, I think you're going to be blown away by just how powerful, and how so very relevant, his words have been, and still are, whether he's signing or speaking with his intense voice. If you have been fortunate to have known him well musically, then I hope that this tribute does him justice...there's just so much body of work he's amassed, it'll take more than an hour to wade through the tunes. Before I leave you, I just want to let you know that I'm going to make a bit of a switch from this month through late September. I'm going to fall back to a bi-weekly schedule, so the show will still go on, and you'll get some fresh sounds. There's a good chance that some exclusive mixes will be part of the package...mixes that will not be part of the show. We're a month into spring here in the states, but the weather is still a bit on the mixed side on the Central Coast of the state.
