This week has been a hard one for America; cops shooting blacks, cops being shot at…been a bit grueling, to say the least. At the end of this week’s show, I hope that Stevie Wonder can help me put thoughts and words in ways that I cannot. Also on the show is a musical tribute to Bernie Worrell, an extremely talented music with mad keyboard skills, cultivated over a lifetime. Most may not know him by name, but anyone who’s listened to some of the bad ass synths on the music of Parliament-Funkadelic are sure to have heard of it, as he was a founding member of legendary funk outfit Parliament. If you listen to some of those space-age bass wobbles and grooves, chances are good that they came from his hands. He was one of the first artists embracing the seminal Moog synthesizer, bringing new life to what R&B and funk brought to music. Not only will there be music of Parliament and Funkadelic, but also some of his many collaborations as a studio musician over the years, and also some of his solo work too. Welcome to July 2016. Here on the Central Coast of California, the weather hasn’t been terribly hot, except for the folks who are inland. But other than that, the weather has been fantastic, and it’s a nice way to start off the second half of 2016. Some housekeeping notes for the show that you should be aware of… First, the Bernie Worrell tribute for the show will be pushed back; it will either be the next coming show or the one after that, because… Second, the show will extend to three hours for one week only, which will be next week for sure. Fair warning…there is no Show 16.11. Okay, that’s not exactly true, but there were some technical snafus that caused me to take some drastic measures halfway into the show, and in the end I had to call it a loss. Greetings from beautiful San Luis Obispo, California, where it’s slightly chilly with the wind, but otherwise very beautiful. I’m very refreshed after lots of sleeping yesterday afternoon into evening after an incredibly busy week, including three DJ gigs, which is the most I’ve done in a week at a time when I’ve been doing a few a year. There is some amazing gigs happening in our little town with some really passionate DJs who are out to make their own special imprint, going above and beyond, and going beyond expectations of the masses, to share their love of quality music with people. When done on their terms, it’s very gratifying. I got to do that three times this week, and always grateful for the opportunity, without having to compromise. At a time when DJ legends are under attack from management in some club quarters, it’s always good when the enlightened allow for branching out of ideas of time and space, to let good music be, to let good DJs create unforgettable experiences that are unexpected. So this show! If you’ve been following me, you may know that I’ve been at this great station about 12 miles from San Luis Obispo, 97.3 The Rock, located in Estero Bay, practically Morro Bay really. The station was in the midst of its annual fundraising drive when I arrived, and I’m happy that it’s able to meet and exceed its fundraising goal. It was cutting it close, because there have been other low power FM stations that have shuttered around the country, because they couldn’t meet their operating costs. This station consists of all volunteers, and without reaching its goal it wouldn’t have been possible for the station to continue. So to see the troops…that is, the community, rally in force, is very gratifying. It shows that people care about having the best live DJs around. Believe me, these are very passionate and dedicated on-air personalities who love the shows they do, and it’s great that all of us will have another year of programming to share. I’m honored to be among them. The show was recorded a few days after the fundraising drive has closed in spectacular fashion, with a concert and silent auction that was standing room only and pushed over the fundraising goal nicely. This is the first show at the station where I did a full-on club mix, from beginning to end. It’s been quite awhile, and it felt great to deliver the very cool new tunes that have been filling up my box. Have a listen, and please enjoy the music. On the morning of Thursday April 21, the news was out that artist Prince was found dead in his Paisley Park recording studios. As of now, the cause of his death is under investigation. There have been so many Prince tributes left and right, and I was fortunate to have taken part in a couple of local Prince tributes, except to say that his music can truly bring generations of folks on the floor, and touch them in profound ways, and has. His talent is vast, his personality independent, and his legend firmly planted. You’ll hear his music, as well as some of those he’s produced. A few days later, soul and jazz singer Billy Paul followed Prince, passing away at age 80 at his home in New Jersey. He will always be known by the masses for that one song that he’ll be forever known for, which is, of course, “Me & Mrs. Jones,” but he has put out some great musical input over the years, some ending up being too political for radio stations to touch. While he’s never been able to replicate the song’s success, he’s endured through decades of performances and recordings. On my second go-around broadcasting on the live radio since starting in mid-April, a couple of shakeups happened in the music world. First, the venerable musical creative Prince passed away at the young age of 57. Then a few days later, Billy Paul, best known for the seminal soul ballad “Me & Mrs. Jones,” also passed away, he at age 80. I’ve dropped a tune or two from each, and will have a more full-on tribute on the next show. For this edition, it’s the first Urban Landscapes Guestmix in years, and I’m pleased to have Glyn Bush do the honors. He’s done a mix for my show before, and have shared various releases over the years, and now he’s back with his project The Dandelion Set, and its new album, “A Thousand Strands: 1975-2015,” on the UK label Buried Treasure. Glyn has put together a pretty fresh mix, apparently too fresh for venerable mix show “Solid Steel” to air. Well there’s no sense in keeping a good mix tucked away, so you can have a listen on this show.
