It's International Day for Biological Diversity | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:01:52

Hosts Stuart and William, mark International Day for Biological Diversity in this bonus episode of The People's Countryside Environmental Debate Podcast. As the global community is called to re-examine our relationship to the natural world, one thing is certain: despite all our technological advances, we are completely dependent on healthy and vibrant ecosystems for our water, food, medicines, clothes, fuel, shelter and energy, just to name a few. The theme in 2022 is “Building a shared future for all life”. Fitting within the context of the ongoing United Nations Decade on Restoration, which highlights that biodiversity is the answer to several sustainable development challenges, the slogan conveys the message that, biodiversity is the foundation upon which we can build back better.  Protesting Against Royalty | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:18:31

Stuart and William once again record in Stuart's back garden, hence the background sounds, with Stuart in your left ear, and William in your right ear, placing you, the listener, at the heart of the conversation. In this episode they conversate, explore, and delve into the question below, which was sent in by our listener Todd in Oxford, England. “Recently, when members of the UK royal family visited some Caribbean islands, they were met with protests about the former slave trade and colonial impacts during history, and today. These protests clearly got Prince William thinking, as he said when he became king, he wouldn’t rule the Commonwealth if the people of those countries weren’t in favour of that. Isn’t it a bit odd how a country like Jamaica can be independent, and still have a UK royal as head of state? Isn’t it a bit odd the monarch is still head of state in the UK too? Is Prince William's reaction to the protests a genuine attempt at changing things, and moving things, and the conversation on, and dealing with the modern day impacts of the former slave trade? Or is it a cynical attempt at convincing people the royal family are listening, and just trying to save their own status?"  Property Ownership Obsession | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:18:33

”In the UK, we’re totally obsessed with home and property ownership, we’ll, that's my personal perspective. If someone buys a house next to a river, or on the coast, and experiences increasing levels of floods or erosion of that coast, devaluing or even threatening the existence of their property.  Is it ever fair to blame others for their situation, or even expect the system to support them, by implementing flood and erosion mitigation measures, or even support them financially, so their investment value is sustained? Is this really a reflection though that many of the systems of the ‘civilized’ world are unsustainable, and an example of how the nomadic cultures are more adaptable to the ever changing natural world? It feels like the civilized world is literally behaving like King Canute, trying to hold back the tide, but I realise the nomadic cultures have their own issues too." Stuart and William delve into, investigate, explore and conversate around this question above, which was sent in by listener Ivan in Grindleford, Derbyshire, England. During this episode a stand-up routine by the comedian Bill Bailey is mentioned, here's a link to that piece: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ECvwnV62pdc Get email notifications about future releases: http://bit.ly/34oQXkm Do you have a question you'd like Stuart and William to examine, mull over, explore, discuss, delve into or debate?  Giving Back Artefacts | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:13:05

“Is it reasonable for museums to hold items and collections from around the world when they were potentially obtained in dubious ways? Should they be given back to the cultures who already had them, or are they better used as educational opportunities for the museum visitors?” Stuart 'the rebel rouser' who is NOT the podcast, and William 'the waffler' embark on a rambling, and entertaining exchange, which was sparked by another question from listener Todd in Oxford, England. During this episode, William mentioned a stand up routine by the comedian James Acaster, here's a link to that video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x73PkUvArJY.
