UPSET: Smith demolishes Fonfara in one (PBC ON NBC CBS Fox…who Knows anymore!!) By Craig Wick and Jesse Wright at ringside Photos: Leonard Wilson Jr. & Nabeel Ahmad/Premier Boxing Champions In a Windy City shocker, little-known light heavyweight Joe Smith Jr. came into the lion's den and flattened WBC #2, WBA #3, WBO #4 rated Andrzej "The Polish Prince" Fonfara at 2:32 of the first round on Saturday night at the UIC Pavilion in Chicago. Fonfara, who drops to 28-4, 16 KOs, just landed his best combination of the fight when "The Irish Bomber" suddenly dropped him hard in ring center courtesy of a monstrous overhand right. Fonfara gamely rose, but crashed into the ropes on unsteady legs. The fight was allowed to continue, but several pinpoint combinations to the head left Fonfara in a heap in his respective corner, unable to rise. With the spectacular win, Smith Jr., out of Brookhaven, NY, improves to 22-1, 17 KOs. Joe Smith Jr: "There's no feeling like this. I'm happy to take this victory back home to New York to all my fans. I'll talk to my promoter but I'm hoping for another big fight to get myself to a world title. Now everybody knows who I am. This is the best thing that could have happened. Once I started hitting him and pushing him back he fell away and left himself open for the right hand. I thought this would be more of a fight, but I took him out early and it feels great. He was punching and I knew he leaves himself open. I was just looking for the punch and it landed." Andrzej Fonfara: "He is a heavy puncher. He hit me with a great punch. It happens. I threw some good punches, but I got too comfortable. I didn't see the punch coming. That made it a great punch. I'm disappointed because I thought I would win the fight but it is boxing. I will rest and get back in the ring. I'll get back to work." News Of The Week Cuellar vs. Mares cancelled DiBella Entertainment Statement: Regrettably, due to a medical issue that renders former three-division world champion Abner Mares presently unable to fight in New York State, the Cuellar vs. Mares fight has been cancelled and will be replaced on the Showtime Championship Boxing on CBS telecast next Saturday, June 25. Abner's condition is in no way life-threatening, nor was it revealed in a blood or urine test; there was no use of any drugs, including PEDs or other banned substances. In honoring Abner's right to medical confidentiality, no further information will be released on this situation unless he chooses. An announcement will be forthcoming with respect to the replacement bout that will open the broadcast. Spence to return August 21, opponent TBA Unbeaten welterweight Errol Spence Jr. (20-0, 17 KOs) announced on Saturday night's ‎NBC boxing broadcast that he'll be back in the ring in prime time on NBC on Sunday, August 21. No opponent was named for the IBF #2, WBO #3, WBC #5 and WBA #5 147-pound contender, but on June 8 we reported that Spence and IBF #7 Leonard Bundu(33-1-2, 12 KOs) have agreed to fight in an eliminator bout to become the new IBF mandatory welterweight challenger. Wilder a 37:1 favorite over Arreola Undefeated heavyweight world champion Deontay "The Bronze Bomber" Wilder (36-0, 35 KOs) is a massive early wagering favorite to defeat Chris "The Nightmare" Arreola (36-4-1, 31 KOs) on July 16 in Birmingham, Alabama. 5dimes currently lists Wilder at -3750 to retain his belt. Bettors who peg Arreola for the upset can get +1500. The fight was made official earlier this week. Promoters request November 19 for Kovalev-Ward, September 17 for Canelo return The next meeting of the Nevada State Athletic Commission will be held on Tuesday. The business at hand includes requests from promoters for fight dates. Main Events and Roc Nation have requested the date of November 19 to promote a boxing event to be held at the T‐Mobile Arena to be televised on pay‐per‐view. That bout is expected to be Sergey Kovalev vs. Andre Ward. Go(continued)

News ALI Cutman Joe Chavez and Trainer Jose Morales also passed away since Ali Stevenson to defend against Williams on July 29 WBC light heavyweight champion Adonis "Superman" Stevenson (27-1, 22 KOs) will defend his title for the seventh time against WBC #9 rated Thomas "Top Dog" Williams (20-1, 14 KOs) on July 29 at Centre Videotron in Quebec City. "I am very happy to get back in the ring for my next fight, which will be held July 29 in the superb Centre Videotron of Quebec, against Thomas Williams Jr.," Stevenson said. "I will demonstrate that, like fine wine, I am even better with age. Even though I haven't boxed for 10 months, I've never left the gym and I'm willing to defend my crown." Wilder-Arreola coming together for July 16 An announcement is expected shortly that will make it official that WBC heavyweight champion Deontay "The Bronze Bomber" Wilder (36-0, 35 KOs) will defend his world title against Chris "The Nightmare" Arreola (36-4-1, 31 KOs) on July 16 at Legacy Arena in Birmingham, Alabama. Wilder was permitted another voluntary defense by the WBC after longtime mandatory challenger Alexander Povetkin tested positive for trace amounts of a banned substance. Arreola is coming off a split decision over Travis Kauffman last December, which was later changed to a no-decision after Arreola tested positive for marijuana. He received a 90-day suspension and was removed from the WBC ratings, but the suspension has expired so he will likely reappear in the next WBC ratings. FOX TV is expected to televise. 1. Lonnie Ali Muhammad Ali's widow spoke eloquently of her husband's strength of character and the inspiration his life might be to others. "Muhammad may have challenged his government, but he never ran from it, or from America. He loved this country and he understood the hard choices that are borne of freedom. I think he saw a nation's soul measured by the soul of its people." 2. Rasheda Ali-Walsh Ali-Walsh smiled, and made her family smile, with an endearing tribute to her father. Just as he shook up the world in life, she said, he's still shaking it up in death. "Daddy's looking at us now, right? And saying, 'I told you I was the greatest!' No one compares to you, Daddy." 3. Billy Crystal Comedian and longtime friend Billy Crystal said the first time he met the Champ was in 1974, when he was just getting started as a stand-up comedian and was asked to perform at an event honoring Ali. After finishing his routine, Ali gave him a nickname he'd keep for the rest of his life: "Little brother." 4. President Bill Clinton The final speaker at the memorial service, Clinton remembered Ali's humor, intelligence, natural gifts and determination "to write his own life story." He also drew big applause recalling Ali's lighting of the Olympic torch in Atlanta in 1996, "seeing his hands shake and his legs shake and knowing, by God, he was going to make those last few steps, no matter what it took -- the flame would be lit, the fight would be won, his spirit would be affirmed." 5. Rabbi Michael Lerner Among the religious leaders who spoke was Lerner, a political activist and editor of a progressive Jewish magazine. His remarks were the most political of the afternoon. "The way to honor Muhammad Ali is to be Muhammad Ali today. That means us, everyone here and everyone listening. It's up to us to continue that ability to speak truth to power. We must speak out, refuse to follow the path of conformity to the rules of the game in life." 6. Attallah Shabazz The eldest daughter of Malcolm X, Attallah Shabazz came close to tears recalling the man who was the last close connection she had to her father. The two men were trusted friends, she said. And though Malcolm X was 16 years older, he still called Ali his "little brother." 7. Rev. Kevin Cosby The Rev. Kevin Cosby, pastor at St. Stephen Church in Louisville and president of Simmons College of Kentucky, spoke about Ali's importance in the growth of black pride in the years after Jackie Robinson, Joe Louis, Jesse Lewis and Rosa Parks. Ali took the idea of "somebody-ness to unheard-of heights," he said. "Before James Brown said, 'I'm black and I'm proud,' Muhammad Ali said, 'I'm black and I'm pretty.'"

THE LOUISVILLE LIP Cassius Clay Sr. gifted his son a new red-and-white Schwinn in 1954, which was promptly stolen. The 12-year-old, 89-pound Cassius Clay vowed "I'm gonna whup whoever stole my bike!" A policeman, Joe Martin, told young Cassius Clay that he better learn how to fight before he challenged anyone. After 6 months of training with Joe Martin, Cassius won his debut match in a three-round decision. Young Cassius Clay dedicated himself to boxing and training with an unmatched fervor. According to Joe Martin, Clay set himself apart by two things: He was "sassy," and he outworked all the other boys.

"After much consideration, today, I instructed my team at Golden Boy Promotions to continue negotiating a fight with Gennady 'GGG' Golovkin and to finalize a deal as quickly as possible. I also informed the WBC that I will vacate its title. For the entirety of my career, I have taken the fights that no one wanted because I fear no man. Never has that been more true than today. I will fight 'GGG,' and I will beat 'GGG' but I will not be forced into the ring by artificial deadlines. I am hopeful that by putting aside this ticking clock, the two teams can now negotiate this fight, and 'GGG' and I can get in the ring as soon as possible and give the fans the fight they want to see." Oscar De La Hoya, the chairman and CEO of Golden Boy Promotions, also released a statement in which he echoed Alvarez's enthusiasm for getting a deal done with Golovkin. "There is no denying that Canelo is the biggest star in the sport of boxing. He is eager to get in the ring with 'GGG' to show the world that he is also the best pound for pound fighter in the sport, but we won't negotiate under a forced deadline. Now that the WBC title is off the table, I am hopeful that 'GGG' and his promoter K2 Promotions will come to the table in good faith and get this deal done."

 BLAH! #CaneloKahn | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1561

Mike Tyson said it best: "Everybody's got plans. Until they get hit." Amir Khan was almost alone in his belief he could jump two weight divisions and beat one of the most fearsome fighters on the planet in Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez. Even his trainer didn't sound convinced. Most people thought it would play out like it did: Khan would frustrate Alvarez for a few rounds before walking onto a big one. Virgil Hunter, the man charged with hatching a plan to keep Alvarez at bay for 12 rounds, was distancing himself from the fight the moment it was announced. What madness is this? If you really must. It was your idea, in case anyone asks… Hunter knew what most people knew, namely that Khan would be able to run but he wouldn't be able to hide. Alvarez's promoter, Oscar de la Hoya, crudely characterised the fight as "speed versus power". But Alvarez is a little bit more than a club-wielding caveman. The Mexican made adjustments, cut down the ring, found his range, executed his feints and eventually went KABOOM!

This fight will be for Canelo's middleweight title, but will be contested at a catchweight of 155 lbs. The reason most boxing fans already wrote Khan off is that his chin has proven to be vulnerable at 147 lbs, and now he will be stepping up in weight to fight Canelo, who undoubtedly hits harder than any of Khan's previous opponents. Canelo and GGG were expected to face each other late in 2016 with each fighter taking a tuneup to build the hype. There were rumors that Golovkin would face Dominic Wade (where he would be a huge favorite) while Golden Boy are taking a little more risk with Canelo in order to have a PPV worthy fight. He ruled out a showdown with GGG and didn't seem interested in facing the Thurman-Porter winner. Frampton-Santa Cruz clash July 30 in Brooklyn Undefeated world champion Carl "The Jackal" Frampton has relinquished his IBF World super bantamweight belt ahead of his WBA super world featherweight title challenge against fellow undefeated champion Leo Santa Cruz on July 30 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. In order for Frampton to pursue two-weight world title glory against Santa Cruz this summer, the Northern Irishman vacated his coveted IBF super bantamweight crown due to mandatory obligations. He previously vacated the WBA version of the belt for the same reason. According to Team Frampton, the Santa Cruz fight at featherweight made the most financial sense. The IBF's 122lb mandatory challenger is Shingo Wake. The WBA had mandated a fight between Frampton and Guillermo Rigondeaux. WBC champ Francisco Vargas fails drug test Golden Boy Promotions has issued the following statement with regard to WBC super featherweight world champion Francisco "El Bandido" Vargas: "As part of a voluntary testing program that Francisco Vargas requested ahead of his June 4 fight, he tested positive for clenbuterol. Francisco believes he tested positive due to ingesting contaminated meat in Mexico where clenbuterol is commonly used by ranchers in livestock feed. The Associated Press reported this week that this practice may impact athletes throughout the country ahead of the 2016 Olympics. "Francisco has, is and will always be a clean fighter. That is why he insisted on this voluntary testing program ahead of the first defense of his WBC championship. He previously tested clean as part of this same voluntary testing regiment and in all of his previous fights. He will immediately leave Mexico to finish his training camp in the US in order to avoid any possible repeat of this situation and is fully cooperating with the California State Athletic Commission to submit to all required testing ahead of his June 4 title defense." Joshua-Breazeale sells out in 30 minutes The first defense of IBF heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua against Dominic "Trouble" Breazeale at The O2 in London on June 25 sold out in 30 minutes today. Joshua (16-0, 16 KOs) landed the crown at the same arena earlier in April with a second round KO of Charles Martin and is looking to take another unbeaten record from another unbeaten American foe when Breazeale crosses the pond boasting a 17-0 record with 15 KO wins. Tickets went on general sale at 10am today and went inside half an hour – yet another rapid sell-out fight for the Olympic hero.
