Linda Naomi Katz was raised as a modern orthodox Jew, where mental illness became a factor throughout her life. It had started with her mother when she was in the fifth grade. Her mother had suffered a nervous breakdown and was diagnosed with acute depression. This gave Linda and her family a huge amount of stress. As she was growing up into adulthood, her mother's illness affected her in ways that she too would become a depressed person. Linda had difficulties making friends, developing positive relationships, and maintaining employment. After she graduated college, she also suffered from a mental illness and was diagnosed with bipolar disorder.   Through the years she was faced with challenges that were difficult to overcome, but worked hard to achieve recovery. As part of her recovery from mental illness, she became active and volunteered for a variety of mental health organizations. Linda became a member of NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness or formerly called National Alliance for the Mentally Ill) and published articles about her life in New York City Voices, a newspaper for people with mental illness to share their personal recovery stories. Both of these agencies helped fight against stigma and other issues pertaining to mental illness. Soon after, Linda found employment working for agencies that help others with mental illness reach their goals and dreams. Today, Linda is happily married, an author who has published a book titled Surviving Mental Illness, My Story which won a Silver Medal Award by Readers Favorite for best non-fiction/autobiography and came in First Place and won the Life Journeys Award for best memoir/biography from Readers Views.  Health Collectors Dr. James and Semaj Brown stops by Good Deeds w/ Dr. Renee Sun | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:38:00

Dr. James and Semaj Brown stops by Good Deeds w/ Dr. Renee Sunday. Never in her wildest dreams, did Semaj Brown, co-founder of the Planted Kingdom Project ever imagine transforming herself into vegetable characters and bringing them into life. Nor did her husband, Dr. James Brown, a family physician, ever think that he would be her front man, warming up audiences with his humor, telling his story of how his wife saved him from his daily fast food diet, and ultimately saved his life. What did he do next? He proposed, they married, and the two have gone on to make history, transforming lives in their Flint, Michigan community. Semaj Brown created vegetarian meals that are savory and satisfying, that would prove to help the couple lose weight. "Adopting a new healthy lifestyle of eating plant based foods, and exercise, was key to our losing a combined 200 pounds," says Semaj. After losing 75 pounds, Dr. Brown decided to motivate his patients and others in the community with his "Pounds Down Challenge", where the individual who loses the most weight wins $1,000.00. "Money is a motivating factor, for sure. January 25th, we will present our third "Pounds Down Challenge" winner, which is sponsored by my practice." The Browns took to the airwaves hosting radio talk show programs, where Dr. Brown would answer health related questions, and the couple created the segment: "What's for Dinner Mrs. Brown?" Semaj, an accomplished poet, began to creatively give a voice to the vegetables that were the "stars" of her recipes.

Author/ Entrepreneur /Leader Joyce Reed stops by Good Deeds w/ Dr. Renee Sunday | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:34:00

Good Deeds presents Author, entrepreneur and Leader Joyce Reed- REAL TALK ABOUT ALL FORMS VIOLENCE! In the early 80's a young girl was born into a family that left her heartless, helpless and emotionless allowing her to always fin for herself; alone and barely loved. She grew up and experienced so many things that eventually allowed her to learn, forgive, forget and grow. Sharing my story to touch hearts of others that can relate to struggle, life's disappointments, abuse, deaths, and or betrayal; and come out with a positive attitude. Using the words I recorded in journals and notebooks I kept as a young girl, I now bare my soul within these pages by sharing my truth. I share my personal struggles with the world to help others and give them the support and love I never felt as a young girl. I don’t want anyone to ever feel, what I felt growing up, but in my years of healing I realize that I am certainly not the only one. It was a lot of hurt and pain but there are ways to get through it, to do more than just survive. Reclaim your worth, your dignity, your SELF.  He will see you through it, and He will put people in your path that will help along the way. I am sharing my story with you, so others, who have judged me without knowing the silent pain that I carried, will finally understand. “Never judge a book by its cover, first open it and read it.” So as the Bible says, I am making it plain, and writing it on tablets--making my life that open book; a book that includes a vision of hope, faith and victory that many desire, but few have claimed.  At the end of my story, you will have cried, laughed, had chills or even gotten upset, feel hurt or feel loved. But at the very end of it all I want you to take my words, then write your own story, or rewrite your story with a new path of healing, love, and faith.
