Today on Felony Friday we welcome Beth Curtis on the show. Beth is the founder of Life for Pot. Life for Pot is an organization that spotlights offenders who have received life sentences without Parole for marijuana offenses. Beth started the organization after her younger brother, John Knock, was found guilty of three conspiracy charges and given a sentence of two life terms, for a first time non-violent marijuana offense. John's experience in the criminal justice system motivated Beth to start this organization, which shares his story and shines a lot on the many individuals who are serving life sentences for marijuana.  Felony Friday 069 - Officer Dominick Izzo Exposes Police Corruption & Speaks Against Drug War | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:43:00

Today on Felony Friday host John Odermatt is joined by Officer Dominick Izzo. Officer Izzo is a 16 year veteran police officer. You've probably seen his videos that he often shoots in his car, pop up in your Facebook feed. During his time as a police officer Officer Izzo received numerous honors and awards while serving in his community and he says on his website that it's his goal to bridge the gap between the police and the public through education, empowerment and respect. In 2015 he started publishing videos where he began to expose police corruption. Officer Izzo spoke against the War on Drugs and revealed shady dealings behind the scenes in the Round Lake Police Department where he was employed. He vocally opposed a system that he believed was using officers to punish the very people they were hired to serve. Late last year, Officer Izzo called for his Police Chief's resignation. Ultimately, this resulted in Dominick Izzo being terminated from his position at the Round Lake Police Department. During the interview Officer Izzo shares what led him to pursuing a career in law enforcement. Izzo discussed the events that led him to speak out against corruption in his department. Finally, Dominick explains the point system his Police Chief used to manipulate the police officers in his department to pursue charges for victimless crimes and other petty revenue generating offenses. On today's show host John Odermatt is joined by Nazgol Ghandnoosh from the The Sentencing Project. Nazgol studied Economics at the University of Pennsylvania, before moving to Los Angeles for graduate school. She received a Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of California, Los Angeles. Nazgol has worked as a researcher for the consulting firm Monitor Group and at Columbia University’s National Center for Children in Poverty. In Los Angeles, she contributed to “Ban the Box” reform efforts to enhance employment prospects for people with criminal records and worked on campaigns to restore voting rights to people with felony convictions. Currently, Nazgol is a Research Analyst at The Sentencing Project, which is a nonprofit organization engaged in research and advocacy for criminal justice reform. She's on the show today to discuss her report titled: Delaying a Second Chance: The Declining Prospects for Parole on Life Sentences. On today's episode of Felony Friday Malik King joins host John Odermatt. Malik is the Prison Outreach Coordinator for the Can-Do Foundation. On Episode 65 of this show we spoke to the founder of the Can-Do Foundation, Amy Povah. Malik is a Prisoner Activist and advocate who opposes mandatory minimums, cruel and unusual punishment and torture, including solitary confinement or draconian sentences that do not fit the crime. Malik's incredibly dedicated to maintaining his communication with prisoners. He has a full-time job and all of his prison outreach is volunteer work. After working a full day, he routinely stays up until 6 AM writing emails and messages to inmates, before he finally retires to grab a few hours of sleep before work. There aren't too many people who could make it a week on Malik's schedule and he's been doing it for years! During the show Malik shares the events that led him to become passionate about prison outreach and how he became famous in prisons across the nation for his inspirational poetry. Malik and John discuss former Felony Friday guest Israel Torres and what is was like for Malik to see Israel be granted clemency by President Obama. Malik also relays some sad stories about inmates who, for unknown reasons, were not granted clemency by Obama. On today's episode the great Harvey Silverglate joins Felony Friday host John Odermatt to discuss his bombshell book, Three Felonies A Day: How the Feds Target the Innocent. Harvey is a graduate of Harvard Law School and he's been an advocate for civil liberties for more than fifty years. He's an attorney, writer, and non-profit activist. Silverglate is still practicing law, currently with the Boston firm Zalkind Duncan & Bernstein. He specializes in criminal defense, civil liberties, and academic freedom and student rights cases. In addition to his legal work, Silverglate has a very successful writing career as newspaper columnist and book author. He is also a co-founder of the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education. FIRE is a non-profit 501(c)(3) foundation dedicated to preserving and enlarging academic freedom, due process, and freedom of speech on college campuses across the US.
