The latest data collected by NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft during its historic close flyby of the Pluto system in July 2015 -- provides the most detailed investigation yet of the role a subsurface liquid water ocean is likely to have played in the evolution of key features on the dwarf planet such as the vast, low-lying plain known as Sputnik Planitia. *World’s most advanced weather satellite launched The world’s most advanced weather satellite has been launched from the Cape Canaveral Air Force Base in Florida aboard an Atlas V rocket. NASA’s new fifth generation Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite GOES-R will provide atmospheric and surface measurements of the Earth’s Western Hemisphere for weather forecasting, severe storm tracking, space weather monitoring and meteorological research. *Galileo launches into space aboard Ariane An Ariane 5 rocket has blasted into orbit from the European Space Agency’s Kourou space port in French Guiana carrying four Galileo navigation satellites. The flight was the first time ESA had used the Ariane 5 for Galileo missions. All previous 14 Galileo launches were carried out aboard Russian Soyuz–Fregat rockets which can only carry two Galileo satellites at a time. During their 30 day stay in orbit the crew conducted a range of experiments testing equipment needed for China’s planned new space station – the first core module of which is slated for launch in 2018. *Atlas V being reconfigured for Starliner missions The United Launch Alliance have reconfigured their Atlas V 421 launch vehicle to handle Boeing’s CST-100 Starliner capsule which will transport crew to the International Space Station. New supercomputer modelling has pinned down the likely mass of the AXION particle – if it exists -- finding it’s within the same range as the hypothetical cold dark matter particle. *New experimental X-ray pulsar navigation satellite launched China has carried out the second launch of its Long March 11 rocket taking a new experimental X-ray pulsar navigation satellite into orbit. The spacecraft is part of a ten year program to test a new autonomous deep space navigation system using millisecond X-ray pulses from 26 nearby neutron stars to create a navigation database to help determine a spacecraft’s position. *China launches a secretive new Earth observation satellite Meanwhile, China has also launched a Long March 2D rocket carrying what they claim is the first of a new constellation of weather satellites. The new findings indicate our nearest stellar neighbour other than the Sun undergoes similar magnetic cycles to the Sun which however are far more dramatic. *New Horizons completes its epic data transfer from last year’s close encounter with Pluto NASA’s New Horizons mission has reached a major milestone with the last bits of science data from the July 2015 Pluto flyby finally transmitted to Earth. The valuable information had been stored on the spacecraft’s digital recorders since last year’s historic close encounter – mission managers being forced to drip feed the data back to Earth because of the huge distances involved. *New Pluto revelations continue to surprize scientists Meanwhile, data from earlier New Horizons Pluto downloads are continuing to provide surprising discoveries. Following the recent revelation that Pluto contains a large subsurface liquid water ocean -- and earlier discoveries of cryogenic ice volcanos and blue Plutonian skies -- scientists have now confirmed the dwarf planet has some of the brightest spots in the solar system reflecting an amazing 100 percent of the light they receive. *Very close asteroid flyby Astronomers have just witnessed a really close encounter with an asteroid which zoomed past the Earth between about 75 thousand and 96 thousand kilometres above the ground. The 22 metre wide space rock rocketed past the planet at over 21 kilometres per second just hours after first being spotted by the Mt. Lemmon Sky Survey in Arizona. *SpaceX hopes to be back before the end of the year SpaceX says it hopes to be back in the air before the end of the year. There’s growing evidence that China is getting ready to fly its new Long March 5 heavy lift rocket for the first time. The new heavyweight launcher is capable of lifting over 25 tonnes into low Earth orbit -- that’s more than the European Space Agency’s Ariane 5 ECA and roughly as much as the United Launch Alliance’s Delta IV heavy. The findings raise fresh concerns about future long term human exploration of the lunar surface. *Dramatic seasonal changes seen on Titan As Titan approaches its northern summer solstice, NASA's Cassini spacecraft has revealed dramatic seasonal changes in the atmospheric temperature and composition of Saturn's largest moon. The new observations show a polar reversal in Titan's atmosphere since Cassini arrived at Saturn in 2004. The 577 kilogram spacecraft lost contact with ESA mission control in Darmstadt Germany during its six minute journey to the surface of the red planet. *Juno spacecraft suddenly enters emergency safe mode NASA’s Juno spacecraft which is exploring Jupiter suddenly entered safe mode on Tuesday. Early indications are a software performance monitor induced a reboot of the spacecraft’s on board computer. The operation prevented the probe’s science instruments from working during the Jovian flyby. *More evidence for a ninth planet on the edge of our solar system The yet to be discovered Planet Nine -- which may lurk beyond Neptune on the dark outer rim of our solar system – could explain the mysterious six degree difference between the Sun’s equator and the ecliptic or average orbital plane of the planets. The new findings provide astronomers with their first compelling evidence to explain the unusual wobble of the planets with respect to the Sun’s equator. *Expedition 49 Launch to the International Space Station A Russian Soyuz rocket has successfully launched into space from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in the central Asian republic of Kazakhstan carrying three new expedition 49 crew members to the International Space Station. It will be a busy time for the new crew with more than 250 experiments scheduled -- covering biology, Earth sciences, human research, physical sciences and technology development. The findings are based a new study of data from the Earth orbiting Hubble Space Telescope and other ground and space based observatories. *How Pluto paints its largest moon red Pluto’s binary partner and largest moon Charon owes its unusual reddish polar colouring to methane gas escaping Pluto’s atmosphere and becoming trapped by Charon’s gravity -- eventually freezing on to its cold, icy surface. Once installed on the SKA the complete system will process raw observations of distant stars and galaxies and turn them into data that can be analysed by astronomers around the world. *China launches two taikonauts on a month long space mission China has successfully launched two taikonauts on a month long mission into orbit. The Shenzhou 11 spacecraft blasted off from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Centre in the Gobi Desert to rendezvous and dock with the Tiangong 2 orbiting laboratory launched last month. The distant frozen world was originally detected in 2014 and has now been confirmed by the International Astronomical Union. *Strange double peanut shaped galaxies discovered Astronomers have discovered weird structures shaped like double peanuts in two nearby galaxies. The discovery reported in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society are thought to provide new clues about the history of these galaxies. *Schiaparelli prepares to land on Mars In less than a week from now the European Space Agency’s ExoMars entry, descent and landing module Schiaparelli will touch down on the frozen arid surface of the red planet. The findings reported in the journal Planetary and Space Science are based on tiny mineral samples of debris from the Tunguska impact zone that are absolutely characteristic of a meteorite. *Giant cannonballs seen shooting from star Astronomers have detected mysterious superhot balls of plasma -- each almost the size of Earth -- being ejected near a dying star. The plasma blobs are moving through space at some 770 thousand kilometres an hour -- so quickly they could fly from the Earth to the Moon in just half an hour. *Australian NBN satellite launched Sky Muster 2 the second of two new NBN telecommunications satellites has been successfully launched into orbit aboard an Ariane 5 ECA heavy lift rocket. Arianespace mission number VA231 blasted off into late afternoon skies from launch complex ELA-3 at the European Space Agency’s Kourou space port in French Guiana. *New Shepherd flight test success Blue Origin have successfully tested the launch abort escape system for the company’s New Shepard rocket. The test was the fifth flight for the New Shepard vertical take-off and vertical landing spacecraft which is designed to take passengers and scientific payloads on sub orbital ballistic flights to altitudes of over 100 kilometres or 328 thousand and 84 feet -- the official start of space.
