The Milky Way’s mysterious gamma ray glow solved - SpaceTime with Stuart Gary Series 20 Episode 35 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1662

Stream Episodes on demand from www.bitesz.com or www.spacetimewithstuartgary.com (both mobile friendly) *The Milky Way’s mysterious gamma ray glow solved A mysterious gamma-ray glow coming from the centre of the Milky Way is most likely caused by a sea of pulsars. The findings cast doubt on previous ideas that the glow might be evidence of dark matter -- a mysterious invisible substance that accounts for 85 percent of all matter in the universe -- but which has so far evaded detection. *Gravitationally lensed supernova Astronomers have discovered their first gravitationally lensed thermonuclear supernova. The new observations provide new ways of studying the accelerating expansion of the Universe due to a mysterious force called dark energy – as well as gravity and distribution of a mysterious substance called dark matter across the cosmos. *Cassini finds big empty close to Saturn NASA’s Cassini scientists say the region between Saturn and its rings is relatively dust free. However, the discovery made during Cassini’s first plunge inside the rings has come as somewhat of a surprise. *SpaceX launches its first spy satellite SpaceX has successfully launched its first top secret spy satellite for the National Reconnaissance Office. It was a case of second time lucky for the classified payload after a faulty first stage liquid oxygen temperature sensor detected an anomaly the previous day resulting in the launch being scrubbed. The NROL-76 payload was blasted into orbit aboard a Falcon 9 rocket from pad 39A at the Kennedy Space Centre at the Cape Canaveral Air Force Base in Florida.  Cassini’s first dive inside Saturn’s rings - SpaceTime with Stuart Gary Series 20 Episode 34 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 2240

Stream Episodes on demand from www.bitesz.com or www.spacetimewithstuartgary.com (both mobile friendly) * Cassini’s first dive inside Saturn’s rings NASA’s Cassini spacecraft has survived one of its riskiest manoeuvres -- after successfully undertaking its first ever dive through the narrow gap between the planet Saturn and its rings. As well as provide unrivalled close-ups of the rings – the flight through this previously unexplored region could finally help astronomers answer the nagging question of the true age of Saturn’s spectacular rings. *Hints of possible new physics beyond the Standard Model Researchers may have just discovered the first possible hints of new physics -- which could forge the first significant cracks in the Standard model of particle physics -- that forms the foundations of sciences understanding of the universe. The new findings could be an early indicator of an inconsistency which could take science beyond the Standard Model. *Ripples in the Cosmic web Astronomers have made the first ever measurements of small-scale ripples in the primeval hydrogen gas which makes up the large scale cosmic web like structure of the universe. Researchers used rare double quasars to measure variations in the structure of the cosmic web 11 billion light years away. *May Skywatch We check out the night skies of May on SkyWatch where the highlight of the month will be the annual Eta-Aquarids meteor shower which is generated as the Earth passes through the dust and debris trail left behind by Halley’s Comet.  New evidence for antimatter in space - SpaceTime with Stuart Gary Series 20 Episode 33 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1486

Stream Episodes on demand from www.bitesz.com or www.spacetimewithstuartgary.com (both mobile friendly) * New evidence for antimatter in space Scientists may have detected particles of antimatter helium in low Earth orbit. The early hints were spotted in data on cosmic ray observations undertaken by the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer on the International Space Station. If confirmed the antimatter helium could point to islands of antimatter spread across the universe. *New details on how the late heavy bombardment changed the solar system forever A new study of ancient Martian impact craters has provided strong evidence that the late heavy bombardment occurred between 4.1 and 3.8 billion years ago. The findings show a 400 million year lull in asteroid impacts striking the surface of the red planet. *A jet stream discovered in Earth’s core. Scientists have discovered a jet stream churning deep in Earth’s molten outer core. Unlike the more conventional atmospheric jet streams associated with weather pattern generated high altitude winds – this newly discovered jet stream is located some three thousand kilometres below the Earth’s surface. *China launches its heaviest ever payload into space China has launched its heaviest ever payload into orbit. The new Long March 7 heavy lift rocket blasted off from the Wenchang spaceport on Hainan Island in the South China Sea, carrying the 13 tonne Tianzhou -1 resupply mission to Beijing’s Tiangong-2 orbiting science module. As part of its end game mission managers at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena California have begun sending the probe on riskier more adventurous missions. *Could Fast Radio bursts be powering alien ships The search for extraterrestrial intelligence has looked for many different signs of alien life, from radio broadcasts to laser flashes, without success. However, a new study that the mysterious phenomena known as fast radio bursts could be evidence of advanced alien technology. *Scientists make the case to restore Pluto's planet status A group of scientists are proposing a new definition for a planet. The current definition was formulated after observations indicated larger worlds existed beyond Pluto in the dark reaches of the Kuiper Belt. *Dinosaur asteroid spawned a mountain range taller than the Himalayas’ A new study claims the asteroid impact 66 million years ago -- which led to the extinction of all dinosaurs other than birds – also spawned a giant mountain range taller than the Himalayan Mountains today. New computer simulations of the Chicxulub impact event show the initial rebound of the Earth crust from the impact of the 10 to 15 kilometre wide asteroid would have temporarily produced what scientists call a ring peak – a mountain range inside the crater. Similar structures are seen commonly seen in craters on the Moon as well as on other bodies throughout the solar system. *Launch of Delta IV Rocket Carrying WGS-9 US Air Force Satellite A Delta 4 rocket has successfully blasted off from the Cape Canaveral air force base in Florida carrying a new military satellite into orbit. The first Delta 4 mission for 2017 carried the US Air Force space command’s Wideband Global Satcom WGS-9 telecommunications satellite.  Early Galaxies dominated by ordinary rather than dark matter - SpaceTime with Stuart Gary Series 20 Episode 22 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1660

Stream Episodes on demand from www.bitesz.com or www.spacetimewithstuartgary.com (both mobile friendly) *Early Galaxies dominated by ordinary rather than dark matter A new study has found that early galaxies were dominated by ordinary matter rather than the dark matter which dominates galaxies today. The findings mean dark matter – which makes up around 80 percent of all the matter in the universe today – was far less influential in massive, star-forming galaxies during the peak epoch of galaxy formation, 10 billion years ago. *How ghostly neutrino particles could improve sciences understanding of the universe A new study claims one type of neutrino may comprise exactly equal amounts of two other types of neutrinos. The findings by scientists working with the IceCube Neutrino Observatory at the South Pole could help physicists better understand the universe. *Earth probably began with a solid shell A new study claims Earth probably began as a single solid shell which broke apart later to form the planet’s characteristic individual tectonic plates. The findings could help settle a longstanding debate about the origins of plate tectonic on Earth. *Dragon returns to Earth, concluding tenth resupply mission. The SpaceX CRS-10 Dragon cargo ship has splashed down safely in the North Pacific Ocean off the Californian coast. 320 kilometres south west of Long Beach. The capsule was loaded with over two tonnes of experiments and equipment being returned to Earth from the International Space Station. *New Telecommunications satellite launched Following an earlier delay due to high winds, SpaceX has successfully launched a new telecommunications satellite into orbit. The spectacular night time launch from space launch complex 39A at the Kennedy Space Centre at the Cape Canaveral Air Force base in Florida was the third Falcon 9 launch of the year and the second off the historic former Space Shuttle and Saturn 5 Apollo moon rocket era launch pad.
