Bonus: #BelieveWhichWomen, Keith Ellison, Alex Jones https://www.patreon.com/posts/keith-ellison-20882230 Gabe and I talk about what we learned about the service industry from "Saved by the Bell" and what we learned about Salvadoran death squads from "21 Jump Street." Then we talk to comedian and journalist Travis Irvine who's seeking the Libertarian Party's nomination to run for Governor of Ohio about his campaign; about the pope's decision to condemn the death penalty (which is good) and the fact that he had to change the catechism on this (which is weird. given the whole Jesus story); speaking of which, we also talk about a recent crucifixion in Saudi Arabia; plus slave labor in California.
Brent Welder and James Thompson: What's (hopefully not) the matter with Kansas by Katie Halper
bonus: https://www.patreon.com/posts/20353124 Gable Pacheco and I talk to Thomas Frank at a live taping of the Katie Halper Show. Frank, the author of "What's the Matter with Kansas" and "Listen Liberal," whose writing appears in The Guardian and Harpers has just come out with "Rendezvous with Oblivion," a collection of essays. Thomas talks to us about how Hillary Clinton could have won, what turned him from Republican to Democrat, what turns him off about the Democrats, and what turned him from academic to journalist.
Bonus: Ro Khanna on dual endorsing Ocasio-Cortez and Joe Crowley and Julia Salazar and Matt Stoller on the significance of Ocasio-Cortez's victory https://www.patreon.com/posts/20176305. I talk to Rep. Ro Khanna (CA-D) about how we can block the confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh. As a fellow Yale law grad, Khanna "knows the type" of person Kavanaugh is: "he's a partisan hack, careerist, who sucks up to people in power. it's the worst kind of elitism." We also talk about the disgusting deputy DA who called Maxine Waters a "loud-mother c*** and said, "you would think someone would have shot this bitch by now." Then I talk to Councilman Jumaane Williams who got arrested at Trump Tower protesting Kavanaugh about why he's running for Lieutenant Governor of New York and the racist hypocrisy and cowardice of the #McResistance.
Bonus on Catalan independence & dating a professional Spanish soccer player: https://www.patreon.com/posts/nando-vila-on-on-19868254 Gabe Pacheco and I talk about reformist self-care and what happens when you can't pronounce the Spanish ñ (spoiler alert: you may say anus instead of year). Then I talk to Nando Vila, host of the World Cup podcast We Came to Win and the show Soccer Gods about world cup history and politics, fascism and partisans.
Virgil Texas, Alex Press, Sean McElwee, Jabari Brisport, Emma Vigeland, Jake Flores and even Thomas Frank (for 10 seconds) on Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez win and some fo the worst take aways on it. Hear more from Thomas Frank tonight! http://caveat.nyc/event/the-katie-halper-show-with-gabe-pacheco-special-guest-thomas-frank/ Hear my interview with Ocasio-Cortez (which I did BEFORE she won) here https://soundcloud.com/katie-halper/primary-challenger-ocasio-cortez-vs-old-boy-network! Watch my interview with her here! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jTY8k6hesr8
I talk to Phoenix Calida and William Jackson, co-hosts of The Black Podcast about sex why they don't celebrate pride and how SESTA and FOSTA is killing sex workers, Check out #BlackPodcast https://twitter.com/uppittynegress & https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/the-black-podcast-with-wine-cellar-media/id581644025
Bonus: https://www.patreon.com/posts/19613514 I talk to Christine Ahn Founder & International Coordinator of Women Cross DMZ, an organization of women mobilizing for peace in Korea about the North Korea Summit, what it means, and what the media is getting wrong about it. Then I talk to Emma Vigeland about Trump's immigration policy, how it's similar to and different from Obama's legacy and tender age shelters. And we talk about Israel and the Trump administration's withdrawal from the UN's Human Rights Council.
On this breaking news-ish campaign free bonus ep, I talk to Ben Spielberg about the very important Initiative 77, which requires employers in Washington DC to pay their workers the full minimum wage PLUS TIPS. As of now, tipped workers don't get the minimum wage that non-tipped workers get.
Bonus chat: https://www.patreon.com/posts/19476905 I talk to Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez about why she's running for Congress, how her personal story as a child of Puerto Rican parents influenced her politics, what she's running for and why her opponent, who writes op-eds about his Irish America pride, accuses her of making the election "about race." Plus she talks about the amazing candidates being supported and recruited by Justice Democrats, Brand New Congress, and Democratic Socialists of America. Gabe & and I talk about Anthony Bourdain, his hatred of Henry Kissinger, and his commitment to social justice and human rights not just for "Americans" but for... wait for it... Palestinians. And Gabe and I talk about another tragic suicide: Marco Antonio Muñoz who died in a Texas jail after being separated from his wife and three-year-old son. The family had fled Honduras after the wife's brother had been killed. The apparent suicide (though it's not clear he wasn't killed) sheds light on the new zero tolerance policy around immigration. How much of a departure is Trump from other presidents on immigration, though? Alexandria and I discuss this in the bonus episode.
https://zephyrforny.com/ Legal scholar, activist, and Berniecrat Zephyr Teachout shocked the NY and the country when she came close to defeating Andrew Cuomo in the Democratic primary for governor of New York. Now she's running for Attorney General. And she plans to sue Donald Trump over his conflict of interest as a business man. Zephyr also talks about neoliberalism, why the Dems need to be on offense, not defense, and why "it's time for a new 21st century trust-busting."
Bonus: https://www.patreon.com/posts/aaron-mate-on-19418558 Aaron Maté talks to me about Trump's collusion... with Israel, why there isn't an #IsraelGate, why everything you thought you knew about #Russiagate is wrong, how the Russiagate narrative emboldens Trump, undermines #TheTheResistance and protects the privileges of the political elites. Plus what's the deal with Robert Mueller's suits and Democrats being as hawkish as John Bolton?
I spoke to Kara Eastman the day after she won her primary against Blue Dog Democrat Brad Ashford in Nebraska's congressional second district. Ashford, a former Republican who likes to "govern from the Center" and has an anti-choice record, was endorsed by The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC). What's more surprising, kinda, is that Kara Eastman, who is openly pro-choice wasn't endorsed by a single high profile pro-choice organization. The only pro-choice organization to endorse her was Vote Pro Choice. The silence of groups like NARAL, Planned Parenthood and Emily's List is especially frustrating, given that they vocally opposed Heath Mello, the Democrat who ran for mayor of Omaha, because of his anti-choice record, which was better than Ashford's, and despite his promise to be a pro-choice mayor. Not to mention that mayor's have less influence on abortion than members of congress. But I digress.
Journalist Rania Khalek talks about Syria, being smeared as an Assadist, and the weakening and silencing of the anti-war Left.
To hear the rest of my chat with James, go https://www.patreon.com/posts/18505673 I talk to stand up comedian and amazing impersonator James Adomian about being quarter Armenian, growing up conservative and religious, his self-designed major, finding the Left, coming out, and the birth of Trump vs. Bernie
