We have started this year with a series on prayers in the Bible and it has been great. In that time I have seen God answer prayers and His people pray new ones. This month we are moving the prayer series into the book of Daniel. Most of us have heard of Daniel–he is one of the heroes of the Old Testament: he braves the lion’s den; he stands when others fall; he prays when others shrink in fear. He has amazing dreams. Daniel lived in a culture that was foreign to him, with different faiths, customs and values. They tried to change Daniel; they tried to shape him into what they wanted him to be but Daniel dared to be something else by being a man of prayer and faith. Some say we live in a post-Christian culture. You could have said Daniel lived in a post-God culture, but it was not for Daniel and I believe it will not be for us either. Downloads

We will be concluding our look at prayer in the book of Genesis by learning from Jacob about the prayer of blessing. We will learn how to step out from the shadows of the curse and live in the blessing of God, moving outward into new fruitfulness, new expressions of the Kingdom, and new hope! Downloads

“Is anything too hard for the Lord?" This was God’s question to Abraham. Life is full of challenges. We can face them with fear or we can follow and flourish in the footsteps of Abraham, cultivating a growing, knowing faith. Abraham left a legacy of faith–sons and daughters of faith. Abraham is called “The Friend of God.” That friendship was forged in fires of faith. God visited Abraham on seven separate occasions; each deepened Abraham’s faith in God and friendship with God. Let’s pray someday our children of faith will look back and declare with unshakable confidence, “There is nothing too hard for our God!” Downloads

In Genesis 16, Hagar is cast out into the wilderness. God sees Hagar in her distress and speaks promises of hope to her. Many of us can relate with how Hagar felt in the wilderness. D.J. reminds us that in our own wilderness experiences we serve a good and faithful God. Downloads

OMG If you know the language of “texting” you recognize those three letters are code for “Oh My God!” You do not have to be familiar with the world of texting to hear those three words casually thrown around in response to everything, from discovering someone is expecting a baby, to a surprise home renovation, to a last minute come-from-behind football victory. We hear the phrase so often that many, if not most, have forgotten that these words are critical–even decisive–in the destiny of a people. God made a promise to His People: “if My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.” (2 Chronicles 7:14) To begin this series, we are going to pray as the disciples prayed, “Lord teach us to pray.” Downloads

"Lord, teach us to pray." In the Gospels, this simple phrase marks the only time we see the disciples ask Jesus to teach them something specific. The didn't ask about learning how to preach or perform miracles or make disciples. Why not? Because they saw that in Jesus, the way of prayer is the only way toward all those other Kingdom pursuits. As we follow up from last week's teaching on stillness, we continue to look at two essential things to keep in mind as we think about the New Year. In Psalm 46, these two images are that of a refuge and of a river. Together, they help us understand how to be still know that he is God, and see him exalted among the nations (v. 10). Downloads

Be still and know that I am God; I will be exalted in all the nations. –Psalm 46:10 “Being still” has never been more difficult. From gadgets buzzing, screens blaring, phones ringing, and kids screaming our worlds seem to be spinning faster and faster. Even holidays leave us exhausted. But looking at the start of a new year we need to take stock of the state of our souls. Pursuing God’s vision without following God’s plan is delusional. Executing God’s plan without God’s vision is arrogance resulting in empty effort. God’s vision fused and fueled by God’s plan is a supernatural, Kingdom-catalytic, explosive, world-changing joy ride. Buckle up! Joy to the World; the Lord has come; let earth receive its King! How can I cultivate contentment? Paul says, “I have learned contentment.” (Philippians 4:11) Notice that contentment is not something innate and natural. Our default is to bediscontent. But have you ever met a person who was both discontent and joyful? If we desire joy we must disown discontentment. We will open the Scripture and consider “Contentment 101.”

As we wrap up Philippians, Paul saves some of the best for last in his letter. What does it look like to be truly content? And how can we be generous? And why do those things matter?

What if we looked for the good? There is an old saying, “Anyone can find dirt; it takes effort to find gold.” Sunday, we are going to think about thinking, specifically how to think well. The Scripture lays out a “think list”– it is given to serve as a guardian to our hearts. Proverbs 4:23 tells us “Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.” Let's seek the good. Downloads
